2018-11-29 17:59:40 +0000 UTCArmor design might mean that they don't have the ability to forge large enough plates to shape into large solid ones so they go with a more segmented design. That may be a justification. Of course many late medieval EU armors have a 2 part breast plate, bottom one overlaps the top, to help with bending down.
