Great reaction with such a powerful message at the end it made me ugly sob (and I'm not even in a bad place mentally this last year). Your commentary really made me look at the album in a new way, made me appreciate it more and I already loved it so much before!
Anyway, I found it hilarious how every time you said anything about Ashton's vocals, it was actually Calum and every time Ashton was really singing, you said nothing.

Can you do a collaboration with Blake and Caitlin for 5sos. I think you 3 should react to 5sos ranking all of their songs, and give your own opinion of where songs should be ranked. I think it would be absolutely hectic, insane and so much fun!

💯to them singing more! And Steven was on point to note how much it adds sonically when they switch it up. I think Calum also has a pretty distinctive tone in previously albums, but this one he's whipped out this incredibly mature and controlled sustained falsetto. It's a different sound and style than teenage Calum's high ranges, but it's so good!
When I saw them live last spring I was really surprised how many high harmonies that I thought were Ashton were actually Michael ! He's got that great emo tone, but it's a tool and he also has this crazy pure choirboy church oratorio harmonic he can pull out. I was sat at a wonky angle so I could hear them as well as them amplified (if that makes sense?) and Michael doing the highest harmonies over Luke made their tones stand in contrast. And if you asked me before that who would have the purest clearest high harmonies I wouldn't have said Michael ! Luke surprised me by having a much warmer tone than I expected--they sound so good together.
I totally agree that Ashton and Luke have more similar voices than I would have expect and arder to distinguish - esp if Luke isn't on lead. I'm so greedy for more performances and hope they play some of the newer new songs in AUS and end up on YouTube.

I was looking at the lyrics while watching Steven's reaction and genius doesn't quite! It's definitely missing some very clear harmonies (not just the stacks in the background stuff) and I'm 95% sure it's wrong in a couple in a couple of places (they definitely miss a Michael / Luke moment that was so good.

The versions of EFYTS and TMH Joshua tree version definitely should be listened to! This version of Tmh is a full minute longer than the original single we got and the ending is completely different but they’re both so good!! Please check them out when you can! There’s also a music video for Bad Omens that just dropped yesterday too that was beautifully made 🤗
This album is an absolute masterpiece and there’s also a sense of familiarity to it that I absolutely love. The fact they all have individual vocal parts in the tracks (like Ashton in Bloodhound, Caramel, and Haze) or entire songs (Emotions with all Michael vocals and TEARS! being entirely Ash vocals) makes my heart so happy to know they all get a chance to show off how incredibly talented the four of them are, together as a group and also individually 🥰

I love this album with my whole heart and have been playing it on repeat since it came out! You can really hear some wfttwtaf and superbloom themes throughout. Calum, Luke and Ashton all have similar voices so with the constant switching of vocals I totally understand the confusion but that makes the blending of songs even better! I’m just glad that all 4 of them are singing more

"This is too much." Yup. After my first listen I just kind of sat there in my bed, not sure what to do with myself (it was also right on the heels of the ONO livestream, which in and of itself was a highly emotional experience...if you didn't get a chance to watch it, try to find some of the videos on YouTube, especially Jet Black Heart...it'll hurt you in the best possible way). I picked up on some of the substance stuff--like you, I tend to stay away from stuff due to an addictive personality and family members' battles--but definitely picked up on all the mental health stuff. It's one of the reasons why I love this band, the fact that they're not afraid to talk about mental health and the darker stuff. I also feel like "Bleach" could be talking about so many things...the end of a relationship, self harm, miscarriage/infertility (maybe it's because I'm a woman, but my brain automatically went to blood)...but it's just so fucking beautifully sad.
I also LOVED your comments about "Best Friends" and how you feel like it's also a shout out to their fans. During the ONO VIP Q&A Michael made a comment about how he feels like 5SOS is the band that's most made fun of by their fans (he was smiling about it), and someone (I can't remember who...Ashton maybe?) responded with a very sincere, "And we love it." Those guys know they would be nowhere without each other and the fans, and I can't remember ever seeing a band that's that big and popular who's also so close to their fans. It's special.

Definitely! WFTTWTAF is my most favourite album as well!! He really doesn't get the recognition he deserves & it really is disappointing & makes me sad!! His writing is crazy & has taken 5SOS to another level. Don't get me wrong - they are all so fabulous but Luke is just undeniably super talented & we need to realise how lucky we are & appreciate him some more!! ❤️

I completely agree! I think because he is so insanely talented and is the lead vocalist, when the others sing they get a lot of attention. I’ve seen sooo many reactions the last few days commenting on the others that I truly believe Luke is underappreciated. His solo album is literally my favorite album of all time. Luke is a phenomenal songwriter/singer/and musician and should get some love too!

I love how much emphasis you’ve been putting in the lyrics and storytelling because I definitely don’t think 5SOS get the credit they do for writing. To me this whole album had themes of mental health, substances and also getting older and navigating issues as an adult and not running from your problems or partners.

You're awesome, Steven! Thank you for such an authentic reaction and such passionate and heartfelt sentiments at the end of your reaction that shows how much of an empathetic and caring person you are. I hope that anyone watching who is struggling with depression or substance abuse takes your words to heart and finds the strength to speak to someone to get the help that they deserve. No matter your age, it is never too late to begin the journey of healing. ❤

Hi Steven! I absolutely loved your reaction to 5SOS5 & your interpretation & analysis of all the songs. I personally didn't think they all related to substance abuse but I did think they all revolved around inner struggles - whether they be within a relationship, substance abuse, mental health etc. What I think is so amazing about 5SOS is that their writing is so perfect & with multiple meanings so that everyone can find something to relate to & be able to feel a connection to the song. They really are just that good!! All the guys did an absolutely amazing job writing the album, vocally, instrumentally/sonically, production...The entire album is phenomenal...currently my Top 6 songs are: Carousel, Bad Omens, Easy For You To Say, Moodswings, Caramel & Bleach. Also - you really need to listen to Easy For You To Say...this was the first release of the studio version which was so very beautiful. You definitely mixed up multiple times on who was singing, especially Calum & Ashton 😂...almost everytime you thought it was Ashton it was Calum! But I was a little disappointed in the lack of love shown to Luke - every other member got multiple shout-outs about their music playing (Luke does also play a multitude of instruments!) & vocal shout-outs about how great everyone sounded to all individuals except Luke!! I know everyone has their faves & you said they all sounded great...but to not give Luke some individual credit hurt my heart a little! I think he just proved how amazingly talented & underrated he is - his range is just unbelievable. Vocal supremacy = Luke Hemmings!! I feel that we are so lucky he is in 5SOS & as you have mentioned previously he could have gone in many other directions. I just sometimes think the fandom as a whole takes him for granted. To me he is the heart of 5SOS & they wouldn't exist without him starting those YouTube covers all those years ago. But I'm rambling! I look forward to seeing your One Night Only reaction...it truly was magical! You were also absolutely correct in saying that 5SOS are even better live over their studio versions. It is super rare that happens but they all really are that talented!! 😊❤️

I kinda wish that you would look up the official lyrics and singing credits (at least after the song) so that you can really appreciate their vocals and who is singing them bc unfortunately you were wrong a couple times lol.
But anyway, your lyric analysis is so interesting, I definitely saw an underlying theme of mental health issues and (possible) addiction, living in the spotlight and what it does to you but the extent of it wasn't clear to me. I'm seeing Flatline and Bloodhound in this total new light now, they were just fun bops to me before but now I can see they can also be interpreted differently and fuck...I got chills during Tears! too as everything hit and came together. I think though that the songs can be about romantic relationships and substance abuse issues at the same time, they don't exclude each other. Like Moodswings, it sounds to me when you're in a relationship while having an addiction or depression and how you're hurting your significant other with your self destructive behavior and you lie to them about how you're doing and when you're at these low moments you often push the people you love away who are trying to help you and it's just another part of the self destructive behavior.
Other than that, the sound of the album is so beautiful too and it really feels like the sound of their four past albums coming together and creating this masterpiece. Thank you for listening and appreciating 5sos5 and making me see it differently too!

Cal and Ash really brought the heat with the vocals (harmonizing together is fucking magical?!?!?!?!) and the rhythm section of this album. Its all so good! All 4 have become so good at song writing, vocals, ALL OF IT. SO GOOD. and Michael giving me a new emotional comfort song--HERE FOR IT.

steven i so appreciate how much thought and analysis you give to each song lyrically & everything you said at the end really hit me in the feels 🫶🏻 this album became my absolute favorite 5sos album on my first listen as well, and honestly i think it’s in my top 3 albums of all time. everything about this project is perfection. the lyrical content is so poetic & introspective & explores similar themes to what we heard on wfttwtaf & superbloom, which makes me even more grateful that luke & ash had the opportunity to grow & explore their songwriting through those solo projects because it clearly influenced this project in such a significant way! sonically there are so many influences & directions they take the songs but it all sounds so cohesive and that is something i admire so much about them as a band!! this album makes you want to dance at times and makes you want to cry at times and sometimes you’ll be dancing while crying because the song is a banger while the lyrics are depressing af! the distribution of vocals in this album is also so personal to me because it’s reminiscent of their earlier projects, but on a whole different level in terms of maturity, lyricism, instrumentation, everything. i love this band so much!!!!
