The “man hiding under car” moment was later spoofed in MOUSEHUNT (1997).

Definitely his best performance in a movie called Cape Fear.

Scorsese wanted this film to have the look and feel of a Hitchcock movie. And frankly, I think he nailed it.
I haven't seen this film since the 90s, and it was just as great as I remember it being.

I hadn't seen this in its entirety before this reaction. It's a good neo-noir. Good reaction as always.
Other good Scorsese movies (that I think you haven't seen or reacted to at least) that I recommend:
The Aviator
The Wolf of Wall Street
The King of Comedy
The Last Temptation of Christ
Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More
Silence
Even though he has a reputation for gangster films and violence, Scorsese does like to mix up genres and styles, probably more than he gets credit for.
Other Neo-Noir films I would recommend:
The Grifters (Which incidently, Scorcese co-produced but did not direct. He also has a small voice-over part in it).
Body Heat
House of Games
Angel Heart (kind of fits multiple genres, but I think meets definition of neo-noir. Also has De Niro in it, smaller but pivotal role).

Max represents the dysfunction. The reason we aren't sure that Max isn't dead is because we are pretty sure that the family has not resolved their issues with each other to finally be a true, loving, family

Have Sam and Daniel seen "Kramer vs. Kramer" (1979) yet? That's probably the all time greatest movie about dysfunctional families, but with a happy ending.

This movie was a perfect fit for the music it's time because dysfunctional families were the target of the 1990's. Mainstream music of the early 1990's was "alternative" music that often targeted dysfunctional families, especially shitty parents who produce shitty kids.

"The Aviator" should be next for Martin Scorsese films, DiCaprio should have won the Oscar for that one, it's an absolute epic!!

Really hope Brazil is coming up soon on your Robert De Niro exploration, if you want a wild movie you'll be digesting for a long time.

Second for the Original "Cape Fear" !!

Never occurred to me in the original viewing, but there are noir-ish elements, in that there’s no clear-cut good character. Every character has poor judgement and significant flaws, to the extent of making the whole story darker. I haven’t watched the original for many decades, so there’s little basis for comparison.

DeNiro played a horrible person and the legal injustice was no excuse for what he did but really the most unlikable people were the husband and wife. The lawyer was an idiot and his wife wasn't really taking it seriously even while her house was being readied by Joe Don Baker who really does look like he needs a nap. Seriously the couple was really irritating me. And then shooting randomly outside...what a moron. And then he's on the boat with the gun that at best has 3 rounds left.

I don't know why it's so funny to me that De Niro's laughing like a maniac during the movie Problem Child, but just thinking about that scene gets me every time.

Loved it. Saw in the theater in 91 was blown away...mainly because of the performances. Scorsese's direction is bombastic and over-the-top, but it works well for me. All the acting is superb. The scene with De Niro confronting Lewis on the stage is still unnerving.
Fun fact: Scorsese originally offered Harrison Ford the role of Sam Bowen and agreed but then changed his mind...De Niro even called Ford to convince him but Ford said he would only do it if he played Max Cady lol
Another fun fact: De Niro as Max Cady was nominated for best actor for the Academy Awards but lost it to another great, chilling performance by Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the lambs".
The original "Cape Fear" (1962) which starred Gregory Peck as (Bowen), Robert Mitchum as (Max Cady), and Martin Balsam (Private Investigator Kerseck) were also in the remake in case you didn't know.
Peck played Cady's lawyer in the remake, Mitchum played the Lieutenant who told Bowen "I don't know whether to look at him or read him" and Balsam played the judge.
People like to compare the two versions but I like both of them for different reasons.
I hope you consider reacting to
"Awakenings" with De Niro and Robin Williams and
"This boy's life" with De Niro and Leonardo Dicaprio

This reminds me how great De Niro was in Frankenstein - also about revenge, but with a much more sympathetic character. As for Scorsese, personally my favourite is Shutter Island - it's Cape Fear on acid - followed by The Aviator

I hope you guys eventually watch the original 1962 film as well. Robert Mitchum plays Max Cady in that one he’s just as great as DeNiro.

How fitting to post on this day😂😂 really looking forward to watching this though. One of my fav De Niro performances.
Edit: You did well to notice that this wasn't your typical Scorsese film, especially in terms of visuals. It's more Hitchcockian. You'll notice it when you watch Vertigo, one of Scorsese's favorite films.
There are so many more great De Niro performances to get to, but the one I REALLY want to see is The King of Comedy. It is arguably his best performance in the sense that when I watched it for the first time, I completely forgot that it was De Niro, I didn't see him. I don't think any other performance has done that to me.

Watching this again, there's a lot of similarities in Nick Nolte's character and Woody Harrelson's character from True Detective.

Was it weird for you guys that Sam was the father's name and Danielle was his daughter?
Scorsese's touch to what could've been a straight thriller is that there is no hero. Sam Bowden wronged Cady and his family isn't sweet and kind, all the things you would normally do in a movie like this. The original 1962 movie is much more good and evil. Scorsese doesn't even allow Sam the satisfaction of killing Cady. He won't let us enjoy the violence. Guilt and sin are huge themes in Scorsese movies. I think he believes everyone is guilty of something.
The Simpsons did a famous episode parodying Cape Fear.

The performance from Robert De Niro is absolutely chilling and absolutely blood curdling. This is easily in the top ten best performances Robert has ever done . Mac Cady is character that stays with you long after the film ends.
