2022-11-22 11:34:44 +0000 UTCYeah, Mel Gibson does definitely put his signature on it in that way, but I think the fact that there were people who said the bravery of the main character and his actions actually were toned down because Gibson thought if he were accurate, people wouldn't believe it, makes this one of the most powerful and emotional films to come out of the last 10 years

2022-11-22 04:13:58 +0000 UTCInteresting, I know sometimes it's difficult to look past bad effects if you don't have the benefit of nostalgia, but I think if a movie is good, bad effects or effects that haven't aged well can still work - look at the hover board shots in Back to the Future, the 2 headed monster in Willow, the stop-motion gore in Evil Dead, the shots of Superman flying in the 78 movie, maybe even the shark in Jaws. I think we all look past bad effects if the movie holds up or if we grew up on it..

He had been doing only supporting roles for the few years preceding it (Untouchables, Brazil, The Mission, Angel Heart). Nobody knows why, it's been a mystery! (I think he was kicking drugs and dealing with grief after John Belushi od'd. Both he and Robin Williams were with Belushi the night he died and it affected both of them in major ways. I know Robin cleaned up his act.) It totally re-invented his career, people couldn't believe he was in a comedy. (Even though he had done "The King Of Comedy" earlier in the decade ,but that was more of a satire.) CAN'T WAIT!

I'm steadfastly reluctant to watch many American war films made post-9/11 because at the heart of them there's always some kind of rah-rah sentiment, and knowing Mel Gibson is at the helm of this one makes me extra cautious, but I just peeped the synopsis and it looks promising (but I'm still expecting a generous helping of blood and guts because that's his whole thing).

Ok, I'll start some: I wasn't prepared for what an amazing and inspiring true story I was getting when I finally watched Hacksaw Ridge last year. It may have taken the top war movie spot away from Saving Private Ryan on my list. Midnight Run always flew under my radar. Keep hearing how good it is, so I'll have to check it out. It sounds like a great week for the two of you, though!

(P.S. you both will tear up in the only scene when De Niro reunites with his daughter, TBR & Sam)
