Cauterizing wounds is a bit of movie/tv trope and a myth. It can be used to stop bleeding but as far as infection goes it actually damages the tissue and leaves it more vulnerable to infection.

This guy Garand Thumb in a video on urban survival made a reference regarding scavenging for supplies "If you think you're just gonna go from house to house kicking down doors to collect bottle caps to trade later for RadAway you're gonna die pretty early on." (A reference to the Fallout game series)
