In the book, Chigurh got the money, and returned it to the top people who made the deal (Stephen Root's bosses). And, yes, Anton killed Carla Jean.

It is the same hotel, I believe, because the whole thing takes place in this very small geographical radius.
Honestly, though, that scene takes place at least 24 hours, maybe 48 hours later. Wouldn't actually shock me that a fancy hotel wouldn't just shut down over a murder taking place in the lobby. What do they do, kick all the other guests out? Out of how many rooms?

I know you already know how excited I am, but I really can't wait for Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing, and The Man Who Wasn't There someday. I feel like you guys are going to flip out when you see these movies and think about the fact that nobody talks about them in comparison to the "big" Coen titles. They're all incredible.
(I'm also equally excited for Raising Arizona, The Hudsucker Proxy, Burn After Reading, and A Serious Man, but No Country being one of their thrillers means those are the ones that come to mind first, watching this, moreso than the comedies -- I'm thinking about tone, not quality.)

So sad that Stephan Root still didn't get his stapler back in this one.

I've just realised that you're accidentally watching a series of films about bags of money causing chaos: Fargo, Oscar, and now No Country For Old Men. Let's keep the theme going with Sam Raimi's A Simple Plan!

Definitely watch "Hell or High Water". Even though it's not by the Coen Brothers, it certainly feels like one of theirs.

Wow, I chalk this one up to your best reactions to day. The tension was almost palpable. I didn't even realize how outstanding this movie is despite having it in my collection for years and watching it at least once a year. Thanks for this experience 🙏🏼
I'd love to see your reaction to The Road, another Cormac McCarthy adaptation starring Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

This ×1000! When the reaction is done, I usually have to do some homework, but I listen to the discussion as if it was some kind of podcast. The longer the better and I enjoy every second of it. Sometimes I even wish there was a chance to join the discussion. Great stuff and arguably the best post-reaction footage out there. Thanks for doing that Schmitt's 🤙🏼

This was a great reaction. Hand over her face Sam is the best.
The movie does not want to be traditional genre chase movie with good guys finding and then killing bad guys.
No matter what Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) did or didn't do with his life, Anton Chigurh will still be out there. In the beginning he talks about comparing himself to the old timers, and in the end he is still dreaming about his father. Was the past that different from now? When he talks to his friend in the wheelchair, they talk about some violent murder that happened in 1909.
In the past, in 1980 when this movie takes place, or even now, Chigurh out there. Evil is out there. You can't stop what's coming. But just as Sheriff Bell's father and Sheriff Bell himself try to fight it, the next generation will as well. Young men and young women will have to change and adapt to whatever version of Anton Chigurh comes next. Things will never stay the way it used to be. This is not a country for old men.

Y'all should watch "Hell or High Water" with Jess Bridges as a sheriff in same are of Texas. Not as good as this movie but still pretty good. And on the plus side it has the same actress who played the motel clerk...in a VERY memorable scene...just be prepared to make a choice...GREEN BEANS or CORN ?

I don't really watch the outros for any other reactors, but the outros on this channel are excellent. I love them as much as the reactions themselves. Listening to in-depth, passionate, fun conversations about things I love, by reactors I love, is such a treat. The reaction and outro for No Country were as fantastic as I'd hoped they'd be.
My excitement could not be higher for the upcoming reactions/outros for The Sopranos!

There is a lot of symbolism in Cormac McCarthy novels. I always felt that Chigurh was symbolic of fate. Fate is unstoppable, relentless, and is a product of the decisions you make + luck. That's why he killed Carla Jean in the end, because her husband made his decision. He tells her the coin toss is the best he can do. And it's why he did not kill the sheriff at the hotel, and in fact, almost seems to disappear. Almost like fate is watching over the sheriff but its not his time yet. Its also why he keeps talking about how he and the coin arrived to people the same way. I could be totally be reading into it though. idk. There are a few other movies based on McCarthy novels that are really good. All the Pretty Horses, The Road, and The Counselor (which has the most brutal death scene I've ever seen). They are all excellent movies.

Another great reaction. The ending of this one seems to be the sticking point for some people who don't like it. Each time I see this I notice new things I missed before. This time it was when the lady by the pool asks what else he's looking out his window for and Lewellyn says something about him looking for what's coming and the lady replies with "Yeah.. but no one ever sees that." I know there were more reasons for not showing the Desert Sands shootout, but I liked that dialogue. So many little things.
This movie came out the same year that Bardem was chosen as one of the 100 sexiest movie stars of all time.

You're so right, I think most people really hate ambiguous endings haha, but I love it when a movie kind of challenges us to think for ourselves if we want any kind of resolution, it's a bold move, but that's part of what I think makes this one so great.

Haha so true! Their attention to detail is incredible. Yeah Anton is scary as hell! It doesn't surprise me at all that he would be the perfect example of a psychopath. I can see both sides of people liking and disliking the ending. I think when you have an ambiguous ending, the likelihood of viewers being split goes up

"That'll work." If that ain't just PLUM Texan well I don't know what is lol
Man I love how the Coens include all those regional references, like the accent in Fargo, In-N-Out, Ralph's, and the general wackiness of LA in the Big Lebowski, I would go on but I don't want to say anything about all the other Coen Brothers movies I'm hoping you react to.
May have been said but apparently some psychologists went and watched a bunch of movies looking for examples of psychological profiles and they voted the character Anton Chigurh as the best example of a psychopath in all the films they watched. For me he beats Michael, Jason, all those guys, absolutely terrifying, great movie though.
Also, have to say I actually like the ending (well I didn't want Carla Jean to die but it makes sense, knowing what we know about Chigurh, love Kelly MacDonald btw), I know a lot of people find it unsatisfying, but when Chigurh gets hit by the car, you kind of think, maybe it's like divine or karmic justice, but nope, he walks away, it makes it feel real, finishes brutally real, just the arbitrariness of life (and death) sometimes.

And ANton wasn't in the hotel room. Best way to take it is the sheriff is imagining him in there but Anton had already been in, got the money, and left. And I'm pretty sure back in the trailer park, the reason Anton spared the manager is he heard a noise outside. I'm pretty sure it's the sheriff and his deputy arriving. They really did just miss him.

Another thing with Anton. He lives by a "rule" and is dismissive of Carson Wells because his rule lead him to his death. Anton followed his rule and still ended up in a random car crash proving Anton's rule wasn't any better. Anton thought his rule controlled his life, down to coin flips.
Reed James

The movie tricks you into thinking Lewellyn is the main character, but it's really the Sherriff. ANd I'm pretty sure Carla Jean is dead. If you watch Anton, he hates blood. In the strangulation scene, when the blood spurts, he looks away instantly. Throwing away the socks, setting dwon the plastic to fix his wound, lifting his boots to keep his feet out of Carson Well's blood. You got to watch the film again and really pay attention. And Lewellyn didn't have beer. He was in his hotel room and managed to unleash enough firepower the Mexican's ran. It seems like they just started spraying and praying and the woman was killed in the cross fire.
Anton was hired by the biusness man. He went out with two of the buisnessmen's guys and killed them. That's why the buisnessman hires Carson Wells to stop Anton who seems out of control, just killing everyone, even guys supposed to be on his side. And notice, it's not about Carson Wells that he kills teh buisnessman over, but giving the Mexican's a tracker to find the money. It offended him.

I love this film, but I'm always confused about how Carson Wells is able to check in to the hotel after the hotel owner/operator is dead? Or was he already checked in and just out on the town for the night when Chigurh and Llewelyn have their confrontation? And even if that is the case, why wouldn't someone as perceptive as Wells notice the signs (broken, shot out windows, damaged door) of a shootout and be on his guard? Is this a plot hole or am I missing something?

I love the side characters in this film and Fargo. The Coen Brothers do such a great job of having these side actors do such an amazing job in their films. For example, the man in the clothing store, the man in the camping supply store, the woman at the motel, the woman on the phone with Chigurh when he calls that random person, the border patrol guy, etc.

Dan/Sam,
I don't know if you ever played "Grand Theft Auto 5".
There is a spot in the desert where you find a bunch of dead men with their cars and a briefcase full of money. It's a "No Country For Old Men" Easter egg. Take the case of money and see what happens.
And the briefcase they used for the money is the same model the Coen brothers used in "Fargo".
