Oscar (1991) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

And a third. It just might be DePalma's best film. Plus, just like the Stallone classic, Cliffhangers, we get to see John Lithgow as a baddie! It's also getting a nice 4k release next month. Phantom of the Paradise would be the other DePalma film to check out.

As long as we’re recommending Stallone movies about alternative forms of fighting, it’s probably worth checking out PARADISE ALLEY from 1978. Stallone wrote it, directed it, and sings the title song, for Pete’s sake. It’s a 40s-set crime drama in which Stallone plays one of three hustling brothers trying to break one of them into the wrestling racket. Deep-cut Stallone. Ha.

I’ll throw a second on the BLOW OUT rec, whatever that might be worth.

This is one of two zany ensemble comedies in which Tim Curry absolutely kills it. The other, of course, is CLUE. 😉👍

Also, I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Godfather’s Pizza chain, but when Vendetti told them to order a pizza, they’d be back in an hour, it was in reference to the old GP commercials. Vendetti was dressed like The Godfather character in those ads: https://youtu.be/kokaoNJoq1g

St Valentine’s Day Massacre is what they were referencing at the beginning. Members of Bugs Malone’s bootlegging operation were gunned down in a garage. Al Capone’s gang was suspected to have been behind it but it was never proven. https://themobmuseum.org/exhibits/massacre-wall/

John Landis also directed the Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video, probably one of the most famous music videos ever.

was so excited to see you were watching this, had a great time watching along, and am so glad you liked it! i've loved it since i was a kid and will argue all day that it's underrated - and that a lot of the people who didn't like it simply didn't understand it. it's not going to be everyone's thing and that's fine, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. it's quite well done. so thank you!!!

Kind of a shame that Sam and Daniel first get exposed to a screwball comedy homage instead of the real thing. Oscar didn't deserve to be panned, but obviously stuff like His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, Arsenic and Old Lace, Ball of Fire, My Man Godfrey, My Favorite Wife, The Lady Eve, The Awful Truth are much better films (and I'm sure all the critics in '91 that hated Oscar were pretty well versed in the genre). Siskel and Ebert did like it though. Homages are a tricky thing.

I can see Pacino playing it as a riff on Michael Corleone. He could have used his death glare, but I do think that Stallone doing it makes for something more interesting and unusual. He's pretty good, although I feel like it's the supporting cast (especially Peter Riegert as Aldo, Chazz Palminteri as Connie and Tim Curry as Dr Poole) who really stole the show. There's also a Stallone movie that I personally haven't seen as of now, but that looks really interesting that nobody seems to talk about. It's a 1978 crime drama called F.I.S.T.. Release between Rocky I and II, it was directed by the great Canadian filmmaker Norman Jewison. It's a dramatic role for Stallone and deals with labor unions and their links to organized crime. It wasn't a mega hit, but it was pretty successful and well-reviewed. I have a hunch it might be worth a shot. Anyways, I wish a good day to Daniel and you.

So I gave this movie a second chance and I'm glad I did, I wont lie the first 20mins or so were slow for me lol but once you take it for what it is instead of what you think it should be it's very enjoyable, it did make me laugh 😁👍

Woohoo!!! 🙌🙌🙏🙌🙏🙌

Oh no way!! I can’t imagine Pacino playing the lead 😂 I thought Stallone was the perfect fit. And yes! We didn’t realize until after we stopped filming Landis had done American Werewolf in London -Sam

It was so much fun! Dr. Poole looking over the banister was I think my favorite part along with the twins? Or brothers! 😂 -Sam

Oscar was originally a French play written in 1958. The play as well as the first 1967 film adaptation were set in then contemporary France. Both starred legendary French comic actor Louis De Funes in the role of industrialist Bertrand Barnier. Screenwriters Michael Barrie and Jim Mullholland set their adaptation during the American Depression and added the layer of gangsters and cops stories due to director Landis' desire to reference and hommage classical 1930's screwball comedies and farce. Landis wanted Al Pacino for the lead role but he opted for the larger salary offered to him to play the villain in Dick Tracy. Stallone eventually took the part because he wanted to test his range and go beyond the action icon he had become typecast in. So, this film is a classical farce that references classic 30's cinema starring an action star in a purely comedic performance. Most critics and audiences of the time just didn't want it and unfortunately didn't give it a chance. It was a huge flop, only making 23 million dollars worldwide on a 35 million dollars budget. PS: John Landis directed 'An American Werewolf in London".

My daughter had not seen this movie, but she thought I was crazy when she walked in while I was putting laundry away and I said "here is some money, and here is some more money, and oh look... a lovely new twenty dollar bill." :D

I gotta champion the film Blow Out starring John Travolta , directed by Brian DePalma (Scarface, Carrie). Underrated film and one of Quentin Tarantino's personal favorites

Ken Veader

Nighthawks is the best Stallone film left in his filmography

I absolutely love this movie. I don't know why people don't like it. It is such a fun movie, and so very well done. I think a lot of people just don't get the humor of it, and how it was put together like a stage play. I loved Paul Riegert's role as the butler. I love saying "oh... I'll get it!!" when I hear the phone or doorbell. :D

I'm excited to watch this today. Thank you! ❤️ (naysayers begone lol) As far as Stallone, I'm looking forward to "Lock Up". And "Over the Top" the most after this.

Jonathan Patrick

NO FREAKING WAY! I've long wanted you all to watch and react to this film, and I must've been asleep at the wheel because I had no idea it was happening. This is one of the biggest gems that most people I know have never seen!
