Bloodsport (1988) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Bloodsport (1988) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

Please tell me since you guys loved Bloodsport that we have Kickboxer on the horizon at some point this month?

Demos Samolis

I'm not much of a JCVD fan but I saw the YouTube version of this review and was having so much fun watching the testosterone flow that I had to watch the movie along with full reaction. You guys reaction was better than the movie! I gotta say watching you two react can make a bleah movie so much better.

Anthony Perez

Haha I know, this is exactly what my classmates and family had to put up with from me, everyday 🤣 I do hope they eventually get to Timecop and Sudden Death on the channel. Those 2 were his peak, critically and financially.

Jonathan Patrick

OK, thanks, Jonathan. Can we hear from someone who actually LIKES Van Damme now? Jeez… 😉 PS: TIMECOP and SUDDEN DEATH are both awesome.

Jason Chirevas

After you two have finished several Van Damme movies, you should actually check out the movie titled "JCVD" itself. It's a well done "fake reality" movie where JCVD plays a version of himself and actually shows off some very impressive acting (not a joke, his performance itself is excellent).

Christopher B.

I forgot about this. I wanted to share this here, because it's similar to when his master was hitting him with a stick while he was meditating. My mentor at the Tracker School would always have us practice meditating at night because that's when all the mosquitoes were out in droves. And we have to meditate for an hour and not allow the biting mosquitoes to distract us.

Alex

This was fun to watch. Hope to see you guys maybe watch a Bruce Lee movie one day down the line. In particular “Enter The Dragon” or “The Way of The Dragon”.

Tommy Richards

Wow, Mark, thanks for that comment. I had never seen that fight before. Jesus, it was basically taken straight out of Bloodsport w/ Paco. Super interesting!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Thank you!!!That movie was awesome and yet im surprised how its not talked about more

Demos Samolis

Cyborg!! Agreed!

Yann Laliberté

Did you ever see Silva vs Franklin 1? I was just getting into UFC and Rich Franklin was champion at the time with 7 straight victories…till he faced Anderson Silva. It was probably the best Muay Thai clinch and dismantling I had seen. Full fight is on YouTube.

Mark M

Oh yes Timecop also. I cant believe i forgot that one.

Demos Samolis

No Timecop?

Jonathan Patrick

ok everybody is giving their list of Van Damme movies to watch so im going to do mine. After Bloodsport. Kickboxer has to be next. Its similar to Bloodsport and has people divided on which is better. I would say Cyborg after because its a cool underrated horror action fighting film but i dont think it has the popularity us Van Damme fans give it. So if you skip that then do Lionheart next. Its Van Damme doing street fighting. The movie was amazing and then do Double Impact where Chong Li gets his rematch on Van Damme and then i would say a coupe more. Universal Soldier where Van Damme fights Dolf Lundgren (cuz Dolf is the bad guy) and Hard Target. Hard Target is Van Dammes version of Arnolds True Lies in terms of getting the best out of your action star and giving him a awesome lineup of actors and director!!! Ok im done!!! Sorry guys i just have to put my Van Damme knowledge in!!! Johnny Lawerence would agree!!

Demos Samolis

Another Great JCVD Movies are "Nowhere to Run" from 1993 and "Sudden Death" from 1995

Florian Meier

I'm not much of a JCVD fan but I suppose Bloodsport is good and Sudden Death (which is kind of like Die Hard in a hockey arena).

Scott Kerr

He was a real guy, but not true alot of it, classic martial arts movie although. He was a point fighting style winner, but realistically, hes not anywhere close the movie made him out to be. Not a true story lol. But a classic for JCVD for sure.

Josh crain

I have it on vinyl

Ken Veader

I must recommend the martial arts film Above The Law with Steven Seagal. Innovative fight choreography for its time and actually has a really cool plot

Ken Veader

Definitely not a true story. The author fabricated much of the story to make himself sound more impressive.

Terry Lee

Dan and Sam, see what you did? Now you have to do a martial arts movie poll. 😁 Within the genre, "Bloodsport" is not exactly one of the best, in my opinion. But thank you for reacting to this one! Here are my recommendations: Enter The Dragon" (1973) - Bruce Lee "The Legend of Drunken Master" (1994) - Jackie Chan "Kung Fu Hustle" (2004) - Stephen Chow "Fearless" (2006) - Jet Li "Ip Man" (2008) - Donnie Yen

Mr. Writhms

😄 Yeah she thought it was ok,she didn't enjoy the bone coming out of the leg and zoned out a bit after that, but she enjoyed the fighting scenes and said they were pretty cool,it was largely a positive experience

Duncan

By the way, you can see the influence this had on basically every fighting game. Particularly Mortal Kombat.

James MacDonald

Oh god, I have an extremely sensitive cringe reflex. The only thing that's gonna get me through this reaction is the knowledge that they aren't snobby about movies.

James MacDonald

It's the morning after...Did your relationship survive...?

Future Boy

That was a real treat. Thanks for a great reaction to one of my childhood favourites! I really hope to see lots more Van Damme on your schedule. I really, really want to recommend Hard Target (1993) again as your next Van Damme reaction. After the low-budget, dodgy-acting, non-story you got in Bloodsport (no hate, I LOVE Bloodsport), I want to see what you think of Van Damme in a big-budget movie, with a great cast, a great villain, a solid script, and incredible action. And all brought together by a genuinely legendary director in the action genre.

Future Boy

So the JCVD must-sees: Cyborg, Kickboxer, Double Impact, Nowhere to Run, Timecop (his best in my opinion), and Sudden Death. If you have to choose three? Timecop, Double Impact, and Cyborg (a fantastic B-movie). This was a lot of fun to watch along with you. Looking forward to more JCVD.

Gary Giaimo

This was based on events the real life Frank Dux was involved in, but it was found out years later that he was lying about all of it. Still the movie is a lot of campy fun.

Vwlss Nvwls

JCVD and Bolo Yueng have been good friends since making this movie together. Bolo was also in Enter the Dragon, Bruce Lee's final film.

Vwlss Nvwls

I have loved JCVD since seeing this movie in the theater. Right before seeing this movie I saw him as the villain in a movie called No Retreat, No Surrender. JCVD makes a lot of campy movies like this, but I just love him, and how good he is at what he does. I love all of JCVD's movies, but the top of the list are Timecop, Nowhere to Run, and Universal Soldier.

Vwlss Nvwls

The reaction made it so good! Definitely need to do some more cheesy movies with questionable acting that you can make jokes to!

Jeffrey Miller

I will always defend the soundtrack, and I even pull it off the shelf occasionally for a little background music. Paul Hertzog's score really stands up, particularly in this era where everything old is new again. Stan Bush was a power ballad master in the 80s. If the only track he ever cut was "The Touch", he'd be immortalized forever in the hearts of 80s kids and younger consumers of 80s pop culture. His work for Bloodsport and Kickboxer (not one of my favorite JCVD films) is merely a cherry on top for us sinners. I was about to cite "Restless Heart" from The Running Man as another great Bush track but turns out that was John Parr. Godspeed to both.

Mitchell Smilie

Watching these 80s martial arts movies I grew up watching now kinda just crack me up, how much they influenced the video games I grew up playing. Raiden from Mortal Combat was definitely based off of Big Trouble In Little China, the guys designing the game were watching the movie on their breaks lol, but I think Bloodsport also had a lot of influence on all those Street Fighter style fighting games I loved playing with and against my friends at the 7/11 when we were supposed to be in class 😂 Good times, there'd be like 8 kids huddled around the Street Fighter 2 and the adults were like, "these kids are definitely ditching school, but as long as they keep buying slurpees...".

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

If you guys want to see amazing martial arts choreography and intensity, I recommend The Raid 1 and 2. Indonesian martial arts called "Pencak Silat" and the action is brutal. I PROMISE you will enjoy these films a lot.

EdmanXERO

Yeah, that was my guess too.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Paco looked to be Muay Thai eh?

Aaron Barlow

Yeah one of my favorite lines ever is from that film. "So are you like a special forces guy or something?" "I'm just a cook."

Alex

His old girlfriend just droned on and on...ex-Cetera. ;)

Aaron Barlow

He is/was a legit Aikido master though, and making it as a westerner in Japan at the time as a master opening a dojo was unheard of and incredibly hard, so although there's a lot of shade cast his way and like all humans has made mistakes he was a great action star in his day, Under seige was brilliant.

Aaron Barlow

Well the Under Siege films are great.. I would have to watch the others to see. But in general Seagal is one of those guys that a lot of people talk a lot of crap about online and say all kinds of things.. All kinds of drama. I'm not interested in the drama. The movies are good and really fun to watch. The drama is just not even worth it because no one really knows except for the people involved. A lot of it also has to do with the drama surrounding Aikido and all that. I can't stand when ppl start on the martial arts are a scam bandwagon.

Alex

I'm not sure "great" is the word I'd use, but since we're dipping our toe into the Van Damme pool then I TOTALLY agree that Seagal deserves some coverage too ;) I'd go in order: Above the Law/Nico (gotta start here with Pam Grier!!!), Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, Out for Justice, Under Siege, Under Siege 2.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Oh boy. I hadn't seen this since I was a kid. Some solid choreography here (first mainstream, western martial arts movie to focus on a variety of differing styles?) and Chong Li's physique is an interesting character in of itself; the guy was a beast. Despite JCVD's shortcomings, he does have some beautiful fucking kicks. Jesus. Still, like TBR, Paco was my favourite back in the day :) edit: Funny story about Van Damme from a Hemswoth brother (Expendables 2 spoilers): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amFwg_BOM5I

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

One of my oldest Kung Fu teachers was famous in our high school for doing splits on chairs like Van Damme. My cousin used to be able to kick behind his head like VD did in Blood Sport. I came pretty close. Then of course now if TBR and Sam have ever played Johnny Cage in the original Mortal Combat.. Now you know where the "ball punch" move comes from. lol

Alex

lol "soppy 80s music" Soft rock.. Those reactions are so Johnny. lol "Peter Cetera is NOT badass. Peter Cetera is the opposite of badass."

Alex

Steven Seagall films are also great.. Love the Under Siege series.. Both the original and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. Tommy Lee Jones is in Under Siege 1 and gives a great performance. Fire Down Below, Hard To Kill.. All great films.

Alex

Those were tasty buns...

Yann Laliberté

I had never heard of IP man until I was searching some martial arts stuff in YouTube.. Those are definitely on my list.

Alex

Yeah I was like whoa Sam...

Alex

Bolo Yeung who played Chong Li was in Bruce Lee films

Aaron Barlow

TBR - "When did she eat buns?" Sam - "Whoa...." LMAO

Aaron Barlow

You have to watch IP man, based on the life of Bruce Lee's real life Wing Chun master. It's an amazing film. All 3 IP man films are great.

Aaron Barlow

IP man is a must watch.

Aaron Barlow

Hard target has a majestic mullet. :)

Aaron Barlow

An amazing con job. He duped so many people and made so much money from it.

Aaron Barlow

Fun reaction! i see what you are saying but the 2 army guys and the girl, but you are over thinking it. She's a woman and a reporter doing what women and reporters do especially when they catch some type of feelings. The 2 army guys didn't hate each other. It was more of an age and experience paired with youth. Their inability to capture Dux was the trope and the fact that he is so highly trained. I always assumed even as a kid they all sat ring side because well they are army guys who got there because of the local police and she had already come previously as date of one of the gamblers. They all stayed to make sure he didn't get seriously hurt/killed and because " if you can't beat'em, then join's."

Tomas

This was based on the real Frank Dux's purported experiences, however it was later found that he made it all up lol.

Aaron Barlow

When Dux was on the bus and that soppy 80s music came on I said to myself "Man this is so 80s lol" And then 2 seconds later TBR said "Man this is such an 80s movie" Haha.

Aaron Barlow

The Brick not hit back line is an homage to Bruce Lee

Tomas

I will watch this reaction over and over because I love that you guys loved his movie. FUN FACT!! Mortal Kombat character Johnny Cage was based off of Van Damme. The creators of the game created the character based off him. Cages split and punch in the balls to Gorro is because of Van Damme!! Now as a Van Damme expert i will tell you this. Once you do keep doing Van Damme movies. Kickboxer should be next because its a year after Bloodsport and continues the 80s theme!!

Demos Samolis

Awesome, something to do after work tonight!

Jeffrey Miller

I forgot about the music. That 80's music that, at first, sounds so much like some other more popular song that I can't quite place, and then breaks out the ridiculous lyrics that are basically narrating what is happening on screen.

Thomas Yanez

Sam, As mentioned in a thread the other day, Van Damme was my idol growing up, So I gotta chime in. I could do those splits Van Damme did and all his moves in school, (not anymore lol) everyone called me Van Damme in the hallways lol. When I first saw Bloodsport in the theater my mind was blown. I saw this man jumping in the air doing all these beautiful kicks, more beautiful than anyone I'd ever seen before. I was hooked and wanted to be him. From that moment I saw every one of his movies on opening day, owned his movies and made my family watch them all the time. I came close to meeting him twice, still hasn't happened, and the day it does I'll probably cry like a girl lol Jean Claude ran a successful gym in Belgium. His nickname is the Muscles from Brussels. He left his gym to come to California to pursue his lifelong dream of being a movie star. He was homeless, slept in his car, was a bouncer, taxi driver, delivered pizza etc all while trying to get noticed. He would put his resume on producers windshields everyday. Producers were having lunch at a restaurant in LA, Van Damme stopped them outside and did the spilt or helicopter kick on the public sidewalk (heard different stories), and that got him the role of Bloodsport. Crazy. That made him a star. He's known for showing his butt too in many films lol. So get ready for more buns. 🤣 I do know the real Frank Dux, I met him online and we have been friends for at least a decade. Some have bad things to say about him but he's a very genuine guy in my experience with lots of students who respect him. I tracked down a lady in my hometown for some paperwork on some dogs he bought from her long ago. That was the beginning of me getting to know him. Unfortunately he and Jean Claude (after years of friendship) had a falling out over a script (The Quest), not one of his best films. Both claimed to write the film and Van Damme won the decision in court. Credit to Frank Dux on the choreography on Bloodsport as well as other great Van Damme films such as LIONHEART. (I LOVE LIONHEART). I was such a tremendous fan that in middle school I listened to Lionheart, Bloodsport, Kickboxer on audio cassette on the way to and from school on my walk man. Lol. Others were listening to music, I was listening to Van Damme movies. On the film Bloodsport, great reaction. Van Damme has charisma. Not the best acting in some of his older 80s films but he actually can act. Lionheart he's definitely improved, Nowhere to Run, Timecop, Hard Target, Sudden Death and JCVD. Van Dammes smoothness and flexibility, his balance is from starting traditional shotokon as a child , and actually doing ballet. He was a world champion at 18. He's known for his great faces and many more of those great faces in Kickboxer and Lionheart especially, and Chong Li, (Bolo Yeung) does play a bad guy in other films, as well as Van Dammes movie, Double Impact which has 2 Van Dammes lol (twins). Kickboxer is the great cheese filled but badassery fighting follow up to this that yall should react to next beforegetting to his better higher budget films. Thanks for bringing this to the channel. Timecop was his highest grossing most critically acclaimed film of his prime. Then Sudden Death.

Jonathan Patrick

Awesome reaction, you guys!! This was Van Damme's first starring role, so his acting does improve a bit after this. Here's a few from Van Damme that you should consider reacting to.. "Lionheart" (1990), my personal fav JCVD film. "Kickboxer" (1989) "Nowhere to Run" (1993)

Joe Lazarus

There's actually a Bloodsport II: The Next Kumite but it doesn't look like Jean Claude Van Damme is in it (Frank Dux isn't in it). I think you guys definitely should watch the Kung Fu movies and various martial arts films.. Of course there's Time Cop with Van Damme.. But here are some martial arts recommendations that have a lot of very well choreographed fight scenes.. That type of scene with the flying spinning kick that hits the guy over and over in slow motion is a favorite thing in the martial arts stuff of the 90s. Many fights end with a spinning hook kick that is echoed 3 or 4 times before you see the bad guy fall to the floor. The Bruce Lee films Jet Li movies Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon House of Flying Daggers The Myth with Jackie Chan Jackie Chan movies Drunken Master, etc. (these blend martial arts with comedy) Walker, Texas Ranger with Chuck Norris Chuck Norris movies There's actually a style of Kung Fu called drunken style where it imitates fighting while drunk. Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story is a good movie based on Bruce Lee's life although there's a lot of embellishing and stuff that never happened, but still a great film. And of course-- love Sam's face when Jackson is like "Hey you wanna date a really big guy" LOLOL

Alex

Fun fact, several times over the past 5 years I have asked my fiancée if she wanted to watch Bloodsport, absolutely zero interest every time😪 I just text here saying Daniel&Sam have just dropped the full reaction of it,suddenly she is all in and told me to put a bottle of white wine in the fridge for tonight's viewing 😑

Duncan

Finally!!!! Oh... and no it's not real. Dux is full of shit

Yann Laliberté

Haha have fun! -Sam
