Fargo (1996) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Fargo (1996) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

if you like this you should watch A Simple Plan. fantastic movie

James

Since this was a quite a while ago, you probably already know that the Coen Brothers saying this was a true story was definitely not true. I think they said that just to screw with the viewers' minds.

David Martin

i think you would like the tv series too the first one with billy bob was great!!

MIke

Heck yes

Odd Thomas

William H. Macy is also excellent in Magnolia. Amazing cast, directed by P.T. Anderson (There Will Be Blood). One of THE best 90s films. Highly recommended

Odd Thomas

I still have my CD of the soundtrack. Such a great collection of songs.

Donna Castellano

The wife that is set up to be kidnapped is actually in DDG!

Chelsea

Omg I was obsessed with that movie growing up haha I need to ask Daniel if he's ever seen it, because it is the best! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

HAHAHA! -SAM

TBR Schmitt

Please add Drop Dead Gorgeous to your list! It is a comedy set in Minnesota and has a stacked cast! The accents are amazingly done!

Chelsea

I think a lot of people were making suggestions in the comments for Das Boot for other foreign films. I know many have recommended Kurosawa films - Seven Samurai is probably his most popular film. He is considered one of the best directors of all time. Some of my other recommendations - M, Wages of Fear, Come and See, City of God, Battle of Algiers, Amores Perros, Z, Son of Saul, Roma, Memories of Murder. These are all kind of heavy, maybe others can recommend lighter fare:)

Birdie Num Num

A month of Samhain (Summer's End) based movies would be great in October.

Guston Zimasheen

1:38:33: Your reactions and relationship is also the sweetest thing we've ever seen too. The way you sit so close together all cutesy with arms intertwined is so wholesome. It's not like there's any other reason you have to. (No please don't break the behind the scenes movie magic!!! jk)

Guston Zimasheen

Yes! We totally missed that connection haha -sam

TBR Schmitt

Sure! Recommendations? -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I haven't read all comments so this may have been said. Mike lies to Marges face and she believes it. When she finds out he is full of it she realizes she needs to re-interview Jerry. That's the point of that scene.

Shaun2342!

any foreign films lined up? maybe a poll?

Birdie Num Num

Mystery Train is wonderful. Another great filmmaker whose work deserves to be more popular, Jim Jarmusch. I think the most successful poll candidate would be his film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, but I'm partial to Mystery Train and Down By Law.

Tyler Foster

I love Blood Simple so much and would love it if it was next, or at least, after No Country. Both it and No Country could be called neo-noir, so they make a good pair. There's also a really fascinating Chinese remake of Blood Simple, called A Woman, A Gun, and a Noodle Shop.

Tyler Foster

I made the comment while I was still watching the video and I thought you two might recognize his voice later when Buscemi returns to the cabin and the TV is mostly working, but nope! He appears a couple more times during the Coen filmography, but I won't spoil where! Also, glad to hear about tackling the catalog. I also watched Death Proof yesterday, and as you yourself pointed out, another great one you might never have seen just going off the polls.

Tyler Foster

Yes, A Simple Plan is a Bill Paxton tour de force

Jason Dolan

Wow thanks so much!! Yes, this one seems like a very popular request, going to see what I can do to get this on the schedule soon :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thanks so much! No Country for Old Men coming soon! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

More Coen Brothers coming soon! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Absolutely! We have so many shows we want to get to right now, but we'd love to see more, even though we won't get our favorite duo back together :( -Sam

TBR Schmitt

No way!! After spending weeks with Bruce Campbell, we didn't even notice it was him haha I think going through the Coen films is a great idea! Going to see what we can do :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ooh would love more Frances and I mean, Sam Rockwell too?! Sounds like a winner! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

These comments are killing me! I have to read them in Margie's voice! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Seems to be the consensus! It's nice that it sounds like these are all stand alone seasons though! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Haha I like it! Too bad he leaves for work so early :( -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Can't believe it either haha he just had one of those familiar faces, but didn't put it together! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Not reacting, but I did just start this last week! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

SO GOOD! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Okay! I should have totally said something in the outro because we always keep the cast names up, and I was thoroughly confused what that was haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! I can see why! Haha so true! I don't live in the snow, but when I've visited, it's not a walk in the park -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Wooo! Working on it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Awesome! We're definitely going to try to get it on the schedule :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Can't believe we didn't put that together! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

He might! Or he might just be in his hotel room editing haha I'm sure him and his boss will go out and eat some great food :) -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I agree..SIMPLE PLAN is a sleeper classic and well worth the watch

ron clint

This reaction goes right into your top 5, and that's saying something! A Simple Plan (1998) got a few mentions during the Sam Rami talk. It's a great one to watch if you want more like Fargo. It doesn't have Fargo's humour, but it has the bleak winter setting, a great cast, a bag of money causing nightmares, and a story that gets darker with every passing minute.

Future Boy

Another Great Frances McDormand Movies are "Missisippi Burning" from 1988 With Gene Hackman ans Willem Dafoe and "Primal Fear" from 1996 with Richard Gere and Edward Norton

Florian Meier

This is one of My Favorite Movies of All Time and a Great Reaction of you guys !!! Love it, Really a Masterpiece !!! Hope you see also "No Country for Old Men" and "Hudsucker" from the Coen Brothers, they are on your List !!! Another Great Movies with Steve Buscemi are "Desperado" from 1995 with Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek and "Mystery Train" from 1989

Florian Meier

So glad you watched this brilliant film! More Coen brothers please! Perhaps start with their first “Blood Simple”—I think you would enjoy that tribute to Hitchcock and noir thrillers. And it has Frances too.

Michael Soukup

Sam or TBR - would you guys ever consider dipping back into the True Detective well for a Season 2 or Season 3 ? I know everyone will always say that nothing beats Season 1 ... but if you really like the detective genre, why not give those seasons a chance, they are Great! .. Just not Perfect like Season 1.

Burt_Fuggin_Reynolds

Fun fact: When Steve Buscemi is banging on the TV in the cabin, you briefly see a man and a woman talking on the fuzzy image. The man is the Coen Brothers' old friend Bruce Campbell, of Evil Dead fame, in a clip from a soap opera he was on once. Joel and Ethan actually got their start working on Evil Dead, and they collaborated on Sam Raimi's (compromised and ultimately pretty bad) second feature, Crimewave, which they all wrote and Sam directed. Directing responsibility was flipped on their much-improved later collaboration, The Hudsucker Proxy, which they all wrote and Joel and Ethan directed. Bruce also appeared -- although you cannot see his face -- in the "trailer" that Joel and Ethan shot for their debut feature Blood Simple in order to prove they had the skills to shoot a movie and to raise interest for financing. Speaking of this, there are some "big" Coen movies, like No Country, O Brother, and Raising Arizona, but I would LOVE it if you take the same tactic as Tarantino after No Country and just proceed through their catalog chronologically. Almost every Coen movie is outstanding in the same ways that this one is outstanding, and there are so many of them that don't get reacted to because not enough people have seen them to win the polls. You both loved Jackie Brown, and that's a movie that I have seen on the polls on multiple other channels, and as far as I can remember, you're the first people to do it, because you went chronologically, and while there are more Coen movies than Tarantino, it'd be great to see some of the lesser-known but still GREAT titles. If you start at the very beginning, you'll see Frances again in another twisty crime thriller just like this one (they met on the movie and she's been married to Joel since). Also, you'll get to Hudsucker Proxy (another one that has come up on so many channels and I have yet to see get a reaction), which will be twice as fun given you know Raimi and Campbell.

Tyler Foster

This is one of my favorite movies and the film that made Frances McDormand my favorite actress when I watched it in theaters at age 14. I love that you guys loved it. You really need to watch Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) with Frances. Her character there couldn't be more different to Marge, but that's a testament to what an amazing actress she is. And Sam Rockwell too.

Domino

Will he get to do any sightseeing?

Scott Kerr

Yer darn tootin'!

Scott Kerr

Whenever I am asked if this movie should have won Best Picture, my immediate response is "Yah! It's pretty darn good."

Jeff Mills

Absolutely loved it!! Thought the comedy around Marge was great. Loved how she could be so inviting and caring but be able to be so on point and professional as well.

Forrest

The first two seasons of Fargo are fantastic! However, personally, I thought season 3 was so-so and season 4 was bad.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

You realize you have to make breakfast for Sam every day now. :P

Vwlss Nvwls

Oh yeah, watch Fargo season one and the money is important.

softshoes

I know he's older now but I can't believe you didn't recognize the nihilist from Lebowski. He wanted pancakes too, but not lingonberry. Maybe if he fixed the cable. One of the greatest Coen Bro. movies and there have been many. You have so much to look forward to in the Coen library, you betcha.

softshoes

So Sam likes podcasts and crime movies? I assume you will be watching and reacting to Hulu's Only Murders in the Building, a fictional comedic crime podcast with Steve Martin and Martin Short.

Opie Wan

This movie is hauntingly good.

Vwlss Nvwls

My favorite weird fact about FARGO is that the guy who was shot in the snow field on the cover of the poster's name in the credits its the symbol for PRINCE.

Jason Dolan

I knew you guys would love it! It's easily in my top 5 all time films. One thing I really appreciate is how well this film captures what life is like during winter in the Midwest. Everyone is actually wearing appropriate clothes like big ugly coats and gloves. The never ending overcast skies, the dirty snow that is everywhere; I can feel the cold just watching it.

Jeffrey Miller

Everyone already said it but, yeah, Fargo Season one and two. I’m on board too.

PIG

Yeah I highly recommend you watch the show. Season 2 is one of the best seasons of television I've seen.

Corncobtv

The guy who "woodchipped" Steve Buscemi was Karl Hungus in Big Lebowski.

Anthony Perez

This! We didn’t realize that at all, but now with these comments, that makes complete sense! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Good to know! We were going to see if you guys were interested in us doing the series so we’ll need to find some time to stick it on the schedule! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! We put it in our schedule for the coming weeks since the poll was so close. Thank you for the other movie recommendations as well! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! Couldn’t agree more! We were going to ask you all if you were interested in us watching the show, so good to know! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Aww thanks, Ellie! Literally that makes so much more sense. Daniel and I were just talking about your comment, we didn’t catch that at all! Marge is absolutely one of the best! Up there with Ellen Ripley! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

LOL we were SO thrown off afterwards when I was trying to google marge! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Awesome!! Can’t wait to hear what you both think of it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I have a feeling this will be a good one! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We’re trying! We want to be ahead SO bad! Haha no vacations for a little while! Daniel does have to go to London for work in a few weeks so we’re just trying to film ever second we can 😊 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

“This is a True Story.” Some people had a problem with the movie lying about this. In truth, it’s brilliant. Mike Yanagita , the japanese dude that lied to Marge, is at the root of this. Marge believed him because she’s an honest person and… why would he lie? Discovering Mike was lying gave Marge the second thought to think that Lundegaard might have been lying. Fargo is about lies and being able to see through them. The movie LIES to the audience but hints with its message: don’t just take my word for it. Just as Marge learned this lesson, we the audience are also supposed to learn the lesson.

PIG

The Mike Yanagita scene is Marge's ah-ha moment... she thinks he's being sincere, and then finds out he's full of shit. She then drives around a bit, and decides to go back to interview Jerry again... because maybe he's full of shit too.

Steve Mercier

I can recommend at least the first two seasons of Fargo. The first season with Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton is about as good as the Fargo movie.

Mike LL

They use that fictional "This is a true story" statement for this fictional movie and the TV show. I think it is true that the screenwriters created all the stories, lol.

Mike LL

I recommend No Country for Old Men (which is obviously another Coen movie) because of how accurate it feels based on the location, just like Fargo. I would also recommend a movie called Winter's Bone (2010). It stars Jennifer Lawrence and it takes place in the rural Ozarks of Missouri. It's not a Coen Brothers movie, but it's very accurate based on the location and mannerisms of the characters. I also recommend a movie called Leave No Trace (2018) which takes place in Oregon. The reason I am recommending these is because of how accurate they are to the people and locations.

Scott Kerr

Marge is one of my fave movie characters. she is such a badass. her and norm are an adorable couple. You should check out the TV show. the first two seasons are great.

Carlos Hurtado

Dan and Sam you are too awesome with these early releases! Mike Yanagita is about her realizing that if he told her all these lies, maybe Jerry did too, which is why she goes back to the dealership. Sam, you're such a super lady! No matter what, Marge is one of the great female movie characters of all time. You betcha.

Ellie Miller

Same, started watching it a good few years back, but switched it off after 20 minutes, but will give it another go here sometime this week,as it does seem to be very highly regarded and wins plenty of patreon polls

Duncan

Spoiler-Not a true story

Charlie Keeler

Looking forward to this. Haven't ever watched this movie and know it is loved by so many so I've always wanted to watch it but never got around to it. Should be a great watchalong!!

Forrest

Looking forward to your YT edit 😎

Jens Pfennig

Damn. Y'all are cranking them out this week. Going on vacation soon?
