Field of Dreams (1989) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Field of Dreams (1989) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

The might need to watch more Burt Lancaster films first.

Hexon66

“Is that the guy from Rear Window?” hurt me a little lol You guys need to watch some more Jimmy Stewart movies, he’s a legend and one of my favorite actors of the classic Hollywood era.

Jim Johnson

Those are all good movies. I will also add - Football - North Dallas Forty (1979) Baseball - 42 (2013) Hockey - Miracle (2004) Soccer - Victory (1981) (stars Stallone as well)

JayF

ha ha, not really recommendations, don't really expect you to watch any of these films or them to be voted on in a poll, just a recognition of one of my favorite actor's long career, if any one didn't know who he was.

Mike LL

Oh, also a baseball related film, it's newer and kind of cheesy, but I love Trouble With The Curve. Stars Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Matthew Lillard and Robert Patrick. I don't want to reveal too much of the plot cause I know you guys don't like a lot of details.

Donna Castellano

I don't know if anyone suggested it, but Eight Men Out (1988) should be on your list after this one. It's about the 1919 World Series and the events behind it being thrown. Obviously, fictionalized to an extent for entertainment purposes, but still good. DB Sweeney plays Shoeless Joe Jackson. John Cusack, Charlie Sheen, David Strathairn, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Rooker also star.

Donna Castellano

Thank you for the recommendations, Michael! -Sam

Chariots of Fire (Olympics) Rudy (Football) Hoosiers (Basketball) Slapshot (Hockey) Baseball - The Natural Bull Durham Bad News Bears MoneyBall (written by Sorkin who also wrote A Few Good Men)

Michael Rhine

@Future Boy Thanks for looking into it! If you like baseball movies, you will certainly enjoy it. I don’t think it was widely distributed. This could be the reason it’s relatively unknown these days.

Mr. Writhms

Yes I didn't phrase that right as I have no problem with golf but was trying to soothe anyone that did.

Andrew Roach

The synopsis (and cast) got my attention, so I've added it to my watchlist. I wonder if it's so unknown because of its title? I just found out about it 5 minutes ago and I've already forgotten the title 3 times!

Future Boy

Great reaction and I love this movie now (it took me a few watches to learn to love it) and it is significant to me for being the last big screen performance for one of my favorite actors, Burt Lancaster, who played Doc "Moonlight" Graham, as the old man, of course. He had a long screen career, going back to his first move The Killers (1946) a neo-noir classic, and it is rare for an actor to be the star of his first film. Important films he starred in were From Here to Eternity (1953), Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and he won his Best Actor Oscar for Elmer Gantry (1960) and appeared in Judgement at Nuremburg (1961) and starred as Wyatt Earp in Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957). He was as big a star in his day as Keven Costner was in his. He had charisma in spades.

Mike LL

"White Men Can't Jump (1992)" is a lot of fun, Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson gel so well off each other in that movie and it is definitely one of Wesley Snipes best character performances

Andrew

I've never heard anything about the book before, but that makes perfect sense. If it was J. D. Salinger in the Shoeless Joe book, it would have referred to his Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Catcher in the Rye (the catcher in the cornfield?) and Salinger was a famous recluse in his later life.

Mike LL

Some classic and new sports movies I'd love you to check out: The Color of Money: Young Tom Cruise and Paul Newman who won an Oscar for his performance Any Given Sunday: The movie is kinda mediocre but Al Pacino carries it and delivers one of the greatest motivational speeches you'll hear. White Men Can't Jump: Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson as street basketball players. Blue Chips: Shaq's film debut. Focuses a lot on on the recruitment going on in college. Jerry Maguire: More of a rom-com than anything and also mostly about the agency work in sports, but peak Tom Cruise, should've won best actor for it. King Richard: I know, I know. It's still a very good movie and a great performance from Will. The Way Back: Very good movie about Ben Affleck as an alcoholic who becomes the coach of a High School basketball team that's struggling.

Shehab Dawoud

Baseball, a sport that I can't stand and never really understood + Kevin Costner, one of the blandest actors ever = recipe for disaster for me. I could just never get into this movie. It's just a little bit too absurd for me. I understood the father-son aspect, that's cute and all, but it's also a little bit cringe.

Shehab Dawoud

wow... alot of nice recommendations, however if you do start a baseball poll, please consider the following Bull Durham 42 The Rookie (2002)

Burt_Fuggin_Reynolds

My favorite baseball movie doesn’t get any mainstream play, so it won’t get many votes in a poll. But it’s awesome with an 89% critic rating. So I just thought I’d give it some attention here. Maybe you can check it out on your own.  “Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings” (1976) It’s comedy/drama about a team in the “Negro” baseball leagues in the late 1930s. It stars James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams, and Richard Pryor

Mr. Writhms

I couldn't connect with this film. I thought it was too cute and saccharine and I found Ray to be very dull and uninteresting. James Earl Jones was good, but he always is. I understand the appeal and I'll admit that I'm a very casual baseball fan who is not particularly close to my dad, but I really didn't empathize with any character. There's other reasons I didn't like this movie but I'm not trying to be a downer, just offering a different view. I haven't seen a lot of baseball movies, but these are ones I think are good. 1. Moneyball- Excellent film with a protagonist who actually has a real character arc. 2. A League of Their Own- Tom Hanks is great and it has interesting supporting characters. 3. Major League- A screwball comedy about baseball more or less 4. The Sandlot- I mean it's the Sandlot

Jeffrey Miller

I love this Movie !!! Between 1987 and 1995 Kevin Costner was one of the Biggest Stars in Hollywood !!! You have to Watch "No Way Out" from 1987 and "Dancing With Wolves " from 1990 !!! Both are on your List !!! Not on Your List is "Bull Durham" from 1988, "Robin Hood" from 1991 and " A Perfect World" from 1993 !!! All These Movies are Classics !! Especially A Perfect World with Clint Eastwood

Florian Meier

"despite being about golf"...there are so many good golf movies!

Erich Bomke

Another great Kevin Costner sports movie is Tin Cup about golf... and yes despite being about golf it is epic. Another great one is Hoosiers staring Gene Hackman the actor so great he always becomes his role.

Andrew Roach

What a fun idea! I had no clue!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

A League of Their Own

softshoes

Got to do Bull Durham. Baseball and a love story.

softshoes

Sure, ultimately my disagreement with them is that most boxing films aren’t really about boxing as a sport. That there are more films with baseball as the main focus or the driving force behind the film then other “sport movies”, but agree as pure films hard to top Rocky or Raging Bull both are definitely in my top 20 (at least) favorite films of all time

Charlie Keeler

Huge baseball fan that strangely enough became a fan by watching baseball movies, then inevitably actually watching baseball. This movie is a classic and glad you all enjoyed! My favorite has to be “A League of Their Own” though. If you all haven’t seen it I highly recommend :)

WhitneyG

So basically in this movie it is obvious why I say TBR is psychic.. I mean he calls it out in the beginning of the movie. I'm not gonna say it but yeah.. lol.

Alex

I always thought the tone in Joe Jackson's voice was because he needed to see his father, and if he went instead of Terrance Mann he would miss seeing his dad.

Alex

Don't leave out The Hurricane and Million Dollar Baby which were also great boxing films. I have to go with Boxing...there's not a baseball movie that can top Rocky or Raging Bull which both are considered amongst the greatest sports films, ever.

Joe Lazarus

Wow I had no idea this existed. This is surreal!

Alex

5) The Natural (Robert Redford)

Alex

Absolutely loved that, always got time for movies with that much heart and warmth Next time Daniel sees his dad,he is totally giving him a big hug and telling him he just watched Field of Dreams

Duncan

Interesting. I never thought about this. Great insight.

Jeff Mills

Wonderful reaction. Other great sports films .. 1) Rudy (1993 Sean Astin) true story. 2) He Got Game (Denzel Washington) 3) For Love of the Game (Kevin Costner) 4) Moneyball (Brad Pitt - true story)

Jonathan Patrick

One of my favorite baseball movies. It's my favorite sport and this movie is one of the best. I remember when it came out that the story sounded ludicrous. Dead baseball players coming out of a cornfield to play baseball? Who's going to watch that? Yet it somehow made sense and it's a great story. I would love to read the book, "Shoeless Joe", sometime. In the book it's J..D. Salinger instead of Terrence Mann.

Jeff Mills

Last year's game was SO much fun. Major League Baseball really needed that.

Jeff Mills

I disagree with y'all in that I think Terrence Mann absolutely did die when he crossed over into the cornfield. You can hear the implication of that trip in the tone of Joe Jackson's voice when he says, "I really think you should stay here, Ray."

The One True Chris

When/if you re-watch it, you'll see that the catcher wasn't his dad in the previous scene with Archie at bat. It was only John Kinsella in the end scenes.

Jen Barnes

Seconded! I love those 2 movies.

Jen Barnes

After the movie was finished filming, the family that owns the land kept the field, and occasionally the MLB holds exhibition games on the field, which is located just north of Dyersville, Iowa, the next of which is scheduled for August 11, 2022 https://www.fieldofdreamsmoviesite.com/

Sarah

Ray Liotta did tend to get typecast in tough guy roles, but you should definitely check out some of his more average guy roles. Two of my favorites are Corinna, Corinna and the underrated Dominick and Eugene. He can actually act even when he isn't playing a gangster :)

Renee S

It's definitely a movie that makes you feel really good. It's almost like baseball becomes more than a sport and more like a "feeling" or a "dream." The sunset in the background, the cornfield, the crack of bat, and the smack of the glove all make it feel like something special.

Scott Kerr

For Love of the Game, the Natural

Jonathan Patrick

Had a discussion with a friend. Which sport makes the best films. I said baseball. He said boxing (Raging Bull, Rocky, Ali, Cinderella Man)those are great for sure but baseball has the better quality for quantity. This one here, eight men out, Bull Durham, The Rookie, The Sandlot, Major League, Money Ball) just a few examples

Charlie Keeler

"PG, alright, looking forward to that" my 1st thought was "They must have taped this right after S7ven"

Joseph Tamburo

Sweet! Just in time for baseball to start!
