Midnight Mass Episode 5 'Book V: Gospel' Full TV Reaction!!

Around 1hr 5mins when you two are discussing it, and were talking about why Riley traumatized her so badly instead of just showing her a burn or something -- I think we can reference some of his final words to her, when he says that he's not as strong as she is. Along with everything else we know of him, I think he's telling us that this is too much to bear. He can't reconcile that he took that girl's life for literally no good reason, he doesn't buy what the pastor tried to convince him of in terms of "the purpose", and he doesn't believe that he can "fix" any of these horrific, incomprehensible developments. In fact, he's probably crushed by the understanding that he'll be "forced" to kill again, except this time it will be for *consciously* selfish reasons, which probably feels even WORSE to Riley. He felt like Erin would be strong enough to bear his final moments, and that he could be with somebody "safe"... while he gives up. In his death, he saw the girl he killed. Those moments of final, hallucinatory peace are the strongest evidence the audience gets to "prove" how deeply his crime burdened him. He saw *her* in his moment of passing.

i just finished watching 😭

Okay, first of all: Hamish Linklater? What a great name! Secondly, he is fucking KILLING IT in this show as Father Paul! My guess is that his career is going to EXPLODE after this. Glad I went back and got caught up! Interested to finish the series :)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Yeah, honestly while Rileys choices are questionable in general, I feel they are entirely consistent with how his character is portrayed.

Good observation! I find this show has so much thought behind every characters action. Very little is up to chance or lazy writing, that's for sure.

Robin Cederholm

Riley saying "I did my best..." before the sun goes up has me in tears. Yet I'm laughing out loud when Sam's saying "You just hold out and burn your frickin arm!". Would have been way less traumatic for her for sure, but while it's selfish it's not a stretch to understand that he does not want to live as a vampire and he doesn't want to be alone when he dies. Rewatching this show has soo much added value. There's tons of little things I missed the first time. I'm so impressed with all the different aspects of life, faith, morality, death, religious behaviors that this show manages to touch and profoundly deal with. Flannigan's an absolute genius! Remember that whatever happens on Sunday, is good!

Robin Cederholm

Interesting. That hadn't occurred to me before, but I agree with you. Riley's "yes" was the moment he chose to end his life.

During the time of Easter and the Passion Catholic priests wear a red robe.

My resolve literally lasted 3 hrs. 🤣

Riley's "I did my best,,," absolutely destroyed me. And when the Monsignor asks Riley "are you at peace?" and he responds "yes" is when Riley had decided to do what he was going to do on the rowboat, It corresponds to what Erin told the Sherriff about how people who die that way typically seem 'fine'. He finally found peace by taking control of his own fate as both penance, and showing and ultimately protecting Erin. He got to choose rather than being forced to go to church, attend AA, etc. At least that was my interpretation.

Sigh...dammit. Can't wait.

This was the reaction I was waiting for - incredible ending - jawdropping and the last two episodes are a roller coaster. This show is an A for me. Maybe even an A+!

More! More! Mooorrrrrrrre! Also : fuck Bev.

I agree - I hated so much what Riley did the first time around. He was a perfect "infiltrator"! How could he? But then I thought, he was not in a good mental state in the first place. He already thought he'd cheated death, and to no purpose. NOW, he could serve one. And he was afraid - one look at how he was looking at the stars at the end would tell you that. He didn't want to have cheated death the first time, and, given the choice, he wasn't going to again. So sad. (Obligatory: Fuck Bev.)

Jessi

My thoughts on this episode: Riley self immolated mainly because he didn't want to kill/feed off his family or friends and he knew it was inevitable. The second reason was to offer proof of his story to Erin on the slight chance she would flee to the mainland. Bev is a fucking psycho and all I can say is that her character consistently tracks all the way to the end. I've read that Mike Flanagan wanted to create a horror story that could be totally explained by the Bible (specifically Catholic teachings). The series shows that the Bible can be interpreted to explain anything, it depends on the nature or character of the interpreter.

To watch or to wait....
