Hitchcock always cameos in his movies. He was in the musicians apartment winding a clock in this movie. Had to watch it more than once to finally locate him.

It's your Hitchcock that's brought me back to sign up with you guys again. Well, that and doing such great films, and I see you have L.A Confidental coming up. Nice to see you in a full length reaction again.

I would recommend watching every Hitchcock film. Some are certainly better than others, but any movie fan will find something to love about each one.

Until maybe the 1970's, a single man or woman renting an apartment would be violating their lease by letting a person of the opposite sex stay overnight unless it was a close relative. "Respectable" apartment building owners didn't tolerate immorality.

I like that The Birds is basically just a flat out monster movie.

Can't remember but it may be that the color process was still Technicolor but using the VistaVision process. I guess the modern comparison would be HDR (Technicolor) plus UHD (VistaVision) today.

And Double Indemnity opens up the work of the one of the great directors, Billy Wilder - Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, The Apartment, Some Like It Hot, Ace In The Hole. Sunset Boulevard and The Apartment are my faves.

Psycho's really interesting in that because, Hitchcock had done half a dozen color films previous to that - and films that used color in amazing ways.
Neal Romanek

Yeah, it's sort of like talking about Martin Scorsese - there are far more great movies than stinkers. And even the "bad" movies are better than most other directors' good ones.

Sorry...i misread your question! Ones I didnt care for are Stage Fright, The Man Who Knew Too Much , I Confess, and Family Plot. Not that they were bad per say..just not the classic Hitchcock films like the others.

All of the above tbh. Its hard to pick a fav, but forced, I would say The Birds, then Vertigo. A word of caution though..Vertigo takes patience and attention, and perhaps more than one viewing. He uses color as cues to what is happening, but the payoff is worth it. Its a mans obsession taking him down a rabbit hole lol.

Another great classic thriller / mystery I'd recommend is Charade. While not directed by Hitchcock, it's very similar in style and tone and a great watch.

So many great, great, great Hitchcock movies. You can't go wrong. Also consider Shadow Of A Doubt (which Hitchcock said was one of his own faves) and a really early one, The Lady Vanishes.

Double Indemnity for the win.

And the first major studio film to be shot and released in color was was Becky Sharp (1935). Although tinting the film - sometimes frame by frame, by hand - had been done almost from the beginning of cinema 100 years ago.
Neal Romanek
2022-02-18 15:56:15 +0000 UTC
The film was shot in VistaVision which was a process that used more of the 35mm color negative by flipping the frames sideways. It was one of several big screen processes Hollywood launched in the 1950s to compete with the growing medium of TV. Seeing this on the big screen at the time would have knocked people's socks off.

North By Northwest is a Must See Hitchcock !! I love also "Torn Curtain " with Paul Newman

Loved this reaction! You guys were fun to watch with one of my all time favorites. North by Northwest is another stylish, fun and suspenseful thriller. Hitchcock also did gorgeous black and white cinematography in his earlier films like Rebecca and Notorious - both suspense, psychological thrillers. Can’t wait for the next Hitchcock reaction!

The Wizard of Oz was in color (1939). The opening credits said Rear Window is shot in Technicolor.

Whenever you're ready to delve back into the realm of suspense, you can never go wrong with the film noir genre. I would suggest "Double Indemnity" with Fred Mac Murray, Barbara Stanwyk and Edward G. Robinson. On the lighter side, if you want a good laugh, you might try the spoof of the film noir genre, "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid", with Steve Martin. 😆

color film was actually around way before this movie.. just wasnt used as much. Hitchcocks movie "Rope" from 1948 is his first color movie.. also shot in seemingly one take..

So glad to see you enjoy another Hitchcock! Even though he has many classic suspense and thriller films, not all Hitchcock films are great...he has some missteps just like any top film director. There are plenty great ones left to see , such as THE BIRDS, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, NORTH BY NORTHWEST (a really fun adventure-caper), REBECCA, and VERTIGO to name a few.

I LOVE The Burbs. One of my all-time favourites! I remember hearing the writer of The Burbs (think it was on the DVD commentary) talk about how Rear Window inspired him to write the screenplay. I think Rear Window was even his working title. I'd love to see a reaction for it on this channel one day!

Very young me switched the TV to HBO mode (back then, there was a little box that sat on top of the TV with a big button on it and when you pushed that button, the TV switched to HBO) and sat down on the couch to watch whatever HBO was going to show, because that is what you did back then and the movie "Dressed to Kill" came on. And, just as my young mind was exploded by the opening scene, my mom entered the living room.
It was kind of traumatic for both of us, but for some reason I was the only one who got restricted to his room for two days.

Another great one! I'm glad these older movies aren't dying. Love you guys!
I highly recommend Gattaca (1997) with Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, and Jude Law. A rare sci-fi mystery.
Also The Fugitive (1993) with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. An all-timer.

Oh, and by the way, Grace Kelly, who was originally born and raised in my hometown of Philadelphia, would later marry into royalty and come to be known as the Princess of Monaco.....DEFINITELY not a man! LOL

You missed out on one of the hallmarks of the Hitchcock experience ----- were you able to pick out The Master himself?? One interesting touch he was known for was inserting himself into one of the scenes. Now you have to go back and watch it again! LOL!

While watching this I was thinking this kind of reminds me of The Burbs. If you liked this movie you will like that one. It's kind of like a mystery/thriller kind of thing but also a comedy as well. It's with Tom Hanks.
Alex

They had color in the 50s?? I thought there was no color until 1970s.. Or you mean it was filmed in color as in the original film has the colors.
I can't remember but I think it's like something that the film captures the color but that TVs just didn't have the tech to be in color or something, and that's why later on they can have color versions of older movies filmed when everything was only B&W.

Great idea mentioned above about High Anxiety. Also you should check out Brian De Palma - he sort of made a career out of his fascination with Hitchcock. Dressed to Kill is his Psycho, Body Double is Rear Window(with some Vertigo).

Vertigo next (due to the mystery elements). The Birds is awesome, but its pretty straightforward, no mystery at all. (Plus Vertigo is one of the greatest movies of all time.)

After watching a couple more Hitchcock movies, specifically “The Birds” and “Vertigo”, you should check out the Mel Brooks movie “High Anxiety” (1977). It’s a hilarious spoof of those Hitchcock movies, including “Psycho”.

There is no B&W version, this was shot in color. 1950s/40s color had a different palette compared to the film stock used in 70s, that may be why it looks bright to you. Hope Strangers on a Train makes the cut at some point, its deserves to be in the same breath as Rear Window, Psycho etc. Some other reactors were sort of blown away by it. Also Life of Brian was rated R.
