The dolly counter zoom has been a fixture since zoom lenses first became popular in the 50's but it was Alfred Hitchcock who became famous for them. Then Scorsese makes them high art in Raging Bull.

Scorsese's stuff isn't my personal taste, but just watching how artistic this film is - I believe this film innovated the "dolly-counter zoom" that gives that collapsing effect (you push the camera out but zoom the lens in) - and how much the story lends itself to viewers talking about it for hours - isn't it amazing what movies used to be? This generation's wall-to-wall comic book cartoons is like eating the cardboard box instead of the cereal inside of it. Side note: as far as interesting stories with a retired-boxer-nightclub-owner character in it, I'd love to see you guys check out Buffalo '66 (1998), it's an indie, very stylishly shot, about a self-destructive character as well, with some interesting twists.

Thanks so much for this reaction. And quite moving to see your honest reaction that this is all just plain...sad.

The Hustler - yes, please. And really similar themes actually - I hadn't really thought of the comparison with Raging Bull. Good insight!

This is a movie about MENTAL HEALTH, so in that sense, a very big inspiration for JOKER, along with TAXI DRIVER and THE KING OF COMEDY.
That final shot was the inspiration for the final shot of BOOGIE NIGHTS.
Sam, you summed it up best... IT'S A SHIT SHOW. Lol

The “Joker” comparison… You all REALLY need to watch “Taxi Driver”. Like, right now.

De Niro gained 60 pounds for the "older" La Motta part

I'm always anxious when someone says they're going to watch this, the story is kind of ugly and tragic, BUT, it's such a beautifully shot and acted movie. I've seen it multiple times and I still haven't ever actually analyzed it because every time I watch it I get so enthralled. Part of that is definitely the black and white pallette (augmented by the color home movies, which they had back then btw... Relatable?), Scorcese is a true movie genius. La Motta was no hero, not even really an Anti Hero, but Scorcese made his story epic, and I love how Jake goes "meta" at the end as he recites the "I coulda been a contender" lines from On The Waterfront. Masterpiece is right.

Awesome reaction to one of my all time favorites movies. You mentioned how this reminded you of Joker but Joker was actually inspired by two other Scorsese movies, Taxi Driver and King of Comedy.
