Léon: The Professional (1994) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Hey Everyone! In case you missed the community post on YouTube, we had some difficulty with the YouTube edit of this film, hence why it is not up yet. Unfortunately, it has also been the craziest week for both of us with our full time jobs, so we have not had the time to re-edit and re-upload. In the chaos of trying to get the edit fixed, I completely forgot to upload the full length reaction! This much of a delay hasn't happened to us before, so we sincerely want to apologize. We hope to have this all resolved as soon as possible.

Léon: The Professional (1994) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

I was a little worried when TBR mentioned how much he loved the movie, but that he hadn't seen this extended version... some people react pretty strongly to Mathilda's inappropriate advances towards Leon.

That movie is called Lionheart, it's always been called that from the beginning, anything else is just a new name for another country, but since it's an American movie, the first name is Lionheart. Also what if filum?

Wow those extra scenes were not in the version I saw in the cinema when this came out over here in England. It was simply called Leon. There wasn`t even `The Professional` in the title, and those extra uncomfortable scenes with Matilda saying those inappropriate things towards Leon. And that first ring trick scene was not in the version in cinema here either. The ring trick was at the end where he tricked Stansfield, so there must have been multiple versions over here as well. So TBR I totally agree with you about preferring a version without those added weird dialogues of Matilda being inappropriate, and yeah there weren`t any scenes with her on a job apart from the paintball long range shot into the park guy. I just love Gary Oldman, just how talented is that bloke LOL, so different in every role, so years after this movie when he was in Harry Potter or Batman or Spiderman or whatever he just is so diverse, and his American accents always make me wonder if he is doing them properly so although I guess a lot of non US actors might use a generic US accent I`d love to know what you think of Gary`s US accent in this filum? As I`ll bet someone as talented as Gary would put a proper amount of effort in. The whole music score as a symphonic masterpiece along with those masterful shots I fully agree Sam and TBR, just so perfectly combined. Powerful powerful masterpiece. Art is the perfect word I agree with Sam, totally yes yes yes. It still always puzzles me the amount of filums where the titles get altered later on down the line, like with Jean Claude Van Damme film particularly A.W.O.L (Absent Without Leave), which I found out only a few years ago is now known as Legionnaire. So maybe it`s to do with releases in the UK vs. US but yeah seems to keep cropping up I find now with movies from late 80s or 90s where I suddenly find out the titles have been changed since. Weird! HAhaaa :-D loved this reaction, thank you again TBR and Sam. Love your channel, your after filum discussions also are equally as enjoyable as your reactions during whatever you watch. Laters!

Speaking of interwoven, the music/sound cue of sleigh bells (?) for Willi One Blood (the rasta) when he first appears on camera, walking towards the apartment at "noon", is one of my favourite movie music cues of all time. It's a tiny detail, I suppose, but it stuck with me after all these years. Fun fact: Willi One Blood has a song on the Dumb & Dumber soundtrack (Whiney, Whiney). How random is that?

American test audiences were really disturbed by the scenes where Mathilda tried to seduce him and where she was training to be a killer. So it was edited and released as simply: The Professional. Also, this movie was written and filmed by Luc Besson while he was waiting for Bruce Willis to be free for The Fifth Element. And I think Gary Oldman was also just waiting around, so he agreed to be in the first movie.

You mentioned enjoying the music, it's from Eric Serra who's worked with the director Luc Besson on many of his movies including Subway, Nikita, The Big Blue, Fifth Element, Joan of Arc, and a bunch of others. He's got a pretty unique style and clearly works closely with Besson seeing how interwoven the music is with what we see happening.

Portman's infatuation with Leon was certainly creepy but Leon steadfastly refused to put up with it and the theme that ended up underpinning their relationship was father/daughter. The 'tough hero who gets softened by daughter figure' trope always works if done right, and here it's done well although they could've reduced Mathilda's creepy advances. I guess they did in the final theatrical cut?

Aaron Barlow

Oldman is the GOAT actor IMO. His character was slightly deranged and megalomanical so it was a good portrayal he evoked the right combination of creepyness and hating him required.

Aaron Barlow

Darn, I can only stream the 1h 49 minute version.

"And although I like Gary Oldman in virtually everything I've ever seen him in, I thought his performance was way, way, waaaay over the top in this." *points at door* Get out! ;)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

About Central Park. That’s not what was always in the middle of the city. Until the 1850’s if was a mostly black neighborhood called Seneca Village. The land owners were forced out and the churches, school, cemeteries and everything else was razed because others wanted a recreational place in the city. Also, the same year The Professional came out Gary Oldman played Beethoven in Immortal Beloved.

Chandra

Everything else you said i agree with, but i found Gary Oldman's performance to be electrifying in this.

Armchair Wizard

😌 No worries.

Nick of Time

I do prefer "The Professional" version, but they're both excellent films. The longer version gets slightly cringy with their relationship in a couple scenes, and the montage with their killings together just seemed unnecessary. And although I like Gary Oldman in virtually everything I've ever seen him in, I thought his performance was way, way, waaaay over the top in this. Jean Reno and Natalie Portman knocked it out of the park though.

Eric Denney

Ahhh, the extra creepy version. This is a movie I loved when I was younger and now, in my 30s, am thoroughly creeped out by. Knowing more about the director and some of the requests he made of natalie portman during filming definitely doesn't help. Still, some upsides.

Nerd Going Outside

Uncut / Extended / International - Not sure the name, but it is the longer version of the 2. The true “Leon: The Professional”, not “The Professional” -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Is this the theatrical cut or director's uncut version?
