War Movie Poll!

Help pick the War movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen We Were Soldiers, so this would only be Sam's first time reaction.

Comments

Thin Red Line also has the most packed cast of characters I have ever seen in a film, period. There are so many notable actors all playing ensemble roles.

Owen Davidson

These are all great choices. The only films on this list that aren't A-tier are probably We Were Soldiers and Fury because they have cliches and lack social commentary. Fury and Were Soldiers are still solid films with excellent special effects, but compared to Come and See, for instance, they're not deep and don't stick with you.

Owen Davidson

Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence Of Arabia and Bridge On The River Kwai are the three greatest of David Lean's movies. He's like Hitchcock or Scorsese or Kubrick - every one of his movies is great. But those three -- oooh boy.

Neal Romanek

Yeah. I mean war is mean spirited and ugly, I just have an issue with a scene or two where / how the movie chose to show that. The part with the prisoner left a bad taste. I thought it was unnecessary. I don't dislike the movie, I just don't like it as much as others

Smooticus

Agreed!

Smooticus

I'll have to look up that channel. I try to push "the classics" or less widely known movies as much as I can - younger audiences deserve to see them. I recently watched Dr Zhivago with a friend and she was blown away

Smooticus

Although I don't expect them to do "All Quiet On The Western Front" (the original version) any time soon, you are absolutely right, it is still a fantastic, very powerful movie that retains it's potency almost a century later. (extremely ground-breaking in it's sound design, also; most movies from 1930 have much inferior sound). Really great. I wouldn't be surprised if Mia Tiffany does it one day on her channel, if she ever does a month of war movies, I think that's the best bet, though you never know. Like you said: it really holds up.

Tic Toc Melody

I've seen 'em. "Thin Red Line" is really good, and I love Malick, definitely more than Cimino, but I'd rather see a "Deer Hunter" reaction, and I think it's a better - and no less-groundbreaking of a movie. And with all due respect to "When We Were Soliders" it's not in the same league as either of those other two. One is much more formulaic and Hollywood, the other two are one-of-a-kind pieces of groundbreaking cinema. Anyways, I wouldn't be surprised that they're not winning the list, not when you have "The Deer Hunter" on it.

Tic Toc Melody

Actually, I must commend you for all the Kubrick you HAVE done! You are THE Kubrick reactors, as far as I'm concerned! But no rush getting through them.....he only has 11 movies, and only 10 essential ones! You've already done 5 so you're halfway there! Woo-hoo! And to think I knew you way back, when you first saw The Shining! :D

Toc

Y'all should also watch both versions of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930 and 1978). Both are exceptional productions - the '78 version being made for TV, but still first rate and is truer to the book. The '30 version can be fairly gritty even by today's standards

Smooticus

It's like 0.5 seconds long lol but the Director actually went through several animators trying to get the deer falling the way he wanted and it got given to me and he loved it.

Aaron Barlow

LOVED Jojo Rabbit! I wish we could do a first time reaction to that one. We saw it in theaters when it came out -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Apocalypse Now and Platoon are already on the channel :) We haven't seen MASH though -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We hope to get to them all eventually! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Wow that's crazy cool! We actually saw American Sniper in theaters when it came out -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Awesome! Here are six for a poll: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) Unforgiven (1992) The Wild Bunch (1969) The Dollars Triology: A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), The Good, the Bad & the Ugly (1966) Tombstone (1993) Dances with Wolves (1990)

Mitchell Smilie

We have! Unfortunately, the reaction is blocked in some countries :( -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We have seen Parasite so unfortunately we cannot watch it for the channel. Train to Busan is one of our favorites! Thank you for the recommendations. -Sam

TBR Schmitt

You got it! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

True. "Deer Hunter" opens very slowly, be ready for that. But it's a Best Picture winner, and deserved it. By the time you finish it, by design, you will have gone through every single human emotion.

Mark Kelso

Does Jojo Rabbit count as a war movie?

Neal Romanek

Same.

Sean McDonough

No Apocalypse Now? or Platoon? Or did you already cover them, I didn't see them in the video list. And Don't forget MASH, though that's more of a comedy.

Opie Wan

Those are great choices.

Neal Romanek

I’m 90% positive most people just haven’t seen any of the films I vote for in these polls—My fist & second choices are currently the bottom two. 😕

Damiana_Dimock

Also if I may suggest an off the wall war movie that slips by, Ike: Countdown to D-Day is a great film, gives a different perspective of the war.

Samuel Bruce

I voted for We Were Soldiers, but Deer Hunter is an ultimate classic, just so long though...

Samuel Bruce

If you ever decide to watch American Sniper I animated the deer getting shot at the beginning. :)

Aaron Barlow

Brilliant film!

Catherine LW

Fury is mean spirited and ugly.

Catherine LW

I'm not as familiar with those choices. Curious if you've done Saving Private Ryan

Rick Trujillo

I've plugged Born On The Fourth Of July before, as my favorite Tom Cruise performance and I'd like to recommend it as a war movie, but it's really more of an anti-war movie, and a true story from someone who was there.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I think as a history major with a background in military history I have a different view on war movies. I tend to see too many historical inaccuracies. Paths to glory, Jarhead are good movies. I also like the duo of Flags of our fathers and Letters of Iwo Jima. I like war movies that show a different angle

canakavian

but if I may I would like to write something else. I had a weekend when I first saw enough movies I finally saw the Parasite (great Korean comedy) - The Trip (Norway movie 2021) thats was awesome and brutal.. I like a lot.. - Arachnophobia - good but not scary - Army of the dead (2021) - watchable but not much good. Still best zombie movie Train to Busan. and few more average..

David Hron

I have issues with this pool, dont much like any this movies. It is good movie for sure, but not my favor. I find some quite boring I always like to look at: Memphis Belle A Bridge too far Where Eagles Dare Battle of Britain Tora Tora Tora.. much much more.. cant remember all and and some were written by someone else (Patch of Glory - great movie)

David Hron

I’ve only seen a handful of the list. I want to see what your Patreons choose and just watch it along with ye.

PIG

I’m a sucker for classic Hollywood: “Twelve O’Clock High”, “The Story of G.I. Joe”, and one of my all-time favorites “The Best Years of Our Lives”. All made during or after WWII so the experiences seem very fresh. You could also check out “Five Came Back” about five of the most successful/greatest filmmakers of the era who imbedded with troops to record history and how it changed their lives and art forever. William Wyler made one of the most famous and harrowing accounts recording the B-52 missions with “Memphis Belle”.

Michael Soukup

Good list. For my money, The Deer Hunter is one of the best movies of all the movies. Some other war movie *must see's*: David Lean's two masterpieces Bridge On The River Kwai and Lawrence Of Arabia, as well as The Great Escape, Gallipoli and Paths Of Glory. A personal favorite underrated war movie is Enemy At The Gates with Jude Law, Ed Harris & Rachel Weisz, set during the Battle of Stalingrad.

Neal Romanek

Yes, Breaker Morant is great!

Neal Romanek

Yep, that's the definitive movie about WW2 in Eastern Europe. Brilliant and utterly devastating.

Neal Romanek

Continue your Kubrick survey with “Paths of Glory”!

Michael Soukup

I chose "We Were Soldiers". Suggestions for future War / Military movies: "Fail-Safe" (1964), Henry Fonda, Dan O'Herlihy", Walter Matthau, and a minor, quick, dramatic turn by Dom Deluise "Tears of the Sun" (2003), Bruce Willis, Monica Bellucci, Cole Hauser "The Wild Geese" (1978), Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Roger Moore "The Dirty Dozen" (1967), Lee Marvin, John Cassavetes, Charles Bronson "Kelly's Heroes" (1970), Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland "Paths of Glory" (1957), Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker "The Boys In Company C", Stan Shaw, Andrew Stevens, James Whitmore Jr.

Miles E Coburn

Breaker Morant is so good!

Sean McDonough

Yes!!!

Sean McDonough

Dog Soldiers! For a great surprise reaction lol

Aaron Barlow

Wow, that's a no-brainer, "The Deer Hunter". I hope no one gives you any spoilers. However for FUTURE war movie polls? PATTON - written by Francis Ford Coppola, and starring George C. Scott (from Dr. Strangelove). And Kubrick's PATHS OF GLORY. Those are two of the best. I see other good titles suggested, including on this poll, but those two are definite absolute top-echelon war movies.

Tic Toc Melody

The Big Red One is a decent war movie & one of the few non Star Wars movies Mark Hamill has been in.

_Crimson_Fkr_

And even more suggestions - Gallipoli, The Big Red One, and Cross of Iron

Smooticus

Definitely +1

David Lengyel

Come and See is a movie everyone should watch at least once

Candidates for the next war movie poll: Patton (1970) — Kelly’s Heroes (1970) — Breaker Morant (1980)

Bob McFadden

we were soldiers, fury, and hacksaw was so good i would def recommend them for sure!

MIke

Third.

Arki Kali

Ngl, I was pleasantly surprised by that one!

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Ooooh, I'll second that one! :)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

Come and See is the most harrowing, but also really smart. I'd recommend getting to it eventually.

Jimmie V

Need to get Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World in here.

KremitLeFroge

For a future poll, please consider The Hurt Locker (2008)

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi should be on here!

David Crabtree

There are a couple of movies about Midway, 1975 and 2019. I personally prefer the newer one, but others like the 70s one.

Texas Anla'Shok

The Deer Hunter is very, very good, but it's definitely not everybody's cuppa. When you sit down to watch that one, pack a lunch. :) And include some good liquor.

barn ninny

For a future poll choice I highly recommend Windtalkers 2002 with Nicolas Cage

Terry Lee

The Thin Red Line is the most unique War movie.

Arya Amirsoleimani

Are you guys open to watching some westerns?

Mitchell Smilie

Not a fan of Fury - too much technical BS to sell a point - but that's my own problem

Smooticus

A suggestion for future polls, Zulu 1964 film, possibly the greatest war movie ever made, based on the true story of the battle of Rorke’s Drift. Plus Michael Caine’s debut film.

Lee

Thin Red Line is unique among war films - large in scope, but beautiful poetic, personal amidst all the chaos.

Mark

I would suggest The Great Escape (1963) a classic ! And it has one of the best scores ever

Garmonbozia93

All good movies!

Sean McDonough

May I suggest a war movie for a future poll? :) Dunkirk (2017)
