Blade Runner 2049 (2017) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

Comments

I know this is an older reaction, but I'm just watching now. If you remember when Ryan Gosling's character K brought his holographic girlfriend Joi out into the rain after he got her the emanator so she could move about freely. At first the rain was going through her, as it should, but then the rain seemed to start gathering on her skin. Sam remarked that she had seemed to become solid, but if you look closely at her hand when they focus on it, you can see that she actually begins to digitally produce the appearance of rain drops on her skin. Presumably to appear more real for K. So I guess her whole appearance, down to her wet hair and clothes was of her own making. Really cool detail. Hats off to Denis, as per usual.

I second Prisoners. Edge of my seat the whole movie. Very good mystery.

I liked very much your exchange at the end. Good sci-fi makes you wonder about -supposedly- taken-for-granted concepts, and blade runner series make clear that humanity (in the sense, of what makes you human) is not an easy definition. I saw the original while in high school (on broadcast TV here in Peru!!) and this one at the movie theater on 4K and both made a huge impression on me. Thanks for the ride and Keep up the good work!

Javier Loza

Yes! The Bautista short is "Blade Runner 2048: Nowhere To Run". It's around 5 minutes long. Check YouTube. Thanks for your replies. 😁

Mr. Writhms

Yes the acting was incredible! Sometimes it takes awhile for films to really be appreciated but we’re so happy to be watching them now 😊 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Absolutely! I’m so glad you enjoyed it again! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! I think it’s sort of a similar take as 2010 was to 2001. Pretty different movies, but both great parts of each other! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes! I feel like we’ve maybe had this on a poll but I’m not sure. I mean Spielberg and Kubrick, it sounds like a winner to me already! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Oh I like that theory! It definitely lead me to believe K was the child haha -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Ooh yes! The colors were beautiful but also a tons of visual representation! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Yes, absolutely! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I agree! She was on a mission of her own, I think -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We didn’t! But I know we would both love to see more Bautista. Worth it to go back now? -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you! Hope you enjoyed the reactions 😊 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you! Haha yes! Too funny 😂 -Sam

TBR Schmitt

We haven’t done one yet, but considered it after Fight Club! I’m not sure how well received it would be, or maybe a live re-watch along with you guys? 😊 I haven’t seen Drive but I think TBR Schmitt loves that movie if I’m thinking of the right one. Yes! Arrival was incredible! I remember we talked for so long after leaving the theater haha so much to cover! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

Thank you for the recommendations! -Sam

TBR Schmitt

I haven’t seen any Dune films, but I’m excited to see more work from Villaneuve after this! -Sam

This film is a masterpiece. And it's so good it gets you to care about a hologram. I wish it did better at the box office but I guess it's somewhat poetic considering the original didn't do well either.

Easily one of the best sequels to ever have been made. Every aspect about this film was impeccably done. The acting, cinematography, direction, score, editng, writing, etc. was all A+. Watching this again with you guys made me appreciate, again, just how well this film was made. It's emotional, exhilarating, thought provoking. It's everything you want in a film.

This movie definitely had a story to tell and I really like the themes. To me it feels like this movie does compliment the last one in some good ways. But without the Original movie, this plot doesn't really exist. So it's kind of cool as two parts of a whole, that keep recurring.

Lee Salvemini

I highly doubt anyone else will recommend this, but you guys should do a reaction to AI: Artificial Intelligence. Its another hard sci-fi film that was really misunderstood when it came out. It is directed by Steven Spielberg who took the reigns from Stanley Kubrick before he died. It is a crazy interesting movie and a weird mixture of Spielberg and Kubrick. (The cities of Blade Runner remind me of the city in AI so it made me think of recommending it to you both.)

Shaun2342!

You brought up the question of why K was given the daughters memory. I think part of it plays into the question that Wallace brings up with was Deckard introduced to Rachel as the purpose. Was K given the memory with the intention that one day he would solve the mystery of that memory.

Erich Bomke

One of my favorite aspects of this movie is the lighting. K's Joi in her scenes with K uses green lighting to visually represent her. So when he's on the bridge and not his Joi appears its full of pink and purple which are contrasting colors of green.

Erich Bomke

I would say this movie is now the gold standard for VFX. Like you mentioned, there is so much that feels so absolutely real that you forget visual effects are behind it.

Erich Bomke

Did you get a chance to see the short prequel films? You would have gotten more character development for Sapper (Dave Bautista) as well as Wallace.

Mr. Writhms

Blade Runner 2049 and the Mist all released in one day. You guys rock.

PIG

As you didn't mention this i really wanted to comment on Love's character. Really liked her silent and swift brutality and determination. I think she had her own plan and didn't approve Wallace that much.

Great reaction-- and great conversation afterward! I think Gosling was perfect for that role—maybe too perfect. His acting style always has this sort of emotionless demeanor about it. I’m not saying it’s bad. It works for him. Perhaps the Tyrell Corporation dabbled in film actors before it went bankrupt. 😃

Mr. Writhms

So glad you guys watched this one! I was surprised how strongly I was hoping you would after watching the first one. Two things: 1) I would watch you guys re-watch this one as you notice things and put more pieces together. I don't think you've done a re-watch reaction, but what better place to start! 2) I loved Drive (2011), which is also Gosling, and some interesting things in this that reminded me of it. Would love to see you watch that one. Oh! Third thing: 3) you've mentioned already seeing Arrival, I love that movie so much I'd love to see you guys do a watch-along even though you've already seen it. ✌🏼

Better than the original just because it’s more character focused. Villenueve is one of the best directors working today. Defintely check out Prisoners and his foreign film called Incendies. Both are quite shocking and depressing so space them out and don’t watch them back to back.

Arya Amirsoleimani

Many people who say the new version of Dune said you had to go see it in the theaters. It was only until I saw this film that I knew this Director could bring the best vision of Dune to light. Denis Villaneuve isn't a filmmaker he's a film artist.
