2021-05-09 07:01:29 +0000 UTCA few more things: Yes, like BoB, we see surviving veterans speak before the episodes, although many were already dead by the time this series was filmed (10 years after BoB). It is also based on the memoirs of several Marines who feature in the series. Regarding the battle at Alligator Creek. Alligator is a misnomer. That was a River called the Tenaru. One of the Marines wrote that after the battle, he saw binoculars on one of the dead Japanese. He swam across the river to get it. He then saw a V shape in the water after he returned. Later he heard crunching sounds. It was crocodiles eating the dead Japanese. He was sickened by the sound, which continued all night. The jungle will become an enemy to these men as well as the Japanese. Malaria, dysentery, hepatitis and jungle rot (you already saw the sores at the end of this episode) will plague the men. Tropical heat, venomous snakes, spiders, scorpions, huge lizards, various biting and stinging insects, rats and other hostile creatures made the environment terrible.

It’s not until the US starts gaining momentum and initiative when you’ll see more daytime fighting. The wounded Japanese soldiers frequently used suicide killings on US corpsmen (Navy-Marine term for medic). So they stopped trying to help wounded Japanese and just killed them if found. Also, you saw that patrol in the jungle, where the Japanese tortured and mutilated them. This was a shock for US troops, as the Germans never did anything like that. This is a very different enemy and an alien culture we faced in the Pacific. Looking forward to the next one!
