I didn't even realise this was on here! Such a great movie. I hope you watch Sunshine (2007), written by the same author, Alex Garland, which is even better imo

Two in her party were killed by a bear. Two others mutated to a point that they were no longer Human, but I am unsure if they are 'dead'
What I am talking about with the reaction though is the mirror of her husband, Kane. Whom didn't kill anyone in the film. Now he did watch a suicide, which may or may not have been his fault, but we didn't see enough of the video to be sure.
I'm not talking about the event as a whole, just a specific part of it. His reaction wasn't, stop the shimmer, or protect everyone, but to destroy a lifeform with no real evidence that it was harming anyone or anything.
Kane back at the base even said he wasn't sure if he was Kane or not. Perhaps it was the doppelganger that killed itself thinking it was the real one.
All in all it's a very complicated movie and like all good Sci-fi has great topics for discussion and thought.

Well, it had already killed everyone in her party (and the previous parties, not counting her "returned husband".) So I wouldn't exactly say that's a knee-jerk reaction, myself.

I think it is interesting that your first reaction to an alien lifeform born on Earth was 'kill this thing." Simply because it was mirroring our life, even after Lena said (and we saw) that SHE attacked them.

Annihilation is one of my favorite alien sci fi films not because it is the "best" film ever, but because it is so alien.
No attempts at communication. No understanding, or an attempt to. Just an alien race of some kind, either purposefully or accidentally colliding with Earth and teraforming it.

Since you liked Annihilation, you might also like Alex Garland's TV mini-series. Devs (2020), on which he wrote and directed all 8 episodes.
Annihilation and Devs have a similar vibe to them, and the writing share a familiar weird, off-kilter, out-there feel.
With Devs, the difference is that he has almost 8 hours to tell his story and unfold the mystery. What is Devs?
