War Movie Poll!

Help pick the War movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen Black Hawk Down (2001), so similar to Terminator, this will be Samantha's first time watching.

I'm afraid The Deer Hunter is the only right answer here.

Neal Romanek

Is the final cut better than the theatrical? Haven't seen it yet. I've always preferred the Theatrical over Redux, myself, not that Redux is bad or anything, there's some amazing thungs in it like the French Plantation sequence.

Sam Bennett

Apocalypse Now is a tough watch, but an all time classic. I'd say it's required viewing for any filmgoer alongside everything Coppola did in the 70s

Sam Bennett

Both movies are good, but I prefer The Hunt For Red October, maybe becuase I saw it in tthe theater and all.

If you see Apocalypse Now, I also recommend checking out the 1980 parody, Pork Lips Now which is available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Yt93DVyjSZE It's really low-budget (i.e., no budget), probably shot on VHS. But, it's still good for a laugh. It's made by the same guy, Ernie Fosselius, who made the only Star Wars parody of the day, Hardware Wars (1977): https://youtu.be/Yt93DVyjSZE I should also mention there are 3 versions of Apocalypse Now: Theatrical (147 min.), Redux (196 min.), and Final Cut (175 min.) Coppola, obviously endorses Final Cut, but I do find Redux interesting for re-watches..

I would almost scratch The Thin Red Line as a war movie. It really isn't. It is a movie that explores existentialism, god, grace and the intersection of them and nature. If you go in thinking of it has a traditional war movie it could be very trying especially if you are looking for a traditional narrative.

Although I’m a fan of Apocalypse Now it’s a tough watch and not for everyone.

ADPTBL

Might I suggest skipping the movie and just banging out a few episodes of Band of Brothers? It is better than anything on that list anyway.

Chilly Willy Penguin Bones

If I wanted to rewatch any of these it would probably be Hunt for the Red October, based on previous reactions TBR Schmidt would probably enjoy The Thin Red Line over the others I reckon

CosmicDebris

Def, a cold war movie, and is technically the first "Jack Ryan" movie, and probably the closest to the books since he's supposed to be a nerdy analyst, not a gung ho action guy.

Mr. Writhms

My plea for The Thin Red Line. Directed by Terence Malick. Possibly one of the most gorgeous looking movies ever made. Explicitly anti-war. Amazing soundtrack. Avoids a lot of the cliche's of war movies by expressly not having a main character, stars dozens upon dozens of people. Dialogue is mostly Voice Over ruminations from soldiers. Non traditional narrative style.
