It was revealed on AEW Dynamite that the match would unify the AEW International and Continental Title into the AEW Unified Championship. We were told that this match has been on the table as a tentative plan for almost a year, and that the firm plan was to get to All In for this match dating back to December, before Kenny Omega's NJPW return.
We have not heard that "Intercontinental" Title was considered for a name, but all indications that were given to us about the title is that it would be booked as and perceived as another top championship in AEW as opposed to a "mid or upper mid card" title. The match announcement was credited internally as the reason AEW moved over 1,400 tickets in the last week.
For those asking about the future of the Continental Classic as a result, the word was it was here to stay.
If for some reason there was any doubt, the injury on Dynamite was an angle.

Regarding the C2, it should have nothing to do with a belt. Winner is awarded a trophy and the honor of being the 2025 C2 champion. Not unlike the old PrideFC GPs. Winning was an honor you carried your entire career.

2025-06-12 23:12:23 +0000 UTCThe idea of the belt in the tournament could potentially work, but the way they do it really handcuffs them when it comes to booking the final. Like, what happens if the current champion doesn't make the final? Are they still champion until the tourney is over? And if not, who is? Since they never explained it, you pretty much knew it would never come up. The tournament itself kicks ass though so I'm glad it's not going anywhere.
