Details Behind WrestleMania 39 Match Vince McMahon Changed Result Of

Author's Note: This is a story we heard about in the fall of 2023, but couldn't report at the time. Of late, we've had a lot of inquiries about the story, and are able to run it.

--

Vince McMahon is apparently out of WWE perhaps once and for all, but even after "stepping away" in 2022, several of his changes and adjustments were felt throughout the year in 2023.

In early 2023, Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp reported on The Hump that WWE talent had learned that Vince McMahon's influence was being felt in the months leading up to WrestleMania. Among those included several talent not being featured on WWE TV, changes to shows, and the like. We’ve heard of one of those significant changes that was made to WrestleMania 39.

Fightful has learned that originally, Finn Balor was scheduled to defeat Edge (aka Cope) at WrestleMania. However, Vince McMahon wanted Cope to pick up the victory, despite Adam Copeland pushing to put over Finn Balor. This was a match that featured the "Demon" version of Finn Balor, helping culminate a feud with Judgment Day, which Cope had created. Creative and industry sources have claimed that Balor was originally scheduled to win, but McMahon pushed for the change. We aren't even sure if the talent themselves were told of the original plan or shift, as usually that gets relayed the day of the show in WWE.

There was a lot of speculation that the oft-criticized Cody Rhodes loss to Roman Reigns was a Vince McMahon call. While Vince McMahon was in favor of the decision, we're told that had been the plan pretty well all the way through.

The next night, McMahon made sweeping changes to Raw After Mania. One source at the time compared McMahon to the Tazmanian Devil, running in, eating up the script, ruining the show and leaving.

Hilarious ending

Hopefully people stop the edge hogan shit

Ninjafoxy

Vince always hated Balor.

The Lane Family

Hogan only wanted to put over hogan to win the belt back later

Flameducky

I mean, he did a program with him, but I don't believe he ever wanted to put Kidman over. (Russo did, but the best Hogan did was blade for Kidman.) HH couldn't get past the size difference to truly put the guy over

Mike Wall

Same as he did with Ultimate Warrior. He'd put him over, but also expected to go over on him at a later date

Mike Wall

Balor has never recovered. He was already in a bad position in the first place. He really needed that win desperately.

Tempo1337

Man, fuck Vince. Everyone could see Balor should have won that.

Lord Zypher

Honestly it always felt of to me that Finn Balor lost Edge in the blowoff of there feud. They where tied one win a piece & given how Finn at the time was positioned as RAW top heel at the time losing the blowoff to Edge never made sense since he was being set up to go for the World Title after WrestleMania

Matt Hennessy

Wow, i'm......not fucking surprised about this in the slightest since I felt that Vince McMahon influence at the finish of the Hell in a Cell match at WM 39. Kudos to Adam Copeland for trying to push for Finn to win that day. Just another stupid dumb decision made by Vince.

Juan Ortiz

This was at Mania after losing an I Quit already. If Cope was that big of a politicker he would’ve definitely pushed to win.

And didn’t he also try to put over Billy Kidman

Robert Mccarthy

Kudos to Edge for wanting to put over Balor. Considering Edge hit the bricks a few months later, I think we can call this the one final dumbass decision of the Vince McMahon era

Joel Wood

Vince screwed Finn Balor

Robert Mccarthy

Even Hulk Hogan wanted to put over Bill Goldberg

Joel Wood

I always felt he changed that finish, it made no sense for Balor to lose there considering he was number one contender months after, in hindsight that lose really hurt balor and hasn’t recovered to a top spot since

Said Amadu-Suka

not shocked in the slightest, everything pointed towards Finn winning and he’s never recovered from this. vince hated that man fr

Ethan Seech

Just hope that HHH can bring the best out if Bálor this year. He’s been through it so far, maybe an IC title reign and push for WHC near the end of the year

Sam Beynon

Was that raw after mania the one where Seth Rollins came out, stood around, and then left?

Sid Frenchman

Wow

Johan Acosta

I KNEW IT! This match always felt wrong to have Edge win.

Brad Woodard

RIP the narrative of Cope being Hogan
