Fightful Select has confirmed that Rey Fenix is now a free agent. It was expected that Fenix could end up having months added to his AEW deal due to injury time, but Fenix is now gone from the company, and eligible to sign anywhere. We're told that he's expected to sign with WWE imminently, and Fanatics have already began preparing merchandise for him, with creative coming up with ideas.
Fenix and Penta were both likely headed out of AEW last year, but their deals ended up being extended when the company heard they were negotiating with WWE. Beyond that, Fenix made some vague allegations about inhumane treatment that AEW denied privately, but ignored publicly. Those we spoke to in the company expect that Fenix likely would have had to agree to a non-disparagement in order to get out of the deal. Fightful had spoken to sources that indicated in November that AEW was actually considering letting him out of his deal before those comments complicated things. Penta has also done his best to avoid trashing AEW in recent interviews, preferring not to talk about it.
There had not been any substantial creative plans pitched for Fenix in recent months, but he, Penta and Pac were slated to win the Trios Titles last year before the contract issues came up.
Those that we spoke to in WWE said they expect him there, and it was a forgone conclusion that he'd end up in the company. He would likely join the main roster with his brother, Penta.

If they don't want to be there anymore, perhaps Tony Khan should take that as a message that there's something wrong with AEW. But no, that's clearly not the lesson there.

I could give my opinion on the Fenix & AEW situation but I won’t right now this is the best decision for all involved. Fenix is free & TK can focus on people who wanna be there. I do think Tony should of had the death riders kill the Lucha Bros last summer as a write of rather than add injury time & not use them. To be positive there are a lot of great tag teams in WWE I wanna see them work with like Fraxiom DIY War Raiders Creeds MCMG SP Los Garza LWO (either version) New Day New Catch Republic
