What's up with AEW, WBD and Fox?
Added 2024-09-09 20:02:25 +0000 UTCAEW is closing in on a new deal with Warner Bros Discovery, but that might not be all.
Speculation has ran rampant over the weekend about the possibility of AEW programming also appearing on another network. To be clear, we've heard that the WBD-AEW deal is very close to being done, but hasn't been completed as of yet. When there were rumors of an announcement being made at AEW All Out, WBD reps simply told us that talks are "ongoing and amicable." Both sides expect a deal to be done and the partnership to continue for years go come.
Enter Fox.
Fox just finished up their five-year run with WWE, and they may not be completely out on pro wrestling for the future. Thought the relationship briefly soured with WWE before Vince McMahon's exit, Fox had long looked at bringing on additional pro wrestling content. Years ago, they nearly landed MLW for Tubi, which resulted in a lawsuit. In recent months, Fightful reported that they'd also been interested in a seasonal wrestling program for Tubi. There has been discussion backstage in and within the TV world that select AEW content could be headed there.
After the Shockwave trademark emerged, there was internal speculation in both worlds that a new program could be headed to the Fox family of networks, whether it be Fox itself, Tubi, FS1, or anywhere else. One source close to Fox had indicated to Fightful and Beyond the Bell's Andrew Zarian that there were no troubles in moving ads for wrestling, but that the cost of Smackdown cut into that quite a bit, and that Fox would be interested in keeping wrestling as a part of their programming with the right deal.
This would come as a major change for AEW, as when they added Collision to their current WBD deal, exclusivity was worked in, which is why AEW Dark no longer exists. We're told that regardless of what deal is reached, the exclusivity clause runs through the end of the year, but was a part of the WBD discussions that could see a return of non-exclusive programming.
At least one source near Fox's side did claim that the two sides had contact, but when reaching out to Fox reps, they did not return our request for comment or insight. Neither AEW or Fox have confirmed these talks.
It's worth noting we haven't even confirmed Shockwave is a show, but there has been discussion of an AEW show moving to Fox
There will be more on these rumors during Fightful's Beyond the Bell with Andrew Zarian and Rich on Tuesday Morning.

The censorship issues with Smackdown were because they were contracted to keep it TV-PG. If the AEW deal didn’t include that, they would have no such issues.

2024-09-13 20:16:52 +0000 UTCI wonder if Fox would want a specific roster like they wanted with wwe you can only see these wrestlers on this network

2024-09-10 07:47:06 +0000 UTCIt's certainly not out of the question. Tony gave the oddest answer to that question at the scrum.

2024-09-10 06:31:27 +0000 UTCI disagree, Dark was just basically what RoH is currently, which shouldn't be behind a paywall. Most people that are subbed to Honorclub are there for the tape library or RoH ppvs.

2024-09-10 06:19:04 +0000 UTCI wonder if it's going to be a mix of recap from different shows (to introduce the fox audience to their product) and MAYBE a few exclusive matches, the kind that are taped during live shows.

2024-09-10 05:05:50 +0000 UTC@Matthew - I agree. Like an old WWE Livewire or Superstars program recapping the prior week, maybe throw in a special match taped pre-live taping or something. That would be a great idea. Still holding out hope that AEW can create their own Lucha style show in a totally unique presntation, but that's for another day!

2024-09-09 23:19:33 +0000 UTCHopefully theyre allowed to bring dark/evelation back to youtube, i feel removing them has hurt their developmental

2024-09-09 23:17:06 +0000 UTCExactly, a younger demographic that AEW has been trying to reach and add to that it's a free/ad/supported platform, that also expands it's reach. I think if it happens it's gonna be a "best of the week" type show with maybe some exclusive promos and a host of some sort.

2024-09-09 23:09:12 +0000 UTCPeople shouldn't be too quick to dismiss Tubi... Per TVinsider " Tubi had a higher average May viewership than Disney+, Peacock, Max, and Paramount+"; has 78 million ACTIVE monthly users, and 63% of their users have never had a cable package or "cord-nevers" - this would target a demographic who likely never had cable to watch AEW in the first place, just Youtube / social media content

2024-09-09 21:54:34 +0000 UTCI wonder if Shockwave Is on a fox network and then roh is on tubi

2024-09-09 21:37:20 +0000 UTCY'all have been tricked into thinking they're the big bad when it comes to censorship. In all reality, they are just average. AEW would likely have a more family friendly product for their airwaves (emphasis on tag feuds, less blood) but only for that single show. I think it'd be a nice change of pace in the AEW schedule weekly!

2024-09-09 21:32:22 +0000 UTCHour long rampage-ish morning show leading into their college football/basketball coverage? 💸💸💸
Shout out to Gianna Michaels. Need her at DPW ASAP
2024-09-09 21:30:02 +0000 UTCWBD picked up their option last year which pushed back when AEW can talk to outside networks. That exclusive negotiating window ended a couple months ago so it’s not surprising that another party is interested now.

2024-09-09 21:05:11 +0000 UTCHell no to Fox. Censorship sucks.
Andrew Bates
2024-09-09 20:49:30 +0000 UTCI hope that means Collision and or Rampage become ROH shows. 3 AEW prime shows a week is a big ask. But good on them if they can get paid.

2024-09-09 20:45:52 +0000 UTCDisney owns FX not Fox

2024-09-09 20:45:29 +0000 UTCMaybe it's another non wrestling show

2024-09-09 20:40:26 +0000 UTCFox won't allow us to hear crowd cussing. Does anyone think they would allow a bloodbath on their networks. Can AEW mute itself? If they did, the fans would riot.

2024-09-09 20:39:14 +0000 UTCSmackdown wasn’t profitable because of the price tag they were paying for it, not due to a lack of revenue generated. The article itself says that Fox had no problem getting ad buys. AEW programming wouldn’t cost them anywhere near what Smackdown did, so that would solve the issue of profitability for the network. But, suggesting anything would go to the main Fox network is purely speculative at this point. The main thing to take away from this is that AEW is trying to get out of the exclusivity with WBD, which could see Dark come back and could see AEW have the ability to pitch content to other networks and expand their footprint or, at the very least, add programming back to YouTube.

2024-09-09 20:26:58 +0000 UTCShit dude, put AEW on TBS/TNT and see if Fox would be interested in a night of ROH.
Will Landrum
2024-09-09 20:24:13 +0000 UTCWhat I noticed about the "shockwave" trademark is that it doesn't really fit the ROH name..so if this is a new show,it would be in addition to dynamite, collision, rampage and ROH 😳

2024-09-09 20:23:48 +0000 UTCThose WBD talks shave been deep for over a year now, I'm not surprised to hear that other companies are getting involved at this point. October is their 5 year anniversary of Dynamite too, although who knows how long the contract is for with Rampage and Collisions additions.

2024-09-09 20:21:55 +0000 UTCIf they muted WWE feeds when the crowd started chanting, they are going to have to go crazy muting AEW crowds.

2024-09-09 20:19:53 +0000 UTCIf FOX does end up picking up an AEW program, which channel would be more convenient for AEW? I know FOX is heavy on the censoring.

2024-09-09 20:18:59 +0000 UTCThe AEW on Tubi jokes are coming full circle now. No way they have a show on the Fox network since Smackdown wasn’t profitable with Advertisers in Fox’s view.
Alvin Porras
2024-09-09 20:18:14 +0000 UTCI hope they consolidate Rampage into Shockwave because 4 shows a week is a lot. 5 on PPV weeks

2024-09-09 20:17:50 +0000 UTCCould a syndication deal a la Superstars or even ROH that would have AEW on antenna tv be on the table too? Thanks
Andrew W Haro
2024-09-09 20:17:20 +0000 UTCIs there a possibility that this is a ploy from AEW to get WBD to increase the price of the TV rights ?

2024-09-09 20:16:16 +0000 UTCVery surprising to me but how things change. Turner-Murdoch used to hate each other and would have never done business together in the 90’s.🤣
