Update On WBD-AEW Deal And Offers

Things continue to move well on the AEW-WBD front.

Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp  has spoken with a number of sources within AEW and WBD about the possibility of an impending announcement. WBD sources confirmed there was still some red tape to get through, but that another offer for a long-term television deal was made recently to All Elite Wrestling from the company that they’re very confident in. Figthful reported earlier this summer that Tony Khan was set to meet with WBD’s David Zaslav in Paris during the Olympics. Khan confirmed as much was planned, and Fightful has heard that both sides considered that meeting productive. We’re told that the deal came after that.

One WBD source called the offer “extensive,” but didn’t elaborate on what that, meant outside of saying the terms of the deal were “literally extensive,” but that the offer is in AEW’s hands and that they’re reviewing it. AEW and WBD seemed optimistic that a deal would be agreed to, but we didn’t hear of when an announcement could be made.

Sources close to the situation said that even previous to the most recent offer, All Elite Wrestling had been offered “at least double” the amount of their previous deal. A few important things to note is that there are no publicly available numbers for their current television deal, and that deal evolved greatly over the body of the deal. It’s also worth noting that we don’t know if “at least double,” are for the same amount of programming, or if additional elements are involved.

AEW currently has Dynamite, Collision, Rampage worked into their deal, as well as exclusivity for AEW programming, which is why Dark no longer appears on Youtube. We’re told that “any and all combinations and possibilities” have been explored. AEW has also produced reality shows, done numerous specific crossovers, and ran pilots on WBD digital channels. PPV, next day streaming, library rights and ROH packages are all things that could greatly alter the amount on any deal compared to what it was at for the first four years of AEW.

There were rumors internally that WBD had discussed a “shift in PPV strategy” as it pertained to AEW, but they did not respond when we reached out for comment on that. WBD reps had noted earlier this year that any deal that they negotiate will likely have Max in mind. WBD had made inquiries with AEW as of last year about the possibility of that shift in PPV strategy, per WBD sources.

Sources in WBD and AEW continue to be steadfast in claiming that they have been in ongoing discussions regarding a new deal, or adjustments to their deal and how to continue working together since last year. Sources from each side that we spoke to expect the partnership to continue “for years to come.”

AEW’s current deal goes through the end of the year, as they originally had a short-term agreement with WBD in 2019, before extending long term for the start of 2020.

Regarding word that a WBD memo outlined the value of AEW programming, that was actually a prediction and estimate spreadsheet produced by a Fightful Select subscriber, and was posted in our discord. WBD said that they knew of no such memo.

I find peacock very easy to use with pretty good content.

For sure man. I just go on there to get updates on what I like but there’s just so much negativity I can’t take it anymore. Need my rasslin news though.

Kinda shitty how many toxic trolls are on Twitter and ruin a good experience, huh? It's ridiculous

LOL

slick

Unrelated/semi related, WWE & AEW especially, must have tried to buy PWG’s library, or at least rights to it right? Anyone know if Superdragon’s referenced this at all?

Michael Buckley

Warner/Turner will always be destined for failure for ruining his dominance of WWE And them partnered with AEW is the real Love is Blind couple

Michael Buckley

I didn’t follow Olympics, but heard endless media members, and friends, praise Peacock’s delivery of them Referencing as Peacock’s initial rollup, along with WWE included was a nightmare Any current WWE/Peacock user have any feedback on their platforms improvement over past few years?

Michael Buckley

Centralized, well working platform would be HUGE But props to them for last 1-2 PPVs specifically. It’s available on almost every medium, and Triller has been perfect for me Bleacher report is and will most likely always be a disaster, which is what concerns me most for Warner deal if technology is not at HBO Max’s quality

Michael Buckley

I’ve wanted this since AEW began, up until TNT with the NBA. Separate from AEW, I really worry about the future of Warner Bros I now strongly feel that Amazon would be the ideal unexpected blessing for their next 5 years

Michael Buckley

I personally cannot watch WWE But I root for their success each and every day Acknowledge and love their important improvements as they occur As an actual wrestling fan, how could anyone not want wrestling to succeed

Michael Buckley

That initially reported $200-$250M per year, pardon the pun, all in, is fair market value. Not under valued, nor over valued.

Michael Buckley

Fully agree in a general, as increased viewership is most likely through awareness of their company/product, not better/changed product But AEW’s PPV’s are their heartbeat, and acknowledged accordingly by their fans. A company should have to pay $150M annual for rights to live PPV, replays, and content library (9 PPVs x 100,000 average x $50 estimate for initial $50M)

Michael Buckley

I’m fascinated by final deal number, and not specifically for AEW or WWE, but for the networks impression/proper valuation of wrestling and it’s audience WWE is an outlier, and not because of it’s ratings/actual value to buyer of course Similar to a Chris Rock or Dave Chappelle getting unimaginable deals for comedians/content special producers, what is the content deal for other proven comedians If Impact, NJPW or CMLL 100K weekly, are the offers in line with comparable 100K and under media deals with similar weekly consistency & demographics AEW is the greatest example in wrestling’s history to date of whether a media company pays under value (most often), adequate value (occasionally), or absurd over pays (only WWE has received to date, which AEW should in content streaming wars) It only would get at or below market value if media companies still lack respect for wrestling, ignoring all tangible important metrics Or WBD gets major discount due to AEW’s loyalty and belief it’s best network for their visibilty and growth Major kudos to WWE being among the greatest companies in history in the understanding their consumers, all consumer behavior, and how it relates to the market The Netflix deal could have been a major win for them at half the paid cost, as the increased audience/viewership/cultural relevance is invaluable. But they still also got $5B

Michael Buckley

So glad I joined this patreon so I can delete Twitter. Tired of 500 weird replies to every good wrestling tweet fightful or others put out

Kvon Dudley

It’d be a failure imo if they don’t get PPV on max. Probably the fastest way to grow their audience at this point is adding their PPVs to a location where non AEW fans will see and watch.

the same old and wrong as usual

All the grifters and goofballs will come after Sean for this then when the deal is announced, will in fact end up looking like bigger grifters and goofballs.

Brian Bayless

This. I can access every PPV I've purchased on BR since the original DoN and then the last 2 I began purchasing on TrillerTV (with the Double Play of All In/All Out already pre-ordered). I have been very satisfied with every PPV purchase but would gladly welcome switching to the PLE model as my wallet needs a rest LOL

Josh Howard

Says the dude with the wwf avatar?

Troy A Palek

Seeing as they canceled Tacoma FD and have moved new episodes of Impractical Jokers to TBS I would not be surprised by that move. As it stands TruTV is basically nothing but IJ reruns, movies, and World's Dumbest episodes at this point so turning it into a cable sports channel is not a terrible idea and could be a great TV home for ROH.

Josh Howard

Bleacher report as well, it’ll say I only have 72 hours to view. Unless it changed, I haven’t bought the last 2 ppv’s

Jeremey

I just hope they announce the deal soon, so we don't have to hear from idiots about AEW going out of business. But I guess nothing will stop that Haters. It's like they have no comprehension how much money multi-billionaires have.

Kranepool7

What service are you using? I have access to every PPV of AEW's that I've purchased through Bleacher Report.

Doogie

he just stays hating on literally everything they do.

Zigg Zag

Always

Good news

Jamal Johnson

Any year now.

JD gonna shit a brick

Brian The Dean

That’s the first I heard of that. But now it would make more sense. ROH is more sports based anyway.

Steve Corrente

TruTV I seem to recall is being renamed to TNT Sports.

MB

PPVs on Max. ROH on TRU TV. Flipping Dynamite to Mondays . The dream.

Steve Corrente

I've thankfully been off social media for a while now, so I'm somewhat out of the loop. What's Bischoff apparently been saying?

aloneinabox

AEW and ROH on Max needs to happen and it needs to happen soon. I hope the deal is good enough that it would include PLE's too. I don't want them replicating WWE things but on the digital streaming front having everything on Max would be absolutely huge for AEW.

@ComicConScott

*haters moving the goalposts now*

Roy Bailey

All I ask is for ppv to be on Max, I can’t keep dishing this money on ppv’s and only having a certain amount of time to view it

Jeremey

I hope it's ready to announce at All In

Roy Bailey

Take the deal and run to the bank, Tony.🤞👍

Scott Newcomb

I think being accessible on HBO Max + having a larger advertising budget will be a significant shot in the arm for AEW ratings and attendance. I think it's easy to overlook how easy peacock having everything WWE for $5 makes it to become and remain a fan

Flameducky
