More on Roderick Strong signing with AEW, leaving WWE

Roderick Strong has debuted for AEW in a shocker after leaving WWE.

Strong showed up on the April 26 Dynamite, helping Undisputed Era ally Adam Cole. Strong had been off WWE TV for months, and WWE had been dead silent about his status with the company. The last we'd heard, there was discussion about pitching the idea of having him coach through the remainder of his deal, though we don't know if that pitch ever made it to him.

Strong re-signed with WWE in 2021, and the company was set to make him the focal point of a re-vamped NXT Cruiserweight division in which they had big plans to enhance. However, when Triple H fell out of power with the brand, those plans changed significantly. Much of the same happened with the Diamond Mine stable that he headed up. Originally it was to include Arturo Ruas and Strong's wife Marina Shafir, but both were released by the company. Instead the team changed significantly, with Stokely Hathaway, Hideki Suzuki and Tyler Rust all also being released.

In 2022, Roderick Strong asked for his WWE release, which we're told was initially rejected. However, those that we spoke to in WWE say that they believed his deal was to run into next year, though that's hardly confirmed.

Recently, 2K was told to exclude Roderick Strong from the game. WWE talent that we spoke to had not been given an update by WWE about his status or lack thereof with the company, and we'd simply been told he'd not been at the WWE Performance Center in quite some time. About the only update we had from those close to him of late was that he was doing well physically and cleared to wrestle.

AEW talent we spoke to were pleasantly surprised, as Strong is well liked by most in the industry.

UPDATE: PWInsider has reported that Strong was out of WWE late last year, and had been in talks with AEW for quite some time.

We reached out to those close to Strong a couple of months ago, and was simply told he was healthy and doing well.

Strong was kept away from the roster ahead of his debut.

Comments

I tried finding info on that in his Pro Wrestling Wiki page, but it wasn't listed there. Gonna guess I can check it out on Honor Club when I'm able to resub.

CSDX

Was not expecting that. Very fun arrival.

Justin Ackley

My hope was that HHH kinda traded the silence of Roderick Strong's release with the clause in Regal's contract about the not appearing until 2024, that way, Regal could be Smackdown GM, while Adam Pearce is Raw GM

Jack Diehm

The fact he disappeared last October & was randomly not included in 2K23 did make me wonder what’s the story. Sean do you know if him leaving was a case of his contract expiring or his release being granted

Matt Hennessy

Well it was his ROH Theme

Jeffrey Pollard

Hoping Marina Shafir can join Britt and her faction against the Outcasts now.

Vicki Langteau

I love that his theme song is End of Heartache by Killswitch Engage, specifically from the Howard Jones era of the band. LOVE that variation of them.

CSDX

I doubt it. If that were the case, he could've been there sooner.

Drew Quesada

Strong and Danielson are on the same roster again, only a matter of time before they cross paths

Richman

Part of a deal involving Regal?

Billionaire Chimp

Massive W for AEW

Kyle Pribila

Is there any chance of Bobby Fish coming back?

Jose Rolon

I was crying tears of joy seeing Roddy hit the ring, clear house, and hug Cole. I am so thrilled to see Roderick Strong in AEW! My guy is gonna do the graps!

pourblackcoffee

Hell yes. I’ve missed watching him wrestle.

Joseph Cloud

That hug in the ring had me struggling to regulate my emotions

patchrick

Not gonna lie, while this is a good/great pick up for AEW, the news itself is about as surprising as Tuesday coming after Monday.

Eric Justice

He's still a free agent.

Drew Quesada

Can you look in to Bobby Fish? ya know, for a UE reunion

Phillip_ino

UE vs Elite as soon as KO is healthy. Let’s gooo!!!
