Just commenting: Erick asked Quilatalap to use damaging magic on him before having any confirmation of his intentions. I feel that that information could be great trust-building. You know, it's good that Erick did not use a plus-one. The craziness of the shades, who collectively love magic too much, and Erick, who loves it just as much personally, would have added up.

2020-12-24 01:19:29 +0000 UTCSo, this comment has spoilers for future chapters, because I don't think anyone will be behind on the patreon and was trying to confirm something. Spoilers are immediately below. So . . . yep, Erick asked the archlich to use a damage spell on him before Rozetta tried getting him to trust the guy. I can see why the archlich had the impression Erick was wanting lessons from him--he already started with it. Erick does love magic though, probably kept him sane in there. More spoilers, in the form of a collection of which actions did Erick take during this whole encounter that would bother other people the most? I mean, in world. I find all of these actions very inline with Erick loving magic, people, and not being a ruler. Poi, being his bodyguard, would hate the whole "hit me with blood magic" thing. (Though Quilatalap might be served by knowing the timing of his friendly relations with Erick.) And the drinking of alcohol/hallucinogenics. As a mind-mage, I'm not sure what his opinion is Erick learning about the minor defenses that he does when Erick goes on to actually take a lesson with his new teacher. Eh, those are probably normal methods. But reading the book the librarian gave him? And the other stuff in the lessons that cover soul magic. All hopefully normal lessons and not illegal. And then, major major spoiler . . . Yeah, letting shades live. That one seems likely to piss everybody off, literally, because of half-measure concerns from every side. Silverite won't like this. Killzone. Jane. Anhelia. And, those shades . . . blessed via Koyabez artifact. Mostly. Hopefully mitigates that Silverite hating him. Although Erick created the blessing that did that on his own. The all-stat thing is a big one. Intelligence would have been big on it's own. He's the one who mucked about and got all the other stats unlocked. Permanently, it seems. Including the one slated to replace charisma, which actually ought not to be had by anybody not a shade since they were just debuting it. Maybe an adventurer stole some from the source? Likely not. So, a stat that no one else has that is changing his interactions with others because he's seeing a bit too much. Eh well, if he still let shades go knowing they were lying, him noticing lies hopefully won't cause him too much emotional crisis. It totally could, though. He created extra copies of Janes laptop. Wow. That one's a big one that I nearly missed. He's also being worshipped by a city that now has no other leaders. An extremist city. I'm not sure he can be as hands-off with that as he's tried being with Candlepoint. Kinda big point, here, can he even be a citizen of Spur if he has any control over that city, which is right next to it? Not that he's actually lived a year in spur to be a citizen of it, funny enough. Or has been in the army made him a citizen, btw? There's still that converter angel problem that he now let the sentient 'necessary evil' Koyabez fragment, adventurer adjunct of course, leave without trying to talk to: AFTER Koyabez made his own silver star an artifact, I think he could have talked to her. And it hurt me when he recast prismatic ward when he got home; Not when he cast it, that was great. When he recast it while playing with magic while using a skill that will penalize his recovery for doing so based on the mana he spends. Ouch. I actually did forget about the Manotaurs. Which he can't leave in either of his cities--if he does try helping Ar'Kendrythist, he'll be the first one to do so and remain the best positioned. But they used to be adventurers. Can't see leaving them their going well. . . . holy heck he made extra copies of Janes laptop. And let the most dangerous shade be the one without a do good mandate. (I believe she'll try, anyway.) Which is the same one that Silverite likely hates the most. If he was a citizen of spur, will he remain one? I mean, killing shades = good, to the wider society. Driving shades out of Ar'Kendrythist = what everyone was trying to avoid. Doing both without the total war anyone expected or those remaining shades acting together, anymore? Or even in individually predictable ways? Terrifying. But, redemption would be such a tautological thing if it were only for the redeemable. Can't front load that one. Good people can't be redeemed; Have to be bad to have it apply.

2020-12-23 23:13:46 +0000 UTCGreat work! Really enjoyed this chapter. World building is why I read fantasy and I felt like this added some solid depth. The shades have felt like an aimless horror trying to undermine the script, which always seemed too simplistic. I'm sure theres a lot of false/subjective narratives here, but I'm hoping this is broadly true so the Shades are more nuanced beyond kill/destroy to foster change.

Much more fun to read than worry about the news :) corrections: 'roads full over overlooks' over -> of 'Erick bet' -> 'Erick would bet' 'man and gained a hole' and -> had 'led into her vacancy' <- sounds awkward, but it might just be me 'beside to the entrance' -> 'beside the entrance' 'just was beginning' -> 'was just beginning' 'the two half swung' half -> halves 'lay a flooring' lay -> lies 'was looked made' looked -> likely (or something similar) 'tiara made of stars' -> 'a tiara made of stars' 'starbight eye sockets' starbight -> starbright you use 'Sanguinizer' & then 'Sanquinizer' one is spelled wrong :) 'It this sounds similar' It -> If 'Sundering yourslef' yourslef -> yourself 'and I not many' -> 'and not many' 'trying gain' -> 'trying to gain' 'Half in on Veird' -> 'Half on Veird' 'is in perfectly tuned' -> 'is perfectly tuned' OR 'is perfectly in tune'
