Startups can change your life as an early-stage employee with regard to equity, however, the time you join and the convention in which that company exits determines how much you can walk away with if you choose to do so. My experience has also led to me bootstrapping my own startup as a solo founder ;)

It was a risky move so I'm working at a big tech company to balance the risk. However, if their upcoming series A does well, they'll be set for an IPO, and then we could be set for 3 lifetimes
