2025-09-03 01:45:22 +0000 UTCA really cool cameo I recently came across was in Lindsey Fitzharris' book "The Facemaker" about the New Zealand surgeon Harold Gilles, who was putting solders' faces back together during WWI - within a year of being widowed, Kathleen Bruce (Mrs Scott of the Antarctic) was a nurse on the frontline and because she was a sculptor, she took plaster casts of the faces of the injured, so the surgeons had pre-swelling/infection guides to work with. She was epically awesome and her husband was the least interesting thing about her, tbh. (Yes, I'm a bookseller, so all comments come with book recommendations. I often listen to the podcast while cataloguing.)

2025-09-02 10:19:38 +0000 UTCBig hello from Australia- specifically South Australia, where we learn a LOT about Douglas Mawson and the generally not-fun time he had alone with his thoughts in Antarctica. I also have friends who've done year-long stints on Antarctica - in my TBR pile (okay, dry stone wall next to my bed) is David Knoff's "537 Days of Winter" which is the memoir of a team who were at the end of their time on Antarctica when Covid broke out. Not knowing when/if they would be leaving, what would be waiting back home and at the beginning, whether the most recent tranche of visitors might have inadvertently brought Covid to the team show that despite all the mod-cons, Antarctica is still a place of not-fun times.
