Lunchbag Art: Totoro

My Neighbor Totoro came to theaters for a limited screen re-showing, so we took daughter to see it (her first time). Predictably, love at first sight.

I'd forgotten how lovely a movie it is, too. I wish Americans would remember that children don't need constant stimulation to stay interested in things. They are intrigued by mystery, and silences, if you talk to them the right way.

Yes: silence and stillness are things Japanese films have that American films just don't have the confidence to use. In the original version of Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky, there are a couple of very significant moments of stillness and silence--this in an action film. When a dubbed release was put out, these were scored with music, because God forbid that an audience should have just silence. Totoro does have music most of the time, IIRC, but it does have those beautiful moments of landscape and contemplation, and the joys and terrors of a real childhood... but with a little magic.
