Cool Stuff Saturday
Added 2017-05-13 13:00:58 +0000 UTCFirst things first: candles were lit. *nods* Thank you, Candle watchstanders. People in need, you were remembered. In two weeks, we do it again.
Meanwhile, on to Cool Stuff! I wanted to share some cool stuff I've found lately. I'd love for you to share any cool stuff you'd like to rec too, in the comments! Let's pass some awesome around. Here are mine:
- Alphaville released a new album this year, which prompted me to look up their discography and discover they released one in 2010 too, and these albums make me SO HAPPY. So 80s synthpop fun! THANK YOU ALPHAVILLE!! My favorite song off the new album is "House of Ghosts"; and off the album before that, it's "Call Me", though "I Die For You Today" is a close second.
- A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah Maas starts a series that I read to the end and mostly enjoyed. It's a 'attractive faeries and the human girls that fall for them' story, so if you're in the mood for that kind of thing, go for it. >.> But worth it to me for the interesting turnaround in Book 2 where the narrator decides to un-fall in love with the love of her life to fall in love with the apparent villain.
- I have discovered that avocado oil + salt + nutritional yeast (this is the brand I have) (but don't buy it at Amazon, it's stupid expensive) make for a really good bowl of popcorn. We pop our popcorn in a wok, and then I coat it until it's GREEN and add the yeast and it almost tastes buttered. :9
- If you have the patience for a staggering barrage of profanity, the HBO series Silicon Valley is actually really, really funny if you've ever worked in the tech sector.
- And a (much much) less profane TV series: after a decade of lying untouched after its truncated run on Cartoon Network, Samurai Jack is finally back in a ten-hour "miniseries" on Adult Swim which is supposed to wrap up the story properly. (At last!) The original Samurai Jack was one of the most amazing series I've seen on TV: gorgeous artwork, so many long pauses where you were supposed to exist in the silence. Like the cartoon equivalent of poetry. So worth it.
That's what I've got! What's worth checking out in your world lately? :D

I introduced a co-worker to Jeff Waynes War Of the Worlds. I expect you have listened to this rock opera that takes place between the earphones. Awesome! I still like it after all these years. The moody blues, many moogs, the London symphony orchestra and a famous narrator. The first words are taken directly from the book .

2017-05-14 08:57:18 +0000 UTCI've been plowing my way through books of various quality this week, but not make me want to stand up and wave them on a rooftop. What I did find today was the new King Arthur movie. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but the reimagining of the world, the way they handle flashbacks/out of body experiences, and the music. Oh the music. It's like flying and running off a cliff down a hill where you can barely keep your feet and driving your car way too fast, all at the same time. I'm going to climb inside this soundtrack and not come out for a YEAR.

2017-05-14 00:34:15 +0000 UTCI recently read _A Long Journey To A Small, Angry Planet_ by Becky Chambers, about the episodic adventures of a multi-species, multi-racial crew on an old cargo ship. It's mostly different cultures, friendships, & relationships. Folks hereabouts might love it, too. --filkferengi

2017-05-13 17:57:56 +0000 UTCI tweeted last night about a band I found on YouTube called Hula Hi-fi. They do covers in a "Hawaiian noir" style, and it sounds pretty great. Makes me want an old-fashioned noir detective story set on a tropical island. :) Their album's on Bandcamp if anyone wants to check it out. https://hulahifi.bandcamp.com

2017-05-13 14:07:28 +0000 UTCI have finished this series, and it is great. Not on my list because I finished before Christmas, and I used my kids copies so I was not reminded by book or kindle. But yes! great series.

2017-05-13 13:46:41 +0000 UTCNiel Gaiman has a book View from the Cheep Seats. I got it from the library, and found I was taking notes on all the other books I should look at. Holly Lisle has a book, 'I See You', that I found to be very enjoyable. Murder amidst paramedics. Alas, the aftertaste was that I was confused by not getting a good description of the characters. But recommended as fun read. I am liking her expensive books more all the time. She has a series that is well written, Tales from the Longview. Claw the Way to Victory is a wonderful collection of furry stories. I have not finished it, but the stories I have read have been excellent. I am considering subscribing to Apex sf mag. The one issue I got was solid good stories. I found Naomi Kritzer to be wonderful, which is why I followed her to that Apex issue. More fantasy than furry if furry at all. Her Comrade Grandmother story collection is a wonderful introduction to her work. Zen DiePietr writes wonderful SF stories. It has a feel of yours somewhat Maggy, you might enjoy his Dragonfire Station series. Only since I know the follow on story, only perhaps because the second reading was evident that the protag had no knowledge of who or what her father was, Fledgling by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller was real fun, recalling distantly Have Spacesuit will travel, but only for that theme, which was minor in HSWT. I kept singing 'whose your daddy' a verse from a song by the zombies back in the day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiqXwMbTMEM Going through my kindle, so many that I wanted to enjoy that somehow I didn't. Sad. Extreme Medical Services by Jaime Davis was fun. The local Lasfs LOSCON is having Carry Vaughn as GOH this fall. She has such a wonderful character in Kitty Norville. Best book series all year. And over the Thanksgiving weekend I get to meet her! OK, I might have to buy a physical copy instead of library or kindle. Bujold produced another Pendric book, a cause for celebration. I discovered Octavia Butler's parable series. Awesome. And I finished a short story of my own and am shopping it around. Got rejected by Analog so far. Furry, vorish with kindness, some tension between those two ideas.
