Your Favorite Words

As time goes by my grip on my vocabulary gets more tenuous, so I'm always up for reminders of useful, interesting, or forgettable words.

What are some of your favorite words? What about ones you often forget or mix up with others? Share your treasures!

Bane, inscription, corona (the aura, not the beer ;)).

Lyssa

I just tripped over trying to say "femininity" twice in one day. I can type it just fine, but all those Is with an M, two Ns, and a T stuck in is apparently a single-word tongue twister.

Love this sketch!

I hear Gaiman thinks "damp" is a perfectly fine word, but is thoroughly turned off by "moist". "mmmmmmmmooooiiiiiissssssst."

There is a fanish song that celebrates that word. And of course, the Polish incident.

The tin factory accountant's inventory task. Tin tabulation.

I read about half of Gaiman's non fiction book (From the Cheap Seats). I took notes and found: Skew, dibber, and tannoy. The last two I had to look up. To annoy with a tannoy?

Legate. Eccentric. Superhero.

There's a move version of Cinderella with Leslie Caron called The Glass Slipper. In it the fairy godmother is really more light-fingered than magical, and is quite eccentric. She has favorite words that she likes the way they sound, how they roll off the tongue, Cinderella being one of them, plus Windowsill, Pumpkin, and I can't remember all the others (I'll have to watch it again!). Words I switch: Calvary and cavalry, can't think of the others right now. I hate how when I'm on the spot my vocabulary just vanishes...

I tend to go in for short, punchy words. Rock, for instance. Sock. Not huge with the syllables or deep meanings, but I like the way they feel when they go through my brain and out my mouth. Affect and Effect get me sometimes. And most of the Latin based words that have 'rh' in them. Rhythm. Can never spell that the first time.

tintinnabulation! *rings bells*

I haven't yet. Might in my next book. ;-)

Petrichor, for some reason, has come up multiple times recently, and I love it. I laughed when I learned 'callipygian' recently (go look it up if you're not familiar X) ). I lovelovelove color words, and think we need more of them. Niveous, virescent, mazarine, perse, give me all the color things!

Please do not defenestrate your friends and neighbors. >.>;;;;

A word I love and keep looking for a good excuse to use is defenestrate. I suppose it's a good thing I don't actually get many opportunities!

o-no-ma-to-poeia :3

mix ups? prophecy and prophesy. Dyslexia mix ups: Causal and casual. Likely more, will update when I think of them. Also fortunately my editor (libreoffice) has a primitive off line thesaurus to help. (artha is best ever off or on line, check out that app, win or linux. )
