Composition for Portraiture, Vol. 2
Added 2023-10-01 19:19:28 +0000 UTC
In this lesson (2/3) you will learn the following:
- The Art of Composition: We're going to explore how to organize your drawing so that it doesn't just look good, but also tells a meaningful story. It's like creating a visual narrative through the arrangement of elements in your work.
- Commanding Attention Through Focal Points: One key aspect we'll focus on is how to direct people's eyes to certain areas of your artwork. This will help emphasize what you find most important or interesting, making your piece more impactful.
- Shape Language: This is an intriguing idea that suggests the shapes and lines you use can convey specific emotions or themes. It's like adding a subtle, secondary layer of storytelling that reinforces what you're trying to express. Spoiler alert, it doesn't just apply to shapes- it goes for everything in the drawing.
- Creative Manipulation: We'll discuss how you can and should adjust what you seeโbe it in a photograph or in real lifeโto better fit the story or mood you're aiming to create with your art. It's about not just replicating but enhancing.
Materials to use:
- Graphite pencils
- Sketchbook or drawing paper
- Paper stump
- White chalk (optional for added contrast)
- Downloadable source image of a skull (provided in the description)

So enlightening thank you. Gives me a totally different approach to composition. So much more room for interpretation of the subject ๐

Love this video and the one of the skull, very insightful! It says in the description that there are 3 Repin academy videos but I only see two. Is the 3rd one out?

They mostly look like nonsense when not connected to the conversation I was having with Ivan. Iโll look them over and see if anything looks coherent/relevant ๐

Depends on what you are after. Bootcamp has some of the content from the BIC on my website. It also offers monthly live classes and group critiques. The BIC on the other hand is highly produced and streamlined + you have access forever.

Hi Stephen: Quick question... Which would you recommend... Your Block In Bootcamp or another resource I found that you offer via your website called, The Block In Course? I suspect the content is very similar but just wondering which one would be best?

So much information. I'm going to have to watch it several times and then attempt a drawing. I'm also going to try to apply this to my pastel paintings. They could use some improvement, too. The video works best with Chrome browser. I don't know why it doesn't work well with Firefox or Safari.

So this is complicated. I have just confirmed with another subscriber that the link is working for them- and there are some that it is not working for. We need to figure out what is unique here. If I could ask a few things: What browser are you using? What country are you accessing from? And, does the problem persist if you refresh the browser page?
