Anatomy for Portrait Artists, Vocabulary

First things first- the vocabulary section of Anatomy for Portrait Artists!

In this section, we will focus on learning and mastering the essential terminology of artistic anatomy. Having a strong understanding of the vocabulary used to describe the human form is crucial as it helps to effectively communicate with other artists, accurately describe the subject, and ultimately create more lifelike and expressive portraits.

By the end of this lesson, you will have a solid foundation of anatomical terminology that will greatly enhance your ability to study and depict the human form.

Here are some possible assignments to help internalize this info:

  1. Draw and label: Draw a simple skull and label it with the correct anatomical term (superior, inferior, etc...). Repeat this exercise until you are confident in your ability to accurately identify and label each part.
  2. Describe a portrait: Choose a portrait, either from a book or online, and describe the anatomy of the subject using the vocabulary terms learned in this lesson.

These assignments will help you actively engage with the vocabulary and retain the information better. By incorporating different learning styles and repetition, you will increase your ability to internalize the knowledge.

This drawing features the names of anatomical features (we will def get into that later) but you can also draw and label the skull with references to the vocab in this lesson.

Perhaps store the password on your web browser- this is what I do to keep track of all the various passwords I use.

BTW, I am having problems with my password. I get rejected all the time. What can I do to fix it?

Moises Menendez

Thank you for your quick answer.

Moises Menendez

I have several. There is a 3D model here on patreon that you can use to draw from as well. In addition my app will be out soon which features 3D models you can control and lights that you can move around as well.

Interesting subject. Do you own a skull? Would you recommend to purchase one?
