Block In Bootcamp, Lesson #1, Visual Style

UPDATE: This video is the introduction to the structural style taken directly from The Block In Course. It is rigorously edited for clarity and many diagrams have been added to express the concepts with a crystalline clarity.

Not all of the Bootcamp lessons are edited this way. The others that you will find are taken from the live streams only.

There are chapter markers separating the sections of the lesson:

Here are ALL of the materials you will need:

You’ve got it about the values. As for the shapes it depends on what the light and shadow give you in this instance. Clearest and simplest first. Mouths almost always come last though.

Hi, is there a video which takes Martin to the finished drawing? Thanks.

Kevin Bryden

Hey Stephen, great course, excited to be a part of it. I have a question regarding this lesson: how do you decide what features to block-in or not? Like I noticed you didn't block in the mouth or the eyes but you did go for the nose and the ear. Is this decision purely based on shadow shapes? Are we essentially just blocking in the light and shadow shapes? Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but we're only using one value (the lightest?) for the shadows during the block-in? Cheers! H

Lesson 2 is on to the structural style 👌

A lot of people are having this issue at the moment- I am working on a fix. Should work fine on a desktop though.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

where can we find the next lesson that we need to watch immediately after this one?

Luis Valdez

No worries- it works at any scale. Compare 2 places on the model, then compare the same places on the drawing.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

I have to ask a stupid question that I’ve been embarrassed to ask. Does this measuring only work if you drawing is the same size as the source image? There I said it. 😔

Phyllis Riley

Thank you!

Andy Rodriguez

In this case the study of ratios and measurements it comes down to repetition. Not dozens, but hundreds of reps.

Hi Stephen, thank you for the fantastic content of your videos. I still have a lot of trouble with the measurement phase. I understand the concept of placing the pencil in front of you and comparing it with landmarks on the subject, but I have difficulty transferring it to the paper. Any Advice?

August Oak

Thank you :)

hi Susan- the second lesson in this series has departed the site. I have mentioned in various posts that the plan was always to cycle out the older sessions and revisit those topics in new livestreams. The visual style will come back around, I promise :)

Hi Stephen, Block in Visual #2 is not showing in https://sbanavigation.com/collections/patreon/products/block-in-bootcamp

Where's access to the next lesson, mentioned at the end of this one? Is there a Block in Visual #2?

Bruce Green

I recommend a Koh-I-Noor 2.0mm lead holder. Its light and feels good in your hand.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

What kind or where do you buy the graphite (how thick is it) and what kind of holder do you use? Thanks!

Doug Hess

All available

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hey Stephen, are all bootcamp lessons available via video or do you have to watch them live if I was to upgrade to this tier?

Mark Vanner

Thank you Rachel! The video of the drawing is perspective corrected. Initially my block in is slightly narrow- but eventually it is corrected in the end.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

This video is really helpful and elaborate! Thank you for the time and effort you put into this lesson. I do have a question tho; I am quite a new viewer and I wanted to ask if the drawing is warped perhaps from the angle of the camera because things seem to be more narrow compared to the reference? Im really not sure tho because when I tried to draw the same image it seems wider than what you did but I don't know if its because I am missing something.
