Studying With Sargent, Part 1, Real Time (update)
Added 2021-07-13 06:07:21 +0000 UTC
UPDATE: This part of Studying With Sargent is now available to Entry Level subscribers as well.
Part 1 will cover the preparatory drawing for this master study. Bear in mind that though Sargent might not have necessarily made drawings this way. Our goal however, is to make sure that when the time comes to study the color and value that our drawing will not hold us back.
Part 2 of this lesson will be the first pass in oil paint. Release date TBD.
Part 3 will be the finish. Release date TBD.
When I did the lady Agnew portrait, I had a problem with erratic shininess (kind of dry area here and there). I know that using only oil and liquin defeat the law of fat on lean. I know that raw umber repels oil (Xavier de Langlais dixit) and I don't understand why many artist still use that color. How do you deal with theese issues? Do you rely only on a final varnish?

She has kind of reversed winking, kind of a Spock look at something interesting.

Hi Kin, I can't seem to reproduce this issue on my computer. Can I ask which browser, device and country you are streaming from?

One thing I found interesting, is that you say that a lot of artists tend to do bigger eyes because we see so much in the eyes.
I just, this week, heard someone say that they keep coming across artist they teach making the eyes too small. So thought it was interesting.
Wonder if there's a study on this? probably too obscure xD but would be interesting.
I've only come across making them too big before.

Thinning is difficult- I focus on not using as much paint initially. After that there is only linseed oil. Painting in a non toxic way does have some sacrifices as well...

Hi Stephen, I am a beginner in oil painting and I'm worried about toxicity of some materials. How can I thin oil paint in a nontoxic way?

I’m so excited to do this. I’m going to try to follow what you’re doing in oils and translate that to pastel as I have no oil palette experience yet. Someday I’ll redo it in oils.

I am really excited about studying this piece. However - oils just aren't an option right now for me sadly. Too stinky/messy. Maybe I can do the prep drawing, then have a go at the full thing once oils become an option in my space...

I've just started watching this and wonder if you are going to provide the image from which you are working, or are we meant to find our own?

I'm excited to start! Sorry if I'm missing something but what size canvas are you working on? Thanks
