Portrait Painting Techniques & Concepts, Part 1

It's a new year and we are now in full color! Or at least our paintings are going to be.
Converting a grisaille into a color painting necessitates a lot more than a couple of glazes.
In this series I am going to walk you through each and every step of the process.
The palette I am using:
Flake White and Ivory Black from Williamsburg Oil Colors, Raw Umber from Beckers, Alizarin Crimson Lake Extra, Vermillion Extra, and Old Holland Yellow-Brown from Old Holland.
Hi. Hope I have posted this in the right place. Can you please suggest a replacement for Williamsburg Flake White? It seems to be hard to obtain in Australia. I can get Old Holland Cremnitz white, and there seems to be a gamblin flake white replacement, or any of the Michael Harding whites? And of course zinc white or zinc white mixtures?

Haven't tried it but I am familiar. Should work ok.

I can't get any Yellow brown from Old Holland, but it seems to me the closest color I can find is Natural Pigment's Mars Yellow. Would this work? The chroma is very similar. https://www.naturalpigments.ca/mars-yellow-50ml.html

Hello Stephen! I just joined bc I am self teaching myself oil portraiture and saw your video on youtube. I have a grisaille that I have done in raw umber and titanium white that I am beginning to learn the color on. I Love your work and am interested in learning! I have a question on the colors on your palette L to R. Is it Ivory Black, Raw Umber, Alizarin, Vermillion, Yellow Ochre and Titanium white? If you could list them out that would be super helpful as it is hard to tell on screen. Thank you! Michele

Hi Stephen! Thank you again for your detailed, amazing tutorials. I try to follow your advice in detail. I now I try to paint for the first time a grisaille that I have done. I have question; when I want to balance red-I mean reduce the red in a mixed pigment- with a limited palette, how do I do that? I mean I could add green if I had it but what do I do with a limited palette. I wish you Happy New Year!!All the best from Sweden!

Thank you! I've been looking forward to this for the last 2-3 months or so since you posted the grisaille on YT. It's the main reason I actually subscribed as a patreon supporter.
