Drawing Essentials, Part 1

Comments

Thank you so much for your courses. I have only been drawing seriously for 2 months. You share a great knowledge that is easy to digest. I learned more from your free sphere tutorial than I have in 2 months. Do you all think this is the best place to start within this learning environment or is block in also a good place to start?

Aaron

Would love to give you a hard calculation, really. I can tell you that the resultant drawing will not be the evidence of internalization- its kind of like the thing you work on while the knowldge takes root.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen. Assuming that I draw 2 hours per day, how long should I expect to spend on the Atelier lessons 1 through 3.2? I am aiming for competence with the concepts as an amateur artist, not professional.

David Schnetzer

Greetings everyone, I am new here and kind of overwhelmed. If my goal is to become a portrait artist, start from the basics, where do you think should i start?

Elmer Dalangin

Drawing essentials 1 + 2 are all lecture based. Part 3 is practice based.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hey, after watching this video, should I practice? Or at what point practice/"drawing along" will be done?

Adan Mauricio Sámano Ordaz

Hi Stephen . this video is really interesting , the part on shadow and light is very usefull , well explained and is what i'm searching for, hope to find something more deep about it .Thanks so much

shaki

Thank you!

Kimberly

Sight size is very useful for Bargue. I do not use it here as not everyone will have the space to work this way. You are right that the envelope shape is where you should start. You can follow along with this exersize: https://sbanavigation.com/collections/patreon/products/psyche-of-napoli

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen. I really love your teaching style and how you really explain the concepts in such great detail. I do ask though if when we begin our Bargue's if we should start with the envelop. Also, I took a different online course where we did Bargue's but used sight-size. Is this method acceptable or should I forget about sight-size? As well, we were instructed to use vellum over the Bargue to check our work for accuracy. Is this a tool I should forget about or continue to check my work like this? Thanks so much for all you are doing!

Kimberly

Thank you for this one, love the way you started by introducing the concepts and basics, and then continued into applied examples! These are great! 🤩🙏🏽

Andy Rodriguez

I will check that folder- you should have access.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

i'm in blockin bootcamp but when i go to download your bargue sources it says I do not have access?

vasjamesart

Thank you, those thoughts hit home. (I started drawing 2 years ago. Was actually never interested in accuracy in itself. I did drawings with fountainhead pen, no corrections, straight on the paper. But then I bumped into work of students of the Florence academy of art. I was so moved by them. One thing led to another. And with studying your YouTube videos, for the first time, concepts like a good organization of values etc.started making sense to me. The almost accidental consequence was a big progress in my accuracy. But it is very good to be pointed out that accuracy in itself is a bit of a cold, or empty goal - those last words are just my translational of your advice. I guess I started tasting the taste of progress in accuracy and started focusing too much on it. )

J. Debaere

Feedback is important- principally to point out errors in thinking and organisation. It can also be good to hear about accuracy issues but this is of secondary concern. A tracing paper can be useful for this but is an artificial way to "juice" the accuracy of the drawing. If we think about the drawing as an experiment and your drawing as the proof of your method, this tracing could result in a false positive. Bottom line, it is not a black and white issue. Use a tracing, don't use one... as long as you are drawing, repeating the exercises, you will progress. It isn't an issue of it being a bad thing, just a different one.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Great lesson, as usual. I wondered what your thoughts are on using tracing paper, as a tool for self correction, in self study from 2d pictures? I tend to think it is an unnatural shortcut, so I shy away from them. But then at the other hand, I started wondering, if you study by yourself, and despite all triple double quadruple checking, keep making similar mistakes you don't see for yourself, tracing paper might be a good tool to detect this? Or does the capacity of the eye grow anyway, over time, even without experienced people nearby that can point out inaccuracies? Thanks for your thoughts on this, Joke

J. Debaere

That is the idea. The 1st 2 are kind of an info download.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

hello Stephan! thank you so for the videos I just wanted to ask to recommend that we watch all parts of the essential videos then begin practice drawings?

Lois Agyapong

Thank you Stephen ! This is great content !

You mention a term that means when two planes meet. It’s around the 1:54:00 time mark. How do you spell that term? I wanted to learn more about it. You said you posted an article about them on here but I can’t find it.

Chris Garippo

Thanks Stephen, I draw but definitely beginner at atelier methods so I will follow your advice 🙂

Mairead O Neill

Hi Mairead- it depends on your level. If you are a beginner going here next would be good: https://stephenbaumanartwork.com/collections/patreon/products/studying-proportions

Stephen Bauman Artwork

i have just joined the atelier tier & wonder if you could offer some guidance about how I should proceed? I have watched drawing essentials 1 & will continue with those but I am not sure where to go after that?

Mairead O Neill

HI stephen

Mairead O Neill

No worries :)

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Instructive Course. I love how you illustrate and simplify those complex concepts in such a clear way. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Ali Mohamed

Thank you, David!!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Exceptionnal course. Well done Stephen to explain so complex concepts in such a crystal clear way.

David Suissa

Thanks, Ana!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Great stuff, Patricia! Thanks :)

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Thank you so much. This is more than I could have hoped for. I have watched parts several times trying to absorb all the information presented. I love the details that help me to improve on my work. I will be reviewing this series over and over until I fully grasp all of the concepts that will help me to be better at my work. Thank you again.

Patricia Penner

This is awesome Stephen- very informative, thank you so much!

Ana Tilghman

Just 1 thing to clarify before I advise- you are buying panels for painting right?

Stephen Bauman Artwork

I stephen! I'm so grateful for your courses. I wanted to ask you since I am in the process of buying all my materials what kind of birch panel you use? I book marked a ton of different pages from links I saw you reply to other students with. For specifically the New Traditions Art Panels, are you using the NL219 1/4 inch Birch? Or is another one? There seems to be a lot of different options in widths, size, etc. I haven't ever stretched paper over panel before so I want to make sure I get the right stuff.

George Thomas

Hope it's ok to post this here. I found a pdf of the full Bargue book on archive.org. It's got some interesting content before the plates, which I found helpful.

George Thomas

Hi Mariana, the Canson paper is called Mi-tientes and it ais a good alternative to Stonehenge.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hello Stephen! You mentioned that the type of paper you use for bargue drawings is stonehenge or canson midtone paper? Can you tell me the name or specifications of this canson paper? I am searching for an alternative to stonehenge for quite some time. Cheers!

Mariana Campos Flôr

It sounds like you want to check out the refined edition of my proportion tutorial: https://stephenbaumanartwork.com/collections/patreon/products/studying-proportions

Stephen Bauman Artwork

These videos are helpful. I wish I could spend more time watching them. One of the questions was about proportions, please can you tell me which part talks about proportions. There were only couple of minutes about proportion in part 1. Did I miss it in part 1 or is there another video about proportions. thank you so much for these video.

Mark Twain

Thanks, Warner!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Thank you Stephen, your tutorials really cleanse the self-taught artists' confusing learning path and brought my fragmented and flawed learning system to a relatively complete piece. PS: I open patreon account because your art lessons only exist here.

WarnerCheng1024Bambu

Hi Jia, at first making a lot of very simple short drawings is very useful. This is to get you more familiar with your materials and just getting used to drawing. After many drawings like that you can start to take longer and more complex subjects.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Thanks for the positive feedback, Wayne!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Really nice tutorial . I am a total newbie to drawing, and somehow (fortunately) came across your teaching and Patreon site. This is also the first time I have ever heard of Bargue drawings, and I am looking forward to this new adventure. Also, thanks for speaking so clearly. I am hard of hearing so I appreciate the excellent audio quality of your videos, While they are a little fast at 100% speed, I find they are perfect for me at 75%.

Wayne Schuyler

Thanks Stephen for a great tutorial. The concepts you discussed make a lot of sense to me. However, I am struggling to figure out how I can practice to improve my drawing. Any advice? Thank you very much

jia liu

Great! See you there.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Thank you so much! I started studying bargue two weeks ago without guidance and I stumble on your account from proko! I will practice it before the next live!

Manal Alajmi

Coming up February 1st :)

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Just updated the model pack to contain all 3 foot slides used in the lecture.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

hi sorry, me again. were we to attempt the foot plate as shown in the video as that isn't with the others? or does it not matter which we choose? 🙂

Michael Fairless

Brill. Thank you. 😁

Michael Fairless

Thanks for the reminder. I am posting them to the Model Pack folder on google drive right now.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen. Did you provide the link to the Bargue plates? I can't locate it? thanks, Mike.

Michael Fairless

Thanks, Sebastian!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Maybe this is the format that can work- a live workshop rather than a pre recorded lesson... I will put this on the to do list.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

This was awesome, thanks. Really looking forward to the cast drawing demo. :D I'd also be really keen to hear more about figure drawing and how to organise the values in a figure.

Brooke D

Thanks Stephen 👍🏽! This series looks to be amazing, as my school work comes to a close, I will be watching these and learning, looking forward to it. Martín.

Sebastian Rivero

I’ll look into that integration. The next dates are a bit in the air with Xmas and the upcoming full color painting tutorials... I love doing these though- can’t wait for part 2.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

This is great! Love it! When's the next session? Also have you considered break out rooms in zoom, just a suggestion! 👏
