2025-04-14 14:35:08 +0000 UTCIt's pretty simple- I like to keep my values a bit lighter early on and the white ground influences my choices in that direction. Also- at the end of the painting I wanted some transparency in the background to help the sense of depth and atmosphere- the white ground helps strengthen that effect as well.

I am a somewhat experienced painter and have learned 800 ways from to begin a portrait in a traditional manner, but I always set up a ground, usually raw umber, before attempting an underpainting or block in. As I am struggling with how to start a new painting, your instruction was invaluable. Thank you!
