“You never brought up wanting to have kids the first time we were married.”

“It’s a good thing I didn’t,” she replied.

“Did you want kids?”

She tried to withdraw her hand, but he tightened his grip. Anger rose when it shouldn’t. She tried to be diplomatic. “We shouldn’t talk about this.”

“Why?”

He had to know his vasectomy was a touchy subject. “Are you trying to hurt me?”

“No.”

“Would you have told me about the vasectomy if I said I wanted children?”

His silence made her ill. She swallowed hard and looked out the window and shoved down the urge to punch him. A minute passed before she asked the question that had passed through her mind a dozen times since she discovered her mother’s past.

“Did you get the vasectomy because you thought I would try to trap you?”

Her voice was so soft, she wasn’t sure he heard but a second later he repeated, “Trap me?” as if he had never heard the phrase before.

“I had no money and you were amassing your fortune. It makes sense that you would try to protect yourself from someone whose mother had done such a thing. Like mother, like daughter, right?” Her vision blurred as her eyes filled with tears. “And I proved you right by following in her footsteps. Did you call me a whore because I’m the daughter of one or because I became one after you?”
