Added 2025-09-09 15:00:12 +0000 UTCRoth pocketed his phone, but didn’t turn to face her. Instead, he stared out at the view, lost in thought. She waited thirty seconds before her curiosity got the best of her.
“What’s going on? Why are you so worried?”
He stayed quiet for so long, she thought he wasn’t going to answer.
“Remember what you read about the residents of this building?”
His voice was quiet, grim. Her heart picked up the pace.
“Yes.”
He turned to face her and she saw his eyes were glittering and cold.
“It’s true.”
She kept her expression bland. She wasn’t surprised. There was always a kernel of truth in a rumor, but hearing him confirm it sent a trill of foreboding down her spine. “Okay.”
Her blood thickened as he started toward her. She looked up when he stopped before her. He cupped her chin and stroked the line of her jaw for a moment. He looked pensive and unhappy. She placed her hand on his arm in a gesture of comfort and solidarity. This got her a soft, brief kiss before he turned her world upside down.
“There are other reasons why I didn’t want you to come to London.”
She frowned and opened her mouth before it hit her. He wasn’t referring to the here and now.
