“You expect me to believe that?”

He allowed himself a smile. “You’re going to have to trust me.”

“I don’t.”

“That makes two of us.” A moment of honesty made him say, “I would have let the Langdon deal go through if you hadn’t targeted Jasmine. That would have taken you to the next level, but you crossed the line when you seduced my daughter and ruined her. All I want is you out of her life.” He gave Roth a moment to let that sink in before he inclined his head in mock civility. “Thanks for the drink, James.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“This is the last time I have to address you as anything, so it doesn’t matter." He bit back a curse as he climbed the stairs and limped toward the entry hall.

He paused and turned back to see Roth watching him. He stripped this man to his bare bones by revealing his darkest secret, but no one would ever think so. Roth was composed once more and had managed to refill his glass in the time it took him to make his way across the room to the exit.

“If you hadn’t tried to use my daughter to get to me, your life could have turned out very different.”

“The way you treated her made it easy for a man like me to make her believe I loved her more than you ever did.”

Hatred spread through his chest and gave him the strength to say, “This should go without saying, but if you ever come near my daughter again, I’ll kill you.”
