Snippets from Maximus' POV the night he blackmails Roth.

He dialed Roth’s number. His number would show up as unavailable, but he had no doubt it would be answered despite the late hour. They both had contacts with such numbers that shouldn’t be ignored.

The call was picked up halfway through the second ring. “Roth.”

“It’s Maximus,” he said without preamble. “I’m ten minutes from your residence. I have a proposition for you.”

There was an imperceptible pause and then, “I’ll be waiting.”

He waited for more before he realized that was all he was going to get. He stared at the screen for a moment, not quite believing the crazy bastard had hung up on him. He shook his head as he pocketed his phone. If he didn’t loathe his soon-to-be ex son-in-law, he might actually admire his blatant disregard for authority.

He wasn’t a superstitious man, but even he had begun to suspect James Roth might have cut a deal with the devil. It shouldn’t be possible for him to beat such odds time and time again.
