“Are you an artist?”

“You like your coffee black, right?”
She eyed her assortment of girly cups before she shrugged and grabbed a yellow mug that said, Hello, Sunshine and prepped the kettle for a cup of peppermint tea for herself.
“Yes. Black.”
She set a steaming cup in front of him and stood, blowing on her tea when he asked, “Are you an artist?”
She stiffened. “Pardon?”
He gestured to the now empty table. “There were illustrations…”
Damn him for being so observant. “Those were just sketches… for a friend.”
“A friend asked you to draw for them?”
She felt a blush creeping up her neck to her cheeks and hoped he would think it was due to the tea. “It’s a fun thing to do on the side. It doesn’t interfere with my school work.”
He gave her a level look before he said, “Jasmine, you know I’m not your dad, right?”
She let out a strained laugh as she took the seat opposite him. “Right. But you have more in common with him than I do. He lives and breathes work.”
“And what do you live and breathe?”
She suddenly realized how small the table was. She could easily reach across and touch him. Not that she would, but they had sat across from one another many times, but without dozens of other people present, in the quiet intimacy of her apartment, everything was different. As she met his gaze, her insides jittered.
