“I didn’t mean to offend you.”
“You didn’t.”
She was forced to stop at a crosswalk. She looked both ways down the empty streets and took a step forward to cross when he grabbed her arm.
“Safety,” he warned.
“Okay, Dad,” she drawled and arched her brows when the signal flashed for them to cross.
He held on to her all the way across the road and didn’t release her when they reached the other side. When she tugged on her arm, he hesitated before his hand fell away. She quickened her pace and was miffed that he had no trouble keeping up.
By the time they reached her apartment, her legs were burning.
“You don’t have to walk me to my door,” she said.
“But I will.”
She knew there was no sense arguing when he used that tone. Neither of them said a word as they rode up in the elevator. Her heart sank as they walked down the hallway. The urge to smooth over the awkwardness between them was strong, but another part of her knew this couldn’t go on. She was getting too attached to him. She was constantly checking her phone for word from him instead of her family, fiancé, or classmates. She hadn’t told anyone about their meetups. Not her classmates and not Lyle, who checked in once a week. No one would understand what they had in common or why he would go out of his way to spend time with her. But they didn’t know him like she did. She sensed that he needed a friend just as much, if not more, than she did. But no one would believe that. Neither would she if the shoe was on the other foot. And if anyone found out, there would be hell to pay. It was better that she ends this now, before…
