“You have a profound effect on him.”

She ground her teeth to hold her tongue. She didn’t want a lecture on how great and honorable Roth was. No one knew the terms of their agreement or the intimate details of their relationship. No one would believe how devious he was, how cunning, or what he would sacrifice for revenge. No one who saw them at Trentham Ball would imagine he was so cold-blooded and calculating. Even she who had seen his alter ego on more occasions than she cared to remember, was constantly shocked when Mr. Hyde showed up. How could anyone possibly understand who Roth was when even she had yet to scrape the surface of the man?

“He was so predictable. Did the same things on the dot like clockwork. Four years he never deviated from his schedule. He never did one thing out of the ordinary until you.”

“Until he moved to the States,” she corrected.

“Now his schedule is erratic, unpredictable. His security has to work in shifts because he doesn’t let up. There’s no pattern to what he’s doing. It’s chaos, so unlike him.”

“That has nothing to do with me,” she interjected. “Work—”

“Even coming here, a location we didn’t have time to investigate and learn layouts and pitfalls… It’s not ideal for providing safety and security.”

“I didn’t expect him to come with me.”

“He hasn’t spent more than three days away from you since he married you. I don’t think that will change over time.”

It would. He was still keeping up appearances, but soon…

“I’ve never seen him like this.”

She sighed and wished everyone would just leave her in peace. “Angry?”

“Scared.”
