Off to a new start… I guess?

Early Friday morning, September 27, 2024, Rhett and I had gotten up to take a look at the storm, Helena, brewing outside in upstate SC. We laid down in the bed and decided we probably weren’t going back to sleep and lifted the blind to watch the weather. After a few minutes of watching, the tops of the trees started swaying like grass on the beach and we decided we did not feel safe. About that time, a tree fell between us and the other camp host in the park. We both jumped up, started grabbing our clothes on, put the camera in the bag, grabbed the dogs and went to find the other camp host. The wind is whipping, rain is coming down sideways, and we are running around dodging fallen trees hoping to make it to the concrete bathhouse before another tree falls. About ten minutes after we made it in there is when it happened…. I had been periodically going out and checking the bus to make sure it was okay… this one time I came out and it was not. A huge pine tree had fallen on the front of our motorhome. We waited in there for around an hour before the wind calmed down enough for us to walk around and assess the damage fully. Our first home together, demolished by a tree.

The eye of the hurricane passed right over us, then the wind picked back up and we had to hunker down again. This time, we didn’t have any more trees fall on our motorhome. Overall Jocassee State park lost probably well over 200 trees and power lines down everywhere.

Right now, Rhett and I are focused on salvaging everything we can out of the bus. We are so blessed to be alive and have all of our camera gear and computer equipment still intact. When we get internet and computer access again, we will be back to posting regularly. For now, we are rebuilding and hoping to be better than before.
