While the story of John List is true, he wasn’t a part of the Watcher story in real life. But it’s something Ryan Murphy likes to do in series, where he intertwines different true tales into one story together to make it more surreal. He did it with urban legends in AMH and also in the series Hollywood. While the real John List did cut his face out of family photos, investigators did know what he looked like any way. He went on the run in 1971 and was caught in 1989 when his neighbor recognized him from an episode of America’s Most Wanted.
