Can I get your opinion?

When I release Patreon perks and freebees, I typically get very very little interaction from you devoted supporters. Less then Facebook, less then YouTube. Its such a small number of interactions that wonder if I'm doing something wrong, like maybe I'm releasing it in a way that nobody sees stuff. There are hundreds of people following this Patreon page, but I can even give away a full album, and get only two interactions.

So can you help me out, but answering these questions?

1: how do you find out when I release free perks here? Do you receive an email? Do you have to come to this page to notice?

2: What kind of perks would you be excited to see?

3: For you people that are following with no finical pledge, what would motivate you do subscribe for $ 1 or $2 bucks a month?

4. If you, right now, scroll down the list or "posts" on the Abney Park Patreon Page, do you see posts you've never seen before?

Comments

1. I usually have to look at the page, when i get an email its so buried in the mound of junk mail I usually don't see it. 2. I'm subscribed to financially support the band, the exclusive songs and videos are good. Patreon is an OK but not amazing interface. 3. I'm paying more than that already 4. Yes, I only remember to look at patreon about once a month (usually when i eventually see a FB post that prods me to look).

Leigh Ryder

1. If an email is sent, I check it out eventually. Some of the recent live things have happened during work hours. 2. I only do $10 a month. Whatever you are happy giving, I am happy to see. 3.NA 4. I see the list as it is updated. It's hard to find things sometimes, like the perks you get when signing up. I know it might be A LOT more work with all the moderation and stuff, but linking to a Discord account with chat rooms set up might get you more instant feedback than comments on here. If you have access to Discord, check out how Steam Powered Giraffe does theirs. Their patreon pages are low comment, but the activity on their Discord is really high.

Terence

1: I get an email from Kickstarter. 2: Not sure, I love the music and concerts. I typically listen through Spotify / Youtube music. I know that hardly pays you anything, so I always buy the albums as well. If you had a spotify or youtube channel where you posted the music you are listening to I would interested in that. 3: Already contribute 4: Nope, I already see all of these.

Curtis Potterveld

1 - I get an email. I tend to come here to see what it is, and listen before downloading. 2 - Keep on, keepin' on. 3 - N/A 4 - Sometimes, but not usually. I normally get notifications of new content here.

Rebecca Putman

1- e-mail, but I usually ignore it because it's a. redundant, b. selling stuff I already have, c. previewing things I'm going to get in a bit anyway and I don't have time for that. (I get like 4 e-mails per abney park post: 1 from the newsletter, 1 from facebook, 1 from patreon, and 1 from kickstarter) 2 - I like behind the scenes stories, old "lost" songs from under your couch or in your keyboard memory chips, and the opportunity to influence/inspire you, like when you asked what our childhood plushies were named. 3 - have been a subscriber for years. 4 - Posts I've not seen but known they were there. bonus 5 - Just because I don't interact much on Patreon, doesn't mean I'm going to cancel it - I love being able to support my favorite band even if it's only a few bucks. I don't download the free songs because I have them all already. (I am waiting for a reply about a concert mp3 download link I missed out on)

Jessica Bradshaw

1 - I get any updates from email. I don't use the app or visit the Patreon web page with any frequency to proactive check for updates for any of those I support. 2 - I have always just been happy supporting your endeavors without needing anything in return. Knowing that my $10 a month may help support future music or other cool things has always been enough for me. That stated I have two thoughts: -Providing copies or access to previous concerts could be a cool occasional perk (even if it were for a finite amount of time). This could be through a download or private youtube link. While I have supported many of the streaming concerts, I haven't been able to hit up them all for a variety of reasons and some I really wanted a way to check out after the fact. -Not specifically a perk, but potentially some increased communication when folks reach out on this platform with questions, etc. would be nice (especially for folks that are active supporters). I am not asking you to be utterly beholden to supporters, but I have seen a lot of questions (including some of my own) go without responses over the years. A good example of this is the previously mentioned missed streaming concerts. After a missed show, I inquired here in a response to a clip of the show as to whether there would be any way to get access to a copy of the show (with me mentioned that I would being happy to pay for the privilege). I never heard anything back. Granted, it might not have been worth the time / trouble to find a solution to my specific inquiry for only a few extra $$$ , but it would have been nice to hear a polite no. 3 - Not applicable. 4 - Nope.

Nicholas Abentroth

1. Email 2. I'm subscribed to financially support the band, and would be even if perks weren't offered. 3. I'm paying more than that already 4. No

SC Haywood

1: Email 2: I'm still trying to figure it out. I've liked all the ones you have released so far 3: I am a subscriber 4: No

Taylor Kent

1 : Email 2: MP3/4 files 3: I subcribe higher than that 4: yes

Jacob Skalberg

I find out about a perk release on Patreon when I see the post made. I check Patreon once a day at night, so whatever was posted since I last checked is when I see it. I like MP3 files, whether it is songs or stories. I am less likely to watch a video. I am on a low paid tier here already I will have to check for any missed posts, but I am usually good at keep up with all posts unless I take a trip.

Wild Card

1: how do you find out when I release free perks here? Do you receive an email? Do you have to come to this page to notice? I get the emails from patreon with the message about the post. I read there which doesn't have a reply feature. If it is something like a download I don't already have I might come and download it. If it is a concert announcements I tell my SO and she handles if we are going to attend. 2: What kind of perks would you be excited to see? I am more just doing it to support the band because I want to see and hear your creativity, I don't want influence over it. 4. If you, right now, scroll down the list or "posts" on the Abney Park Patreon Page, do you see posts you've never seen before? Nope I still have all the emails of those.

Chad

1: I receive emails and alerts on my phone because I have the Patreon app installed. 2: Always love music-related stuff, including about the writing/recording process or anything related to the creative process.

Alli Martin

Slightly related, I found the gaming section and it says gold and higher have access. I'm at Aerosteel and cannot see them.

Tora

1. I receive e-mail notifications from Patreon when perks are released or announcements made. To my knowledge I've never missed knowing of anything; always get that e-mail notification. 2. I'm not picky about perks. Previews of new music is the most exciting thing, but I'd still support you guys even without the perks just 'cause I love your music so much. 4. Scrolling...not seeing anything that I didn't already see. So seems I'm getting the e-mails without issue.

Leiko Burningbear

1. Pop ups from app 2. I have all your albums, but love the audio books when I can find them. Maybe discounts for the streaming? 3. Already paid subscriber. 4. Sometimes

Tora

I receive Patreon notifications in my email. I am always excited when there is new music. The only reason that I do not pledge to a higher tier is that I'm on a fixed-income. I haven't missed anything since I found your Patreon page.

Bryce Carlson

1 I usually get notifications from the patron app. 2 I am really into the art and lore. 3 the only reason I am not financially contributing is because of my own struggles, as soon as I get things settled I will likely pledge $5. 4 there are posts I have not seen before when I scroll. I am not sure why.

Duncan Anderson

1. I get the emails when there are updates. 2. I appreciate the perks just not gonna downl9ad to my phone which is how I access paetreon. 3. NA 4. I have seen all the posts. While I like all the perks, I often buy the full book once released or the whole album. I attend most virtual concerts since moving from Greater Seattle area years ago. I just want you to keep making music as long as you can and support a band I love. All the way to before the microsoft update midconcert.

Robert McKittrick

1) I get the emails 2) Not really interested in the perks (I know, weird). I sponsor people on Patreon because I enjoy their work beyond the casual level. I love your music so I'd rather have more of that than some kind of perk. I consider this an actual patronage, not a purchase. Does that make sense? Probably doesn't make sense. Whatever, it makes sense in my head and I sleep well at night. :-) 3) N/A 4) I don't log into Patreon that often. I don't need another social network. Yes, there are posts here I haven't seen, I don't know if it's because I saw it in an email and forgot about it or I don't get an email every time. Overall, I think you are doing a good job getting word out about new content and events. We've only missed one steaming concert and that was because of outside factors, not because we didn't know about it. We buy every CD you come out with and then consume on streaming just because it's more convenient (plus, the CDs are insurance in the case you disappear off those streaming services).

Kevin McEnhill

1: how do you find out when I release free perks here? Do you receive an email? Do you have to come to this page to notice? >Patreon sends me an email 2: What kind of perks would you be excited to see? >Keep up what you've been doing for the past 7? years I've been a patreon member 3: For you people that are following with no finical pledge, what would motivate you do subscribe for $ 1 or $2 bucks a month? >N/A I've been 5$ a month for a bit 4. If you, right now, scroll down the list or "posts" on the Abney Park Patreon Page, do you see posts you've never seen before? >Nope -- I've seen them In response to the General query of "Its such a small number of interactions that wonder if I'm doing something wrong" >I love you and the band's work, I just don't have much to say, other than -- Unless something profoundly changes in my finances I'll keep giving 5$ a month, and probably attend 1 concert a year (most likely virtual) -- I'm a fairly devoted, but quite asocial fan. Probably won't get another survey response from me for a few years either. sorry!

rusty eulberg

1) I definitely get the emails. I don't visit the Patreon page all that much, if anything because I support you guys because I believe in your work. I don't *mind* perks, but honestly just helping the band is my reward. Extra stuff is nice, but I just want AP music to continue on. 2) It's all gravy to me. Any reward is just another fried egg on my already delicious Loco Moco 3) N/A, since I'm a monthly supporter. For a lot of people, I don't know that they really appreciate that if they love an artists music, you have to support them with more than listening and fandom. Love a band? Pay them so they can keep making the music you love. Simple concept, as you know, but it seems to pass some folks by. 4) Your posts end up in my email, so I just read them there.

J Michael Pinc

Trying this again. 1) Get all the emails fairly promptly. 2) Every perk you send me is a little gift. I feel special. 3) Already at highest tier. Happy to be able to do it. 4) Have seen all these. Only time I check my Kickstarter stuff is right before a concert. I should make a point of visiting here more often. Just spotted Shift+Return for new line. So that's how you do it.

Hollis Curtis Perdan

1. Get the emails, all of them, both Kickstarter and Abney Park direct.

Hollis Curtis Perdan

Love all the perks simply because it is so kind of you to give them to me.

Hollis Curtis Perdan

1. I get an email, typically see everything but I wouldn't be surprised if some things didn't get emailed. 2. I do like getting songs and albums. Any perks come out are always great to see. I'm just personally not very vocal, sorry. 3. N/A 4. I don't think there is anything below I missed before.

Xikmoto

1) I get the emails and patreon notifications 2) I like the special videos/songs from VIP concerts and the album commentaries/introspections as I have all the albums, some multiple times. 3) already at a higher tier.

Philip Stevens

That’s where I fell too. Like…the free album was given to me, but I already have it. Passing it as a gift to someone else? I want more folx to hear y’all’s stuff, but I’m not sure the best way to do it ethically.

Jo Louie

1. I get emails for notifications 2. I like to hear what your new projects are & get some unreleased songs. But as someone else has said, I support you to help you out, as I enjoy your music. 3. I pledge. 4. I scroll when there is a new post, but don’t revisit them afterwards.

Debby P

I get an email and a notification from Patreon on my phone and I jump to see. I'm excited to see the audio releases and the concerts

Lussumbra

Yeah, I can see those limitations being a problem, and I’m not entirely sure how that other artist makes it work from her end (it’s Megan Slankard who does this). She’s talked about releasing albums of the songs. I haven’t seen an actual album come out, but in the discussions, she even had Patrons weigh in on which songs we’d like to see included (with final decision being hers, of course). Maybe that might be a way to get feedback to catch songs that you or the band think might appeal less that then surprise you? Don’t know. I like the idea of sharing the song concepts. It would also be interesting to hear the evolution of a song, particularly for ones where the concept is very different than the final song, maybe with notes exploring why you and the band made the changes you chose.

Andy Tinkham

1. I get an email and a notification (if I bother to open the page which I'm now more prone to do than previously). It's just that some of the Patreons I follow and that I'm more involved in are VERY active. 2. u r ql and deserve to kind of make a living with all the work you do (which we probably get to enjoy at some point). 3. I'd join a financially involved tier if … er. You got me there. Why the fornication not? 4. I'll probably start seeing things … purely because of #3, I swear!

Lasse P.

I get emails but also habitually check patreon a couple times a week. I love behind the scenes snippets and works in progress types of stuff

eric hughes

If you enjoyed Fairyworlds, you dont want to miss Realms Unknown. :Its a lot of the same people, and we have been there every year. Its just happened a few weeks ago, but It will be back next year I'm sure.

Abney Park

I get an email notification. I often don't interact because I feel like it is not really as acceptable as posting a comment on FB. ? Why, I don't' know. I used to pay every month a few years ago, but I am not in that pay bracket anymore, so pay cut for me = can't do monthly support like I did before. :( I have seen you twice in Concert. I bought all the CD's I could. I bought some t-shirts when you released new albums. I don't do streaming or downloads.

Kathleen Hill

DO I mind you giving the songs away to friends? To be completely honest, I'm not sure. Back in the day, that was called "music piracy", and it killed the CD sales we once lived off of. But now, in 2024, Spotify and similar do that on crack. I really dont know if the potential benefit outweighs the draw back at this point. So I guess I don't know?

Abney Park

Patreon Only Song is a strange concert for me. I see why thats appealing to fans, but I also see a couple downsides: 1. It's limiting who hears these songs. What if one of them would have been a huge hit, but I choose to make it exclusive? For example, or cover of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was shockingly more popular then I would have guessed, and brought a lot of new fans to the fold. Had it been exclusive, we'd have missed out on making those new fans. 2. recording new songs are a lot of work, not just my own but musicians too. Bring in the pros into the studio, and getting them to record their best efforts. I also normally spend about a year on the mix of a song, going back again and again with fresh ears, to make it perfect. "Free exclusive song" feels like I'd start to sacrifice all that quality. Perhaps I could do something with my "song concepts". Typically I create aan unfinished version of a new song, by myself. Its still sounds great, but I haven't involved the whole band at that point. That could be a fun bonus perk.

Abney Park

I get an email from Patreon... I don't do it to "get" anything, just to help support you! I enjoy the songs and especially the writings (like the new books!)

Allison Priputin

1. There is an email. The problem is there are a lot of emails in my life (election season doesn’t help,) and so I don’t read them all and I have filters for the ones I need to deal with and ones I don’t. Patreon emails are in the “safe to ignore bucket” (I get several a day on most days.) 2. I’m not here for the perks, but if it gets other people interested that is cool. 3. Already am, I specifically signed up here to support you. 4. Yes, because I’ve been ignoring the emails. 0. I think the real issue is that when it comes as an email it ends up in the “todo pile”, and I have to just get through it, which means ignoring the stuff I can. When I’m bored and scrolling Facebook/youtube/etc, I’m looking to interact, so I do… Maybe I should spend more time scrolling on Patreon, (and therefore give less money to Meta and Google,) but that is my habit... It isn’t anything you are doing wrong exactly, it just how it works. And apparently this website on mobile doesn’t allow you to format text. 🙄

Matthew Denton

I did release a ton of board game content back when this is was a new page. I wonder if rereleasing is a good idea?

Abney Park

1. I see it on the Lock Screen of my phone and I get an email. 2. I love seeing all the random stuff. Like I’d love seeing clips of practice bits, behind the scenes stuff, teasers, etc. if you guys made things like ringtones or phone backgrounds that would be rad. I’ll be honest and say I’m pledged because I’m just a huge fan and not to get extra perks that you sell otherwise. 4. I usually catch all the posts. Honestly Patreon is pretty garbage for community stuff, which is why I see a lot of Patreon creators setting up Discord servers for interaction with Patreon pledgers instead.

Scott Boding

okay, great. so at least your seeing things! Thanks for taking the time.

Abney Park

1. I learn about your releases here at Patreon because Patreon sends me email announcements. 2. I like the free songs, especially when you share songs that don't appear on albums or alternate versions. I also like your explanations of song inspiration. 3. I am a paid supporter. 4. On a quick scroll through the page, I have "liked" all the posts on the page.

David Lee Summers

1. Emails have been hit or miss, but Patreon sends me notifications 2. I do like getting an album and loved your podcast explaining your thoughts on each song. I also enjoyed your story and song freebies. Have you considered doing stuff with your boardgame?boardgames? 3. N/A 4. I've seen most posts

Diane McRae-Hardin

1. Email or Facebook announcement usually. 2. Maybe some kind of in person, or collaborative opportunity? Like many others, I already have most of your songs. 3. I think I'm paying a minimum that's too small for benefits. I just want you all to keep existing. 4. No, but I scrolled recently? (And maybe can't see some of them?)

Kathi Day

4. I've seen all the posts. I'm having the same issue on my own Patreon, despite how other artists do things, I kind of wonder if just knowing they're supporting us is enough for a lot of patrons? That's how I feel about who I support. Just keep doing your thing, I love you.

Melody Taylor

3. N/A I am a paid subscriber. What convinced me was just seeing that you had a Patreon and having the cash flow to drop a couple bucks in.

Melody Taylor

2. I'm honestly less interested in perks and more pleased to offer some support and see Abney Park continue to release new albums and perform. As an artist myself, I know that takes $$ and I'm happy and able to toss a couple bucks into the pot.

Melody Taylor

1, email or Facebook, 2, im alway intrested in the occasional piece of music you want to share with us fans 3, im currently on the Brass Pledge as i lack funds to support you guys more at the min but you do such fantastic work over the years i wanted to give some thing back for all the great things you do ive been a fan scince 2004 and based in the UK, seen you guys live when you came to London, got most of your CD's read your books, played your RPG and have your Record as well as your board game and seen your live stream many times now and can not wait until the end of the month 4, yes some times as i do not always keep up to date on Patreon but its always great tto see new content

Simon Anderson

1. Like others, email arrives. I also get a notification from the Patreon app. 2. I've already purchased all the albums I've been able to get (there might be some really early ones, maybe?), so a free album isn't something I'll usually download. What I'd love to see would be non-album stuff. Live shows, alternate versions of songs, stuff that supplements the albums (which I'm already going to purchase anyhow). Another musician I back on Patreon writes and produces a Patreon-only song each month. She's up over 100 songs at this point (maybe over 150? I download them in batches). Eventually, she draws from some of them as album material, though most remain unreleased so far. I don't know how prolific you are at writing to know if this is even feasible, and she's a solo artist doing all her own instruments, so it's probably much more complicated getting a whole band together to do that, but it could be an interesting approach. 3. N/A - I already pledge monthly 4. Nope. Saw them all.

Andy Tinkham

1. I get an email and I have the Patreon app and have notifications for it turned on.

Melody Taylor

1. Emails have been hit or miss across the board for patreon and I. 2. I already have all your albums, so that’s less of a draw for me…and it felt kinda squiggy to give them to someone else, but now that I think about it, it would be spreading the word. Do y’all mind that? 3. N/A 4. WHOA…I missed a lot!

Jo Louie

P.S. Haven't yet signed up for your next concert, but we will be there.

Michael Sardior

I see a Patreon notification on my Lock Screen.

Robert Slavey

2. I'm always excited to see new music and readings you have done. This is why I follow you, not to mention you were several times the main attraction for us at FaerieWorlds. So sorry that is gone now. If you happen to hear of a faerie convention near us please let us know. 3. I'm pledged with a monthly contribution. 4. No, I think I've seen them all. Thank you!!! Love you all!!!

Michael Sardior

1. I usually see it in my email, I do check things out. Sorry I haven't been as responsive as I could be. But I do follow you avidly.

Michael Sardior
