Episode 375: Phantasy Star

Just the first Phantasy Star this episode, mind you. We were going to talk about Phantasy Star II as well, but this conversation proved more than sufficient to support a full episode. So I suppose we'll just have to tackle that some other time.

This week's conversation involves me (Jeremy), an effective newcomer to the series, as well as long-time Phantasy phans Nadia Oxphord and Alex Phraio—OK, sorry, that's getting annoying. Nadia Oxford and Alex Fraioli. Yes. This all falls into my ongoing journey to soak my soul in Sega subjects, and of all the company's 8-bit home console originals, few can support quite as much conversation as Phantasy Star. So, here we are. Phantasy Star!

Art by Leeann Hamilton, and edits by Greg Leahy. Words by me, Nadia, and Alex, except as indicated by letter-writers.

You can still get the Sega Ages 2500 Phantasy Star Collection for PS3 via the Japanese PSN store, worth it just for the bonus art alone.

Nadia and Alex are great, but how can you make a retronauts about phantasy star without Shane B talking over everyone?!?!

shea dewar

ahhh, as seen in Resident Evil 4!

Hello there. "Mesetas" sounds a lot like "pesetas", which was the currency in Spain at the time - before most of Europe adopted the Euro.

Great episode! It motivated me to get the Switch version and I just finished it. It’s pretty good for its vintage. Not to mention, it’s been fun to see where everything came from and how it informed the design of Phantasy Star IV, which holds a special heart in my gaming memories.

Great episode, that "Meatball Parma" pun was a winner definitely. I'm used to my last name being said weirdly. The e is silent (I have distant relations that do pronounce the e so hearing "la prayd" is a thing I've gotten used to but it's basically said like "la prawd"). I'm still playing through Phantasy Star IV on the Sega Genesis Classics compilation for the Switch. Other RPGs I'm trying from that compilation are Shining Force (love it) and Landstalker (just started it. I haven't played many isometric games but this one intrigues me). I definitely learned some new things about the tetralogy of games from listening to this podcast and I'm half excited and half dreading to hear more about Phantasy Star II (which I will try to play for the first time later this year).

I second that. Please do the entire series, and bring back Alex and Nadia for each.

One of my best friends is named Lutz (pronounced "loots"). He said that his dad named him that because he thought it was short for Ludwig.

Christopher McDougall

Actually, I've heard Lutz is a very good name to have.

TeamVenom

THANK YOU for finally tackling this series! And PLEASE do the other games, they're all so worth a deep dive.

Ooh, the jealousy I felt as a Nintendo fan when this came out! Such an epic for the time.

Ben Hamilton

Can't wait to listen to this one!
