Episode 374: Return of the Jedi
Added 2021-04-26 13:00:01 +0000 UTC
It's been a bit slow to happen, but the fine folks of Retronauts East have finally completed our journey through the original Star Wars movie trilogy and the game adaptation of those films. And what timing! I just bought a high-end S-VHS player for Important Video-Related Purposes, and now I can go back and enjoy the "definitive" cuts of the movies on the old VHS cassettes that have been gathering dust in storage.
Benj Edwards, Chris Sims, and Ben Elgin join me once again to recount the magic and mayhem of George Lucas' blockbuster film franchise. And also the increasingly disappointing games based on those films. Don't worry, we'll do some episodes on non-film-associated Star Wars flicks, too. Should be a nice palate-cleanser before we dive into the prequel trilogy and its games.
Haha, just kidding. But, maybe...? 😳

Retronauts East is where it's at. I'm not even a Star Wars fan, but I'm a Retro East fan so you'll could talk about retro dental floss and I'd tune in. Benj and Chris, big shouts out!!

I just really want it to be known that Benj calling the ventilation shaft in the Emperor’s throne room a “trash can” is the funniest thing I’ve heard all week.

I definitely being a little one at the Fall Festival we had in my town, and they had an arcade tent set up. I of course HAD to play Return of the Jedi and died immediately. I have since tried to play it on emulators and also just die immediately.
Also, I could have sworn there's at least 1 level on Endor you can use Leia in SRotJ, but its been awhile

Anyway the correct answer for how to fix Jedi and it's remastered edition is to replace all the new music with https://youtu.be/X61VReFs9y4

I like Jedi Rocks more than Lapti Nek because Lapti Nek sounds like a James Brown kind of funky soul song that by the late 70s was becoming mainstream but Jedo Rocks is a truly alien song that no Earth human then or now would listen to for pleasure

Please, please, please do a Phantom Menace episode. It’s a critical artifact in the transition to digital video and an emblem of American pop culture on the eve of 9/11.

David Lynch was attached to direct ROTJ at one point. Also the early drafts were way more ambitious, but too costly like you said. The "other" was originally supposed to another hero and would have been introduced in a sequel trilogy. But Lucas did not want to detract from Luke.

Great episode! Definitely agree with Chris that somehow this one got to be underrated through the years, especially considering how the two other Star Wars trilogies ended (Sith has its moments, and the less said about Episode IX the better). Games wise I played that arcade game with the isometric view before I saw the movie so that was an interesting yet challenging experience, and I love the Super Star Wars version of it, especially with cheats so you can just skip around because it’s way too hard! Good stuff as always from the East crew.

As flawed and stupid difficult they are, I love the Super Star Wars games.
Some things you missed on Super Return of the Jedi. You can play as three versions of Leia. As Boush in the first couple stages, as "Jabba's Prisoner" in the the sand barge stages, and in her rebel commando gear in a few of the Endor stages. The first two feature a weird and overpowered charge attack that pretty much breaks the game.
And one of the most fun things you can do in that game is use the cheat code that lets you play as any character on any stage, and then just absolutely destroy The Emperor with Wicket. His arrows do ridiculous amounts of damage.

As far as spoilers from merchandise, I firmly remember buying and reading the novelization of Episode I at Books a Million about a week before the movie came out, though it had probably premiered by then.

I’ve always been confused by the narrative that the SNES games were difficult, I beat all three when I was 11-12 years old. Not bragging but I never knew that was the overall takeaway from those.

Just finished the episode and I felt the need to mention Super ROTJ absolutely had some confusing, sprawling levels. I specifically remember getting confused on where to go in the Endor level where Luke is on his way to turn himself in to Vader.

It's okay, they won't have anything to say about them because literally no one played them.

If you actually did each individual prequel episode each episode would be 4 hours long since each movie had SO MANY tie-in games. Episode 1 had 10 games alone.

Being a mere 4 weeks old when the movie released meant that Star Wars mania almost completely passed me by other that the Ewoks cartoon and toys. I didn’t really sit down and watch the trilogy all the way through until my early teens on VHS.
